Learning Teaching Plan __Introduction to The Nervous System

1. Aim To introduce the basics of nervous system structures and the structure/function of a neuron. 2. Standards Table: Drawn from The Intermediate Core Document Content Standard 4 Key Idea Key Idea 1: Living things are both similar to and different from each other and from nonliving things Performance Indicator(s) 1.2: Explain the functioning of the major human organ systems and their interactions. Major Understanding(s) 1.2a: Each system is composed of organs and tissues which perform specific functions and interact with each other, e.g., digestion, gas exchange, excretion, circulation, loco-motion, control, coordination, reproduction, and protection from disease. 1.2h: The nervous and endocrine systems interact to control and coordinate the bodys responses to changes in the environment, and to regulate growth, development, and reproduction. Hormones are chemicals produced by the endocrine system; hormones regulate many body functions Process Skills Standards 1, 2, 6, 7 Standard 6, Key Idea 2: Models are simplified representations of objects, structures, or systems used in analysis, explanation, interpretation, or design. Standard 6, Key Idea 4: Equilibrium is a state of stability due either to a lack of change (static equilibrium) or a balance between opposing forces (dynamic equilibrium). 4.1 Describe how feedback mechanisms are used in both designed and natural systems to keep changes within desired limits. 5.classify objects according to an established scheme and a student-generated scheme 9. Identify structure and function relationships in organisms.

Intermediate Process Skills

3. Performance Objectives (1) Students should be able to relate structure to function in the neuron. (2) Students should be able to interpret 2d diagram to a 3d model of neuron. (3) Students should be able to describe the basic functions of the neuron. 4. Key Questions What are the components of the nervous system? What are the 2 branches of the nervous system? What are the differences between central and autonomic nervous system? What is the structure of a neuron? 5. Misconceptions about the topic Misconception Correct Understanding Nervous system is one continuous unit Made up of neurons that are not physically connected Signaling can go both ways in neurons Neuron signals always travel dendrite to axon

Autonomic, cannot physically change responses based off thinking about them (ie heart rate increase/decrease) 6. Prerequisite skills Basic understanding of human anatomy 7. Vocabulary (a) from the Core Document; homeostasis (b) additional terms: central nervous system, autonomic nervous system, parasympathetic, sympathetic, dendrite, axon 8. Materials: Entry card, notes handouts, modeling clay or playdough, pipecleaners, homework 9. Safety concerns and disposal-NA 10. Learning and Teaching Experiences Time 5E Teacher Does Student Does 5 minutes Engage Entry card with questions: What is Answers questions, the nervous system? What is it raises hands with made up of? Why is it important? answers 15 minutes Engage, Powerpoint with introduction to the Takes notes on follow Explore nervous system along worksheet, answers assessment questions along the way 13 minutes Elaborate Make models of neurons using clay Make neuron models and pipecleaners. Students will be assigned in groups of 2 randomly assigned 5 minutes Evaluate/Assess Go over the models together, make Write their keys on sure all students have correct parts the board (which and functions (going over this in color clay/pipecleaner class will ensure students reached all is what component) performance objectives) 2 minutes Homework Hand out homework, Brain boggle Get homework and ask questions if applicable 11.
