SEMINAR ON THE CHARACTERISTICS OF GERMAN, FRENCH, ITALIAN, ENGLISH, AMERICAN AND RUSSIAN PIANO MUSIC This seminar will examine the characteristics of each of the major national styles of piano music, with illustrations from selected works by the main composers. It will also look at the foreign elements in each composers music. The discussion will be supported by the use of selected recordings of non-piano music (such as orchestral works, opera arias, and songs) to illustrate relevant national characteristics. The outcome of discussion will become virtually a study of the history of piano music. DAY 1 GERMAN PIANO MUSIC (including Austrian) Representative works of the following composers will be discussed: Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Hindemith.

DAY 2

FRENCH PIANO MUSIC Representative works of Couperin, Faur, Franck, Debussy, Ravel, Satie, and Messiaen will be discussed. Strictly speaking, the works of Chopin and Liszt are not French, but they will also be discussed since they contain a lot of German, French and Italian elements. ITALIAN PIANO MUSIC D Scarlatti was arguably the only major Italian composer of piano music, and Italian influences are found in the works of many non-Italian composers. ENGLISH PIANO MUSIC English characteristics will be examined in selected works by Byrd, Purcell and Ireland. AMERICAN PIANO MUSIC The representative works of Scott Joplin, George Gershwin and Samuel Barber will be used to illustrate some of the American characteristics.

DAY 3

RUSSIAN PIANO MUSIC This part of the seminar will begin with a discussion of the historical background of Russian music, followed by a study of both Russian characteristics and foreign influences in the piano works of the Nationalists, such as Glinka, Balakirev and Mussorgsky, and in the works of the non-nationalists which include Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Scriabin and Prokofiev. It will conclude with a discussion of the important works of the two major composers working under the Communist regime, Kabalevsky and Shostakovich. A word on Bartoks piano music will be made, although he was not Russian, because he was one of the greatest composers of the 20th century and his music is a stylistic synthesis of German, French and Italian elements. 2
