OBJECTIVES OF THIS CLASS

By the end of this class, students should be able to: 1. activate and recycle their theoretical knowledge of the different ways of referring to the future in English. 2. identify and analyse contexts in which the different ways of expressing future time are more appropriate. 3. decide on the most appropriate linguistic choice to use in order to refer to the future in a given context. 4. produce their own meaningful sentences to express future time.

LEAD IN

Read the conversation below. Underline the verbs that express future time. Nancy is engaged to be married. She and her fianc, Tim, are trying to make their wedding plans, but Nancys mother doesnt agree with them. Nancys mother: Now, I have it all planned, honey. Were going to go shopping for your wedding dress this weekend. Oh, youll look so beautiful in a long, white dress! Nancy: Mom, Im not going to spend hundreds of dollars on a dress that Ill never wear again. Nancys mother: Dont worry about that. Your father and I will pay for it! Nancy: No, Mother. Im not going to wear an expensive dress. In fact, Ive already bought a plain one and Im picking it up tomorrow afternoon. Tim: And Im wearing a suit. Im not going to rent a tuxedo. Nancys mother: Ive phoned my hairdresser. She is coming on Friday at 5. Nancy: Mom, you know I just hate having my hair done. Nancys mother: OK. Well see Now, what about the reception? Were going to have a big party with music and dancing, arent we? Nancy: No, Mom. The plane to Hawaii leaves at 9. We wont have enough time. If we have a big party, the plane will have left by the time we reach the airport. Will you and daddy have a small reception at home? Nancys mother: Well, its a tradition that the brides parents give the reception Im sure itll be OK with your father. Ill ask him tonight. Nancy: Thanks, mom. Tim: Just think in a weeks time well be lying on the beach
