In this passage, a woman fotgets that she had agreed to cook dinnet lot her parents.
Carly had been so busy at work that she had completely forgotten that her parents were coming dinner that evening. She had planned to cook a variety of dishes, mainly with rice. Her parents usual insisled on freshly cooked food and Carly just didn't have time at the end ol her working day to buy i the ingredients and prepare them.
"What shall I do?" she asked a colleague.
"l have an idea. I know a couple who will cook and deliver meals to the workplace. l'll get their numb and you can grder some dishes from them.Your parents will never know;'he replied.
Carly proceeded to order a variety of dishes from Mr and Mrs Chan - the owners oi Chan's Quicktot Service. lt all seemed very easy and convenient, and Carly was able to focus again on her work.
As she took the bus home, carrying the evening meal, she wondered why she didn't buy ready-ma( meals more often. She didn't like eating in fast food restauranis. But this was different - the food sl had bought was fresh, made that afternoon.
She arrived home about half an hour before her parents arrived. In that time, she laid the dinner tab wjth three places, re-heated some of the food, and leftthe kitchen a little messy-to give the impressi( that she had been rather busy in there.
Carly welcomed her parents with a smile, until she noticed thal her parents had brought along tv friends.
"Carly, dear. I hope you don't mind;'said her mother, "but we've brought along our new friends, Ce and David Chan. They've just opened a new food delivery service in townl'

The organisers of the eveni had been advertising locally for a lew weeks using the slogan . the family'. They had been given some money by the government to improve the state ot the n health. Tonighfs family fitness event was the first in a number that would be happening across country. The Wong family had all decided to attend the event together. When David Wong had contacied organisers and said that he had rather a large family, the organisers had said thatthis would be peri all right and had assumed that he would be bringing lots of children.
When only one child arrived - and a baby at that - the organisers were a litfle taken aback. after David explained the situation, the organisers asked him jf they could make a briel annou during the event. He agreed, but decided to keep it allto himself. "Am I doing OK?" asked great-grandmother.
"Youte doing pretty well for an 8s-year-oldi replied Sheila, who had reached the not-so-young 50 herself.
"And look at baby Daniel, he's having so much fun too;'contjnued great-grandmother.
And then the announcement came: "Tonight, ladies and genflemen, we would like to Wong family. All iour generations of them: David and Sheila, with their grown-up son and daugl

ALOUD
ln this passage, a woman tells het husband about her day spent at the shops.
"l can't believe it, it's so embarrassing," said Jenny to her husband.
"Well, yes, but it's funny as well. You must find it a little amusing?" suggested Tom. Tom had lived with his wife's forgetfulness for many years, and he had got so used to reminding her of all sorts of things that he just accepted the task as part of being with Jenny.
Jenny knew that she was forgetful. Only last week, she had driven to see a friend and parked in a small car park, near the {epartment store where they had arranged to meet. After a pleasant wander round the shop, Jenny had said goodbye to her friend and had called into a pharmacy to buy some ointment ior her daughter, who had developed a minor rash on her back. Jenny was feeling happy that she had remembered to buy the ointment been sure she would forget-
What she had forgotten, however, was exactly where she had parked her car. She spent the next hour trying to find it. ln the end, she iound it when she bumped into the friend she had just been shopping with, who took her to the right car park.
What Tom had found amusing was that Jenny had gone shopping for the sole purpose of buying a purse, to replace the one she had lost the day belore. She had iound a purse she liked, and had asked the shop assistant to put it in a large bag for her - which she had then left in another shop.
"Never mind. l'm sure we can find the purse. l'm just happy that you've never managed to lose me;' added Tom.

Do the following and feel your tongue. Can you describe what it is doing in each case? sound in see)and then..ae" (the vowei sound in cat), :1y.,-1". !,.f-1)/9y, movrng your longue quickly between these two sounds. Say "oo'(the vowel sound in food)and then'avl' (the vowel sound in
sounds. Say "ae' and then "aw". moving your tongue quickly behveen these two sounds
Say 'ee" and then'oo", moving your tongue quickly btween these two
Now repeat the four exercises above and describs what your lips do while You are making these sounds.
:
This is not true of all nounlvetb pairs. Eg. "measure" can be both a noun and a verb and the stress is on the first syllable in both cases. The tendency for stress to go at the beginning of a noun and at the end of a verb shows up in another way in compounds. Compound nouns have the stress on the Jirst element.
