Griffiththeoryofbrittle fracture:

Observedfracturestrengthisalwayslowerthantheoreticalcohesivestrength. Griffithexplainedthatthediscrepancyisduetotheinherentdefectsinbrittle materialsleadingtostressconcentrationimplieslowerthefracturestrengthof thematerials. Crackpropagationcriterion: Considerathroughthicknesscrackoflength2a, subjectedtoauniformtensilestress,atinfinity. Crackpropagationoccurswhenthereleasedelastic strainenergyisatleastequaltotheenergyrequiredto generatenewcracksurface.

TheGriffithequationisstronglydependentonthecracksizea,and satisfiesonlyideallybrittlematerialslikeglass.
