COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to vector spaces, subspaces, bases, transformations, and mappings. Matrix operations and the fundamental concepts of matrix algebra and its application to linear transformations and vector spaces. REQUIRED TEXT: Linear Algebra, by Kolman & Hill 9th ed. OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to: A. Solve problems using matrix algebra. B. Evaluate and use determinants. C. Define and solve problems and prove results in vector space settings. D. Solve systems of linear equations and interpret the solutions. E. Use inverse matrices and the Gram-Schmidt process. F. Find the eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and eigenspace of a matrix. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: ATTENDANCE: You are expected to attend class. If you miss class, find out what you missed: ask your instructor, get notes from a classmate, and read the book. Your instructor may have unannounced quizzes. These may not be made up the lowest quiz/homework score will be dropped.

GRADING/EVALUATION: Your grade will be based on your percentage of the total possible points with the lowest quiz or homework (but not both) dropped. The grade scale is:

A = 90% - 100%, B+ = 85% - 89%, B = 80% - 84% C+ = 75% - 79%, C = 70% - 74%, D+ = 65% - 69% D = 60% - 64% F = below 60% OTHER POLICIES: Cheating will result in a course grade of F. Tests will be given only at the scheduled time on the scheduled day. If you miss a test for a good reason, tell your instructor. He will believe you. In return, you must believe your instructor when he tells you that he will determine your grade fairly, based on the other information available. NO MAKE-UP TESTS WILL BE GIVEN. The faculty member has the authority assign a failing grade in cases of academic misconduct as well as referring the case to Student Life.
