THE HIGHEST RESOLUTION MINEHUNTING SONAR

The increased threat from new low target strength mines in the littoral underwater battlespace is countered by the Thales Underwater Systems Sonar 2193, now in service on the Royal Navy HUNT Class MCMVs. This minehunting system represents a

major breakthrough in performance over previous sonars. System design philosophy represents a commitment to providing the highest possible coverage rates and robustness of detection and classification performance within a system whose technology, reliability, installation and through life support have been designed to meet the capability and availability requirements of todays Navies.

Performance and Innovation

Modern technology plus extensive experience of minehunting sonar design and operational requirements have been combined to provide a range of innovative benefits: I Wideband transducer arrays allow maximum performance from the use of the highest bandwidth-time product available I Advanced, fully developed CAD algorithms, crucial to system operational effectiveness, provide the basis for high probabilities of detection I Multi-ping Integration produces remarkable improvements to both search and classification display image quality I Non-linear Image Compression provides a clear tactical picture in a multiple contact, real world environment I Interferometric Classification, a patented Thales Underwater Systems technique, provides very high resolution imaging at much longer ranges than conventional classifiers I Long Range Classification provides pre-classification at detection ranges, thus significantly reducing the load on the Command Team I Forward Look Route Survey correlates survey data with data from subsequent search and classification operations I A fully integrated performance prediction and sonar settings recommendation facility (RTPM3) ensures that the sonar is continually optimised for the environment

Sonar 2193 is an imaginative implementation of proven techniques in available commercial hardware. It can be fitted rapidly with minimum disruption to the vessel. In the case of vessels previously fitted with Sonar 193M, this is achieved largely by replacing existing hardware enclosures.
