UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING CVE 230 MECHANICS OF MATERIALS LAB Spring 2013 LAB

#2b Testing of Hardened Concrete Due: March 25/27/29 The scope of this lab is to study the compressive and tensile properties of concrete by carrying out tests on hardened concrete specimens. Tests include compression test on cylinders, split cylinder test, flexure test to determine the modulus of rupture and a nondestructive test (rebound hammer test). Compression Test (4"X8" cylinder): Measure the dimensions of the 4X8 specimen. Average two readings for the diameter at 90 and three readings for the length. Calculate the volume of the cylinder. Weigh the specimen and calculate the weight in lb/ft3. This will be used in modulus of elasticity calculations. Carry out the compressive test as described in the lab. Record the failure load and observe the failure mode. Calculate the compressive strength using the cross sectional area measured.

For this component of the lab your report should include: Brief description of the test. Discuss the failure mode (include sketch as applicable) and provide the compressive strength, the weight in pcf, and the modulus of elasticity as determined using the ACI formula. Plot the results of week 1, 2 and 4 compression tests of this mix and discuss the development of strength over time.

Rebound Hammer Test: Note: Be careful handling the specimens because they will also be used for the modulus of rupture test. Lay the specimen (6"x6"x20") on their side flat on a solid and smooth floor area. Take at least five readings for each specimen as indicated in the lab. Calculate the average rebound measurement. Using the calibration chart estimate the

compressive strength of the specimen. For this component of the lab your report should include: A brief description of the test. The estimated compressive strength and its relation to the value determined in the cylinder compression test.

Split Cylinder Test: Measure the dimensions of each specimen. Average two readings for the diameter at 90 and three readings for the length. Carry out the split cylinder test as described in the lab. Record the failure load and calculate the split cylinder strength, fct.

For this component of the lab your report should include: Brief description of the test. Discuss the failure mode (include sketch as applicable) and provide the split cylinder tensile strength. For each specimen tested express the split cylinder strength in terms of the corresponding compressive strength in a formula similar to the one provided in class.

Modulus of Rupture Test: For each specimen measure the geometry as loaded and the width and depth of the section in the mid third (take average of several readings). Carry out the test as described in the lab. Observe failure and record the failure load.

For this component of the lab your report should include: Brief description of the test. For each specimen tested discuss the failure mode (include sketch as applicable) and provide the modulus of rupture. For each specimen tested express the modulus of rupture in terms of the corresponding compressive strength in a formula similar to the one provided in class. Compare the modulus of rupture and split cylinder strength values.
