Ill freely admit that Im nerd when it comes to technology and one could easily make that assumption when you walk into my Riviera office where we have several terminals set up with the latest Apple computers amongst other techy toys. Whereas there is a level of acceptance with my inner McFly, I am rather embarrassed about how excited I get when a new iPhone is released. If youve ever had a chance to watch an Apple keynote (and I dont suppose many of you do..), viewers are witness to an extremely methodical yet simplistic message by the worlds largest company. Although smart phones have the ability to be extremely intimidating, Apple delivers the message by exploiting the emotion of users and the ultimately the movement of a society. Playing on emotions can be easily construed as a taboo way to conduct advertising however if youve ever heard the reaction a Buyer or Seller makes when theyve got the news about their deal, youre soon to realize it all about emotions.

In the 1950s, Edward Zuckerman, with a partner, purchased a sloping 150 acre garbanzo bean field rising up from the cliffs of the ocean on the Palos Verdes Peninsula adjacent to San Pedro. In 1970, Ken Zuckermans father had tried to build on his farmland 1,200 apartment units, a 200-room resort hotel, and a nine-hole golf course. This massive planned development prompted the formation of the City of Rancho Palos Verdes. The new government placed a moratorium on development, then downzoned the Zuckermans property to require that all new homes be built on one-acre lots. Based on these restrictions, it didnt make sense to build, so the Zuckermans sat on their property until 1989, when Ed Zuckermans sons, Ken and Bob, with a partner, formed a joint venture for an additional 100 acres from developer Barry Hon to accumulate a total of approx. 260 acres, with close to two miles of ocean frontage. The Zuckerman family spent years working with the City of Rancho Palos Verdes and various environmental groups to create a plan which would provide native sagebrush habitat for a rare bird, the California gnat-catcher. The plan was initially approved in 1994, however construction was delayed by years of lawsuits by environmental groups. The Zuckerman brothers created a new limited partnership in 1997, buying out Barry Hon. Development of the Ocean Trails Golf Course finally began in 1998. Ultimately, out of the Zuckermans 260 acres, 75 were devoted to 75 home sites. The golf course is built on 100 acres (compared with 150 for a typical course), but 20 of those were required to be covered with regrown sagebrush. 105 acres were reserved for sagebrush, public parks, or pathways. Unfortunately, on June 2, 1999, just before its scheduled July 2nd opening, a large portion (approx. 17 acres) of the cliff-top 18th fairway slipped towards the ocean creating a huge chasm. The project, which had been originally budgeted for $126 million, required another $61 million to repair the land slide damage (paid for by insurance proceeds). For months, the course operated on a temporary basis as a 15 hole course. The property was then tied up in various lawsuits, including a claim by Zuckerman that a water line running under the property had burst, causing the land slide, however another potential cause was discovered, that an ancient landslide, previously undetected, may have been the cause of the land slide. Ultimately, the Zuckermans were forced to declare bankruptcy, and the property was taken over by Credit Suisse , the lender on the property, in February 2002. In August 2002, Donald Trump acquired the Ocean Trails project for a reported $27 million. Subsequently, Trump made substantial improvements. The course finally opened as an 18 hole course on January 20, 2006. Including the money Trump has invested in the course and the original investment by the Zuckerman family, the project has expended in excess of a reported $300 million, clearly making the course the most expensive golf course ever constructed.

PLUGGED STOOL
Since he became a designer, Jack Craig has been interested in making pieces that are transformative.Thats literally the case with the Plugged Stool, where he heats PVC water mains and then manipulates them down to their raw material, before converting it into seating. Ive always had an interest in odd, modern materials, Craig said. Traditional materials have been expanded upon. You have more opportunities to create something unique with unusual materials. A one-man operation in his studio in Detroit, Craig begins the process of creating each stool by gradually heating the PVC with an industrial space heater at about 230 degrees Fahrenheit. After the PVC becomes pliable, Craig only has a five minute window to take action and drive a piece of wood into the middle and strap it down to create the stool. Because of the material Craig is using, no glue is needed to make sure the wood stays attached to the base. Once it cools and is then leveled and fine-tuned, the Plugged Stool is ready to be sold.
It is all about the process and the discovery of what the materials can do, Craig said. It is different every time. While Craig is able to make the stool by feel now, one wrong move and a days work could be all for naught. That is why Craig heats the PVC at a low, gradual temperature no higher than 250 degrees. The PVC base only comes in white, but customers can choose from walnut, white oak and ash wood on the seat of the stool, which costs $650. Thanks to its durable and industrial design, the Plugged Stool has found interested customers across the globe. Getting the most interest in bigger cities throughout the United States like San Francisco, Chicago and Miami, Craig also has customers outside the country. They are as close as Canada and Mexico and as far as Russia. Every time I am working in the studio, I think about creating things that will provoke a reaction, Craig said. For the longest time while we were living in El Porto, we didnt know
anything existed east of Highland, Jones jokes. We got married and had a kid, but when he turned 1, we realized we needed a backyard.
Jones and his wife crossed Highland and began searching in the Tree Section, wondering if they could afford even just a small home. The couple stumbled upon a two-bedroom, one-bath bungalow built in the 1940s, shocked by its small size. I thought, no way am I going to live in this tiny house and pay this much, recalls Jones. But one look at the backyard and its gnarled pepper trees, and his architect mind envisioned a tree house for his son. Looking back, Jones realizes he was in the right place at the right time with regard to real estate prices. The couple purchased the home for a little over $400,000, not knowing how much the market would appreciate in a short time. We lived in the little house for four years, relates Jones. Being an architect, I tried to convince my wife that we had to do something with it, but shes the financially prudent one. Thinking the real estate market had peaked in 2000, the couple considered trading up for a bigger home. The logic would be to buy the next level up, and try to find something under a million, but it was someone elses remodel, relates Jones. Were talking old plans with rooms added on, totally hacked, and making no architectural sense. The other alternative was to buy a brand-new home, but the prices were beyond the couples budget. For a while they considered selling the home and renting another one, but Jones wanted to stay. He describes his almost comical attempts to convert his wife to his way of thinking. I kept doing designs and showing my wife renderings. I even built little models and did all these things to entice her, but she barely gave me the time of day, he laughs. It was always, Oh, thats nice. Everything changed the day Joness wife came home and told him she was pregnant with their daughter. I was surprised and excited about the new child, but the next words out of her mouth were, I guess we need to do the house now. I was almost as excited to hear that news as I was to hear about my child, Jones exclaims. Jones threw himself into the project right away, with the goal of having the house ready in time for his daughters birth. I built the house in eight months, he says. My son called it the fix-it house. Construction began in April 2002. Joness daughter was born in September of that year, and the family moved into their home in December. The original designs Jones drew while trying to convince his wife they needed to remodel had to be scaled back to accommodate their budget, and Jones himself ended up playing the role of general contractor to save money. I dont contract all the time, but I know the sequence of things, Jones explains. The couple rented a house on a nearby walk street while their home was being redone. As a commercial architect specializing in hotels, spas and restaurants (Manhattan Beach Post is one of the South Bay restaurants designed by Joness firm, SF Jones Architects in Marina Del Rey), Jones wanted his home to showcase his residential abilities.
Ive since decided to stick with commercial work, although Ive done a few
houses for friends and acquaintances, he says. I jokingly say that if you do residential architecture, youre an architect-slash-marriage counselor. You learn more about peoples marriages than you want to know. Designed in a contemporary Craftsman style, the home features trusses and details evocative of the architectural movement that became popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s. An axial layout defined by a large two-story wall allows for living spaces to feed off the axis. The homes clean, simple detailing provides a decidedly modern feel. One of my signature style elements is using a lot of saturated, intense colors, and I like to use material in its natural coloring, notes Jones. Indonesian daru-daru wood was used as flooring throughout the house. Known for its intense, amberyellow color, the wood was refinished once and not stained. In the kitchen, Jones used padauk wood from Africa. The woods natural, deep red color has intensified over time, Jones says. Its almost like the house is ripening. The home has a split-level floor plan with four bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths. Although Jones could have built to the maximum 3,300 square feet, the home is 2,850 square feet because he wanted to preserve the two mature trees in the backyard. We got the essentials we needed. Bedrooms for the kids, a spare room for guests, and a decent-sized master bedroom and bath. Jones adds that the living area is six to eight feet higher than the street elevation, which offers privacy despite the large picture windows at the front of the house. And though theres much to love about his home, Jones admits hes partial to the kitchen and its positioning relative to the family room and outside patio. From the kitchen you have direct visual contact with the family room, and also to the patio, notes Jones. Those three spaces are where we usually hang out, so theres always some connection. And as the chef of the house, Jones says he can cook, watch his favorite football game and keep an eye on his kids playing in the yard, all at same time. Regarding kitchen design, Jones explains that you have to think about where the activity happens and where the sous-chef needs to be. The [fewer] steps he takes, the more efficient he is, and he doesnt crash into the chef. Jones applied this philosophy in his own kitchen. I can stand in one spot and get stuff out of the fridge, put it on the grill, and I have a nice maple block in the middle with a drawer that pulls out for trash. I dont have to move. In my little triangle of space, I have everything I need. Jones eventually did build the tree house of his dreams for his children. Its an elaborate, three-level tree house that connects the two big trees in the backyard, the perfect reward for any child who can motivate his parents to give up an ocean view for a place to play.

Neighborhood Church

If you head into Palos Verdes, pass Malaga Cove and then drop down toward the right, youll come upon the Neighborhood Church, a beautiful building with an interesting past. J. J. Haggarty, an entrepreneur who owned businesses in both Los Angeles and New York, chose this beautiful and private spot to build his graceful mansion in 1927. The home was to serve as his summer residence. Haggerty was born in London in 1864 and arrived in Los Angeles in 1902, and he became a successful businessman. He hired architect Armand Monaco to design his summer home in the style of an elegant Mediterranean villa. The result was an expansive, one-story Italianate villa with a tile roof that was comprised of 32 rooms, including a master bedroom with a bathroom that featured a sunken Roman tub and a walk-in closet. Also included on the property were a conservatory, a formal garden, gardeners cottage, a large swimming pool, private pier and two garages housing six automobiles. Haggertys architect specifically intended the residence to complement the dramatic, nearby cliffs. There was lush landscaping and immaculate gardens, all designed by the Olmsted Brothers. There was also a greenhouse and a reflecting pool, all of which were protected by a 30-foot sea wall. An intricate, bay. A barn also adjoined the residence. tag for those pre-Depression days.

scalloped rock wall ran along the front of the estate, and an arched entranceway decorated the circular drive. Full-size olive trees and palm trees were planted on the property, and Roman statues surrounded the residence in keeping with the Mediterranean theme. When the Haggerty business faltered, his beautiful mansion passed through several owners and was finally bought by Harry Wheeler, a mid-west financier who purchased the estate with the sole purpose of housing his art collection. Upon Wheelers death, his family wanted neither the estate nor his collection, and the villa sat on the real estate market in 1949 for quite some time. The propertys asking price was just $250,000, and yet it was subsequently reduced numerous times. Executors of the Wheeler estate eventually accepted an offer from the United Church of Christ for $60,000 and the property became known as the Neighborhood Church in 1953. It may have changed a bit over the years, but the location still has gorgeous surroundings, unsurpassed views, and a welcoming spirit.

her love of surfing, what its like to compete in tournaments across the globe, and her future goals.
South Bay Digs: Tell me a little about your background and your connection to the South Bay. I grew up in Bakersfield until I was 11 and then moved to the Palos Verdes area. I always loved the ocean. Every time we would go to the beach when I was a kid, you couldnt get me out. I always had a boogie board and was swimming around. And when we moved here, I was so happy. I was so fascinated with surfing, but could never do it because we lived so far away. When we finally did move here, my sister and I found a surfboard in my neighbors trash can. We found this board from the 1970s with a single fin and had no surf wax for it. We would go out and take turns and even hit a few people because we didnt have a leash. We knew nothing about what we were doing, I just knew that I loved it! I kept going out all of the time and after a while began to pick things up. I was so dedicated and wanted to go every day and just be in the ocean. How long did it take you before you felt like you knew what you were doing out in the water? The first time I went out there, I didnt even catch a wave. I was just trying to stay on the board. After a few times though, about the fifth time, I rode a white wash wave. I learned on a shortboard, so that made it really hard. After getting that wave, I was hooked. I couldnt stop. The summer before high school, I would go every day. I walked a bunch of dogs that summer to save up for a new board. By the end of summer, I was picking up waves and knew what I was doing out there. I lived up by Peninsula High School at the time and would bike all the way to Manhattan Beach. What was going through your mind the first time you caught a big wave? It was such a special day. Ill never forget that session. I was out there and the water was really shallow and clear, so I could see all of the shells on the bottom. I still remember having the song Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson stuck in my head. Only one other kid was out there surfing, so it wasnt too crowded. I caught it and it was also the first wave that I angled on, so I was able to ride it sideways and stay up for a while. It was such a great feeling to float on top of the wave. What do you love about surfing? You almost cant explain it. Just being out there, the colors are so beautiful, you often see marine life and it is so quiet. You are shut off from the rest of the world. All you hear are the waves crashing and the birds flying over. It is very peaceful. It is a great way to clear your head and it seems like everything disappears once you get in the water. Every time you go out, you can always challenge yourself. It is always unpredictable and keeps you on your toes. to Santa Barbara and Ventura.

From the second Natalie Anzivino rode her first wave, she was hooked. Happiest when shes surfing, the 22-year-old is down by the Manhattan Beach pier nearly every day practicing for upcoming competitions. South Bay Digs caught up with Anzivino to chat about
What do you like about surfing in the South Bay? Everyone is really friendly here when you are surfing. If you go down south or up north, people are really aggressive. I like this area being below the radar because of that. Everyone travels to Newport, Huntington and Malibu. Here it is cool. I usually surf Manhattan by the pier, which everyone makes fun of me for, but I also will occasionally travel. Sometimes Ill surf El Porto or go What have you accomplished in surfing since graduating from high school? After high school, I had the decision of traveling to compete. I had a few sponsors, including Channel Island Surfboards and Mike Benavidez from Ercoles. I went to France, Hawaii and Florida, and I did pretty well. They were competitions run by the Association for Surfing Professionals and World Qualifying Series. The first big tournament I went to was in Hossegor, France when I was just 18. The whole thing was a pretty scary experience. Id never been out of the country and got lost on the way there, but it was a growing experience. I saw all of these girls that I see in surfing magazines and was just trying to stay cool and not be star struck. My surfing isnt what was holding me back, I just didnt know how to compete at that level, but my surfing was there. Id make it through a few heats, but never win any. What are some of the things you are trying to focus on in these competitions? I love going out and being free to catch waves and work on my surfing, but when you go out in a heat, especially with high level contests, you have to be very aggressive. It is almost like you are mean to the other surfers. That is so hard for me. Im learning that it is a big part of competing and strategy. Its almost about not letting others catch certain waves. Tell me about the contests you are competing in now and how you are staying involved in surfing. Im trying to think more like an athlete. When I go out and surf every day, I am thinking about bettering my surfing. I am thinking about where I should be placing myself on the wave and doing more critical turns. I am also trying to train and eat like an athlete. I just did a 6-Star WQS event, which was a cool experience. I learned a lot and I know the scores I got, I know I can beat all of those girls, I just need to have a better strategy. Im also doing strength and balance work. Im just trying to surf seven days a week. Also as a surf instructor, I am in the water before and after lessons and work around that.
