ELOCUTION 2013 (UNITY IS THE MAIN THRUST FOR THE SUCCESS OF 1 MALAYSIA)

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim and Alhamdullillahirabbbilalmin . Assalamualaikum w.b.t and a very good morning to the respected chairperson, honourable judges, faithful timekeeper, beloved lecturers and my fellow friends. Greetings 1 Malaysia. My name is Farah Farhana binti Ayob from G 2.8. This is my pleasure for having a chance to present my speech at this stage. Before I begin, I am here seeking for your ears to listen attentively. Ladies & Gentleman, What is 1MALAYSIA CONCEPT? 1MALAYSIA is a program that introduced by our Malaysian prime minister DATO SRI MOHD NAJIB BIN TUN HAJI ABDUL RAZAK on 16 September 2010, calling for the cabinet, government agencies, and civil servants to more strongly emphasize ethnic harmony, national unity, and efficient governance. 1MALAYSIA concept is not a new concept or formula. The ultimate goal of 1Malaysia, which is national unity, has been the main vision of previous countrys leaders too. It has been interpreted in various shapes and forms over the span of five decades of Independence. If we truly study it, what has changed is the approach and implementation according to the ever-changing times and generations. Ladies& Gentleman, What does it mean by unity? Unity is the state of being in agreement and working together; the state of being joined together to form one unity. It emphasized unity as envisioned through the 1Malaysia concept varies greatly from the assimilation concept practiced in other

countries where the ethnic identities are wiped out and replaced with one homogeneous national identity. Ladies & gentleman, Through 1MALAYSIA concept, there are 8 values that emphasized by our Prime Minister, DATO SRI MOHD NAJIB BIN TUN HAJI ABDUL RAZAK. There are culture of excellence, perseverance, humility, acceptance, loyalty, meritocracy, education and the last one, integrity. These 8 values are believed can bring unity into a reality. Thus, here I would like to bring your attention to 3 values that I believe is the most important to promote unity. Firstly, the value of acceptance, integrity and lastly through education. Firstly, the value of acceptance amongst multi racial people in Malaysia. Acceptance means people from three different races embrace the uniqueness of others so that we may live with mutual respect for each other as a nation. DATO SRI MOHD NAJIB BIN TUN HAJI ABDUL RAZAK has stated that value of acceptance has been created which is based on the principle of justice for all Malaysians regardless of race, religion and background. Through this statement, it means that by practising the principles of acceptance, equality and sharing, Malaysias multireligious society could continue to live in peace, prosperity and harmony. For instance, in Malaysia, it is well-known with different kinds of celebration of festivals such as Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Deepavali and Christmas Day. Every year, Malaysian people will celebrate these festivals together as a nation. Despite having different of religious and cultures views, Malaysian people still celebrate in unity. Thus, this spirit of togetherness or acceptance should be fostered to achieve unity. Ladies & gentleman, We move to the second point. The second point is integrity. Integrity could be defined as the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. Our Prime Minister of Malaysia once again has stated that integrity is all about government relations with the people. 1Malaysia needs both leaders and citizens that value and act with integrity. Integrity results from the knowledge that one has been entrusted with something of great importance; that to be a Malaysian means having been entrusted with certain responsibilities that must be carried out. Despite our different

religious faiths and traditions, we are united as Malaysians under a common belief that there is something higher and greater than ourselves a Creator that has put all of us here to live side-by-side as one nation. For instance, in any religions, we are taught to be a responsible, honest in doing our jobs and leave corruptions behind the door. Although it is very easy to say, it is still very hard to be practiced by our people. Therefore, to cultivate integrity, people should come together as unity. Ladies & gentleman, My last point is UNITY CAN BE ACHIEVED THROUGH the REFORMATION OF EDUCATION SYSTEM. Through education, unity could be achieved. Education and knowledge are important fundamentals for any nation to succeed throughout history. If we could bring our memory back to our nation history in 1950s, upon independence, British left us with a segregated system of schooling with different orientations and levels of academic achievement based on races. For instance, Chinese school was situated in the city, Indian school was in the estate while, Malay school was in the village. The segregation aimed to hinder unity among Malaysians. To overcome this situation, the government should introduce one system which is single education system. According to Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah (an Umno supreme council member said), a single education system might be an ideal situation to foster unity among young people. He said that Malaysians should work on their difficulties together rather than harping on their differences. By introducing single education system, teachers are responsible to guide the students to realize the differences between races. So, teachers are responsible to teach that differences are not something bad but it should be treated as something unique. This practice should be continued to secondary schools, universities and in their daily life. Thus, unity could be achieved through reformation in education system. Ladies & gentleman, As a conclusion, unity is more than appearances. True unity is embraced inwardly as well as outwardly. People must be educated as to why and how they should come together, and then through mutual respect and acceptance allow each to live as they choose, embracing their unique cultures and religions under one set of laws that makes room for eccentricity but that respects the positive elements of difference. Such a nation, by this fact alone, is a model nation that all will look upon with the

greatest respect and admiration. That nation is Malaysia. Lets take it to greater heights and make it the pride of the world through 1 Malaysia.
