The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up and God kept all of His promises to Samuel. As Samuel grew older, all
the people of Israel knew that God had chosen him to be a prophet and judge. The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh, and there He revealed Himself to Samuel through His word. Samuel continued as judge over Israel all the days of his life. He traveled throughout the country, but he would always return home to Ramah. It was there that he built an altar to the Lord. When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges over Israel. But Samuels sons did not have the same love or dedication to God as did their father. Samuels greedy sons were bad judges and because of this the Israelites asked Samuel to give them a king to rule over the nation. It displeased Samuel that the people would reject Gods leadership and ask for a king. He prayed to God, and God heard Samuel's prayers. The Lord told Samuel to listen to the people and appoint a king to rule over them. He also told Samuel to warn the people that a king would put many demands on them. God told Samuel to select a man named Saul to be the first king of Israel. Samuel did as God instructed. The people of Israel now had their very first king. Saul started out as a good king, but as time went on he became disobedient and proud. Because of Sauls sin, God rejected him as king, so God sent Samuel to tell Saul that he was no longer fit to be king. Then God told Samuel to appoint a new king of Israel. Samuel was afraid that Saul may try to kill him when he heard that there would be a new king, but he trusted God. Samuel did as he was told and journeyed to Bethlehem to appoint David as the new king of Israel. After that, Samuel returned home to Ramah and refused to meet with Saul again for the rest of his life, although he felt very sorry for Saul. When Samuel died, all of Israel mourned his death.
