FLEXnet licensing system

Tekla Structures uses a new licensing system, FLEXnet Publisher License Management (further FLEXnet). FLEXnet is an activation-based licensing system provided by a company called Macrovision. In an activation-based licensing system you need to:

install and set up a license server activate your licenses point each client computer with Tekla Structures to the license server.

The main benefits of the FLEXnet licensing system are: You do not need hardware locks and password files. You can update and renew licenses more easily. You can create user groups with different access rights for different Tekla Structures configurations. You can handle licenses efficiently. You can activate licenses on a license server in a local area network. When you start Tekla Structures, a license is checked out from the license server. When you close Tekla Structures, the license is checked in and it is available for another user. You have multiple options for managing licenses. You do not have to activate all of your licenses on the same license server. You can activate half of your licenses on a common server and the rest locally on each users laptop, for example. You can easily change the location of the licenses by deactivating them on one license server and activating on another server. You can borrow licenses for offline usage.

2.1 Installing the Tekla Structures license server

The Tekla Structures license server installation package contains the license server files, the applications for license management and the user guides. To install the license server, run the

installation application available on the Tekla Structures installation DVD. You can also download the license server installation package from Tekla Extranet.

2.2 Modifying the license file

You need to modify the tekla.lic license file if you run the license server and Tekla Structures on separate computers. If you run the license server and Tekla Structures on the same computer, you can skip this section. To modify the license file: 1. 2. 3. Open the ..\TeklaStructures\License\Server folder on the server computer. Open the tekla.lic file with a text editor. Replace text localhost on the line SERVER localhost ANY with the host name of the license server.

4.

Save the changes and close the text editor.

2.3 Saving the entitlement certificate

You have been sent a Tekla Structures entitlement certificate in an e-mail. The entitlement certificate states the configurations, quantities and activation IDs of your Tekla Structures licenses. As a preliminary action for transferring license rights from Tekla to your license server, you need to save the entitlement certificate. Then you can open the entitlement certificate with Tekla Structures License Administration Tool and activate your licenses. To save the entitlement certificate: 1. 2. 3. Open your e-mail application. Open the entitlement certificate e-mail. Save the attached EntitlementCertificate.html file in the ..\TeklaStructures\License\Server folder.

2.4 Starting Tekla Structures License Administration Tool

You need to activate the licenses on the license server to be able to use them. When you activate the licenses, the license rights are transferred from the activation server at Tekla to the license server at your company or, in the case of a single user, on your computer. Tekla Structures License Administration Tool is the application used for activating licenses. To run Tekla Structures License Administration Tool, click Start > All Programs > Tekla Structures Licensing > Tekla Structures License Administration Tool. The Tekla Structures License Administration Tool dialog box opens.

2.5 Using a proxy server

If you do not use a proxy server, you can skip this section. If you use a proxy server, you need to enter the proxy server settings. If you are using a proxy server and direct communication to the Internet using SOAP over HTTP on the TCP/IP port 80 is allowed, you do not have to modify the proxy server settings. To enter the proxy server settings: 1. In the Tekla Structures License Administration Tool dialog box, click Action > Options. The Options dialog box opens.

You do not need to activate all the licences at once. You can activate part of the licenses now and part of the licenses later on some other computer, for example. Different configurations and different versions need to be selected for activation separately, but when selected, they can be activated all at once.

3.

Click the Activate

button.

Your license server contacts the activation server at Tekla. 4. After successful activation the License Activated Successfully dialog box opens. Click OK.

The activated licenses are displayed under the Activated Licenses area.

2.7 Notifying the license server about activated licenses

The license server must be notified about activated licenses. To notify the license server: 1. With administrator rights, click Start > All Programs > Tekla Structures Licensing >
LMTOOLS.

The LMTOOLS dialog box opens. 2. 3. Go to the Start/Stop/Reread tab. Click ReRead License File.

Upgrading from previous versions

4.1 Existing models

We recommend that you complete any models you are already working on using your current version of Tekla Structures. Once you save a model in Tekla Structures 14.0, you cannot open it in previous versions.

4.2 Replacing batch files with initialization files

In Tekla Structures 14.0, startup batch (.bat) files are no longer used and the settings are defined in initialization (.ini) files instead. The change has been implemented to make Tekla Structures Windows Vista compatible. The change is useful also in Windows XP, because Tekla Structures now appears in the list of most recently used programs in the Start menu. You can customize the initialization files according to your needs in the same manner as batch files. You can still create shortcuts by using parameter values. We recommend that you make all your customizations in the user.ini file, which is located in the ..\TeklaStructures\ 14.0\nt\bin folder. This way the customizations are kept when you install the next version of Tekla Structures.

See Initialization files in the online help.

If you do not want to start using initialization files yet, see Continuing to use batch files (p. 25).

Advanced initialization file setup

This section applies to you if you are an administrator and you need to customize the installations on an advanced level.

You can use the initialization files in the same manner as batch files. You can create customerspecific initialization files that include custom settings particular to each customer, a company and/or a single project. A company can also create custom initialization files for multi-user mode if needed. Initialization files have the following restrictions:

If EXIST and if NOT EXIST statements are supported, but you cannot use other if statements in initialization files.

You cannot use goto statements in initialization files. You cannot pass parameters in initialization files. You can call other initialization files, but you cannot call executable files in initialization files.

Below is an example of a batch to initialization file setup process:

Creating customer or project-specific initialization files

You need to break down previously defined customer or project-specific settings in the user.bat file into separate initialization files. These new initialization files can then be called in the startup icon target line. To break down the settings into several initialization files:

Continuing to use batch files

You can still use batch files if needed. If you have an advanced and complex system of company or project-specific batch files, you can keep on working the same way as before, as there is no technical need to change to initialization files.

If you continue to use batch files, you need to check whether the initialization files include any changes that you need to include in the batch files. You have to do this every time you upgrade to a new version of Tekla Structures. The installation does not copy or update any batch files. If you continue to use batch files, you need to remove or rename the initialization files. You cannot use batch files together with initialization files.

4.3 Customizing Tekla Structures

When you customize Tekla Structures (i.e. add or change drawing or report templates, catalog entries, etc.), we recommend that you create project and firm folders for customized files. This is a useful technique if you want to store the files for future use, or want to retain them when you install a new release. Tekla Structures does not replace files in the project and firm folders when you install a new release, so you retain your customized files without having to copy and paste, or export and import from previous versions.

To learn how using project and firm folders makes upgrading easier, see Project and firm folders in the online help.

Do not use the system folder to store customized files. You will avoid having problems or doing a lot of unnecessary work when you upgrade.

If you have customized previous versions without using firm or project folders, you will need to transfer that information to Tekla Structures 14.0. We strongly recommend that you now use firm or project folders. Working through the following questions will help you transfer all the information you need.

Have you used the Advanced options dialog box?

No: Nothing to do, please go to the next question... Yes: Good, that makes upgrading very easy. Start Tekla Structures and click Tools > Options > Advanced Options... to open the Advanced

Multi-user server installation

This section is for users who set up and maintain the Tekla Structures multi-user system.

A Tekla Structures multi-user system runs on a TCP/IP network and consists of:

A server computer running xs_server.exe A file server computer containing the master model Client computers running Tekla Structures

You can use the same Tekla Structures server computer for all multi-user models. However, if you run only one server instance on that server, you cannot restart the server in one job without disturbing the other models. Therefore, if you are familiar with TPC/IP ports and Tekla Structures shortcuts, you can easily set up several server instances running on the same computer but using different ports. When you have a separate server instance for each multi-user model, you can shut one server down without disturbing the other projects. This requires that you know how to check which ports are available. You also need to create one shortcut for each server instance. For example, if you have one server running on port 1238 (the default port) and another one running on port 8080, you need to create the following shortcuts:
C:\TeklaStructures\MultiUserServer\2.2\xs_server.exe servername 1238 C:\WINDOWS\system32\TeklaStructuresServer C:\TeklaStructures\MultiUserServer\2.2\xs_server.exe servername 8080 C:\WINDOWS\system32\TeklaStructuresServer

The first shortcut starts the server on port 1238, and the other one on port 8080. When you create a new multi-user model, you must enter the server name and port in the New dialog box. For example, if the server name is teklaserver and the port is 8080, you must type teklaserver,8080. If you are using the default port (1238), you do not have to define the port number.

Keep the Tekla Structures Server window open. If you close the window or log out from the server computer, the Tekla Structures server will shut down. Users should save their working models to the master model before the Tekla Structures server is shut down. If the server closes down prior to them saving their working models, simply restart it, then have users save their working models to the master model.
