Dear Journal,

Introduction

Love,
Name of writer

A journal entry is a personal recount. It is informal. It is usually used

to recount daily events and often includes the expression of feelings
and reflection on the events that had happened. The first statement

• The Simple Present Tense and the Simple Past Tense
Eg: This afternoon, my cousin and I took part in a drawing
contest.
I am so happy that we won the second prize!
• Adverb Clauses of Time (Time Connectors)

we use time connectors to link actions and events.

19187395.doc - 28 -
Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Primary School
Eg: Before I ate at the café, I went to buy a doll for my
cousin. After a while, I had lunch. Later, I went to the book

An informal letter
This is an example of what an informal letter can look like:

Purpose
 To communicate with someone informally about an event, situation or to
share ideas

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
 Use information provided in the stimulus to write an informal letter

Essential Understandings
 What is an informal letter?
An informal letter is a written piece of communication to a relative, a
friend or any acquaintance to inform him/her of an event, happening etc. It
may be a recount.

Schematic Structure
It begins with a salutation and greeting e.g. “How are you getting on?” or
“Hello!” for a very good friend. It is followed by the reason for writing and
ends on a cheery note.

Heading
Address of sender
Date

Salutation
Dear Cindy,

Body (Main content of letter)

Complimentary close
Love,
Signature/name

Postscript
PS: I forgot to tell you that I will be coming back to Singapore next Sunday.

19187395.doc - 31 -
Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Primary School

Audience
Most often, it is written for someone you know well e.g. a cousin, a friend, a
pen-pal.

Tone
Informal, personal and friendly

A friendly letter includes:

1. A heading where you write the date and address.

2. A salutation where you greet your recipient. You can open the letter with
“Dear…” or “Hi…”, followed by the name of the recipient and a comma.

3. A body where you write your message. It usually begins with you asking
the recipient how he or she is.

4. A complimentary close where you sign off with friendly phrases

like”Love,”, “See you soon!”, or “Take care!” You usually sign off with your
first name.

5. A postscript allows you to add something else to your letter, even after
you have signed off. It is not necessary to include a postscript in all friendly
letters.

Language
Use of personal pronouns
Example: I really enjoyed myself last week.

Use of second person nouns as you are addressing an intended recipient.

Example: You mentioned in your last letter that you were ill. Please take care
of yourself.

Present Tense is used to describe your feelings or what is happening at the

moment.
Example: I am so happy that you wrote! The weather is hot as I write…

Past Tense is used to describe things, actions and feelings of the past.
Example: Yesterday, I went to the shopping mall. It was so crowded!

Future Tense is used to describe actions of events that will happen some
time in the future.
Example: Next Saturday, my family will be going to Sentosa. We plan to
stay at the hotel for one night.
