IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

The C233 cordless handset is intended to be used in combination with a SOPHO iSMobile DECT system. Hereby Philips Business Communications declares that the C233 is in conformity with the essential requirements of Directive 1999/5/EC. A copy of the original Declaration of Conformity can be obtained via the name and address provided in this manual. Use this product only in countries where the appropriate authority has given its specific authorisation. Please refer to all documentation, which may be supplied with any part(s) of the phone system you are using. Power Requirements This product requires an electrical supply of 230 Volts AC. Safety Precautions - Do not open handset or charger. This could expose you to high voltages. Contact your service organisation for all repairs. - Do not allow charging contacts or battery contacts to come into contact with conductive materials such as keys, paper clips, rings, bracelets, etc. - Do not allow handset or charger to come into contact with water. Installation Place the charger on a flat, level surface or mount it securely. Do not place a charger or handset near: - water, moisture or damp areas. - heat sources, direct sunlight or unventilated areas. - devices which generate strong magnetic fields, appliances, fluorescent lamps, computers, radios, televisions or telefaxes. - areas where the unit may be covered, its ventilation impaired, liquid spilled into the unit or objects inserted into the unit through any openings. - areas with dust, vibration, shock or temperature extremes. Use This phone, like any cordless phone, operates using radio signals, which cannot guarantee connection in all conditions. Therefore you should not rely exclusively upon any cordless phone for essential communications (e.g. medical emergencies). UK - 3

IMPORTANT BATTERY INFORMATION

Charging and discharging The batteries can be charged and discharged hundreds of times but will eventually wear out. When the operating time (talk time and standby time) is noticeably shorter than normal, it is time to replace the batteries. Recharge only with the charger approved by the manufacturer. When a charger is not in use for a prolonged period of time, disconnect it from the power source. For good operations times, discharge the batteries from time to time by leaving the handset out of the charger and switched on until it turns itself off. Do not attempt to discharge the battery by any other means. Temperature extremes will affect the ability of your battery to charge. Notes: Use the battery only for its intended purpose. Never use any charger or battery, which is damaged or worn out. Leaving the battery in hot or cold places will reduce the capacity and 0 lifetime of the battery. Always try to keep the battery between 15 C 0 and 25 C. A phone with a hot or cold battery may temporarily not work, even when the batteries are fully charged. Dispose of used batteries in accordance with local regulations. Recycle ! Do not dispose of batteries in a fire.

INSTALLATION AND OPERATION Open the battery compartment by sliding the back of the handset upwards. Place batteries according to the + and signs in the battery compartment (+ side first). The handset uses two standard AA 700 mAh NiMH batteries. Close the battery compartment by sliding the back of the handset to its original position. The battery icon will flash because the status of the batteries is unknown.

To operate the charger you will need a mains connection with 230 V alternating current. Connect the power supply cable of the adapter to the connector at the side of the charger, then plug the AC adapter into the mains socket. When the handset is on the charger, the running block segments indicate the charging process.

When to recharge the battery


Before you use your telephone for the first time, charge the battery for at least 12 hours. This precaution helps to lengthen the life of the battery. To ensure optimum battery charging, replace the handset on the charger regularly. When the batteries run low during a call, you will hear 3 short beeps. After that you can talk for at maximum 3 minutes. Battery status indicator: : 0 25 % charged. If the icon flashes, batteries are empty. Charge immediately. : 2550 % charged. : 5075 % charged. : 75 100 % charged. : 100% charged and placed on the charger. When the icon flashes and the handset is not on the charger, then the status of the batteries is unknown. When the batteries are fully charged, you will have up to 10 hours talk time or 100 hours standby time.

Charging the battery


Place the handset in the charger.

The battery icon appears on display while battery is being charged. The battery is fully charged when you see steady blocks and a flashing frame on the display. While the handset is in the charger charging, the handset is fully functional.

Switching the handset on or off


Press the OK key for at least 2 seconds.

Display
The upper line is for icons: Radio signal icon Good radio signal with at least two columns. Bad radio signal: only the left-hand column is shown. Off hook icon On: handset in connection. Flashing: incoming call. Missed calls icon Incoming call(s) has not been answered. P Programming icon Mute icon Ringer is muted during call alert, or ringer is off (ringer tone 0), or microphone is muted during conversation. Battery status icon (refer to page 6.) The lower line is for digits and limited text: NO bASE Loud Handset not subscribed or out of range of DECT system. Monitor function is activated. Key lock is activated.

CALLING

Answering a call

or, when the handset is in the charger, lift the handset from the charger. When a call comes in, you can: - Stop the ringer by pressing C - Reject the call by pressing C twice During a call, you can: - Adjust volume by pressing P and # (also possible when handset is idle) - Go into enquiry by pressing R - (de-)Select loud-hearing by pressing M - Mute microphone by pressing C The number of the caller is displayed if it is provided by the callers phone system.

Ending a call
or, replace the set on the charger. The display returns to the idle state.

Using the caller/redial list

The combined redial/caller list automatically saves the last 10 used telephone numbers. When a new number is stored, the number at the bottom of the list is removed. A C in front of a number indicates this was a missed call. When you call a C marked number, then this number goes to the top of the list (as a dialled number) and the C is removed. Press P to select the list. Repeatedly press P, until you see the required number.

Missed call

When you missed a call the envelope icon is on the display. It disappears when you view the caller/redial list. Press P until you see a number preceded by a C. Press to dial the number.

Enquiry dialling

You can consult a third party during a call. You are connected to party A. Press R to place the original person (A) on hold. Dial the second person (B). You can now talk to party B. Repeatedly press R to shuttle between both parties.

Transferring a call

You can transfer a call to a third party during a call. Press R to place the original person (A) on hold. Dial the second person (B). When party B answers, you can talk to party B. Press to transfer the call.

Switch loudspeaker on Microphone mute

You want anyone in the area to hear your telephone conversation. Press M to switch on the loudspeaker and the conversation can be monitored.

You are connected to a party but you want to talk without that party hearing you. Press C. The display shows the mute icon. Press C again to re-activate the microphone.

Ringer mute (when a call comes in)

The handset rings but you do not want to disturb your environment. Press C and the ringer mutes. To reject the call, press C again or to answer the call press the hook key. When you end the call, the ringer is automatically re-activated. Tip: The ringer will only sound once, if you set the ringer tone to 1, see page 13.

MEMORY DIALLING Press P. Enter required memory location (09 , where 0 is position 10). You can press P until you see the required number. Press to dial selected number.

Press P. Press R. Press P. The display shows 01, and if present the telephone number stored on this memory location. Press P until you see required memory location, or enter required location (09, where 0 is position 10). Press OK. Enter the number. You can use C to remove wrong digits. Press OK to store the number.

Edit number in shortcut list

Follow the steps for Add a number to the shortcut list to edit or overwrite an existing number.

Remove number from shortcut list

Follow the steps for Add a number to the shortcut list but instead of entering a number, press the C key to remove the digits. Press OK to confirm.

CHANGING SETTINGS You can toggle between 2 volume settings; high and low. The last setting is remembered. For 3 seconds, the display shows either Hi or Lo. Press P, #.

Changing handset volume

Changing ringer melody and volume

Press P, R. Enter 6 when you want to change the internal ringer, or 7 when you want to change the external ringer. You will hear the current setting. The display shows e.g.: tone 53, where 5 is the number of the current melody and 3 is the current volume level. Enter required melody number (keypad digits 16). You hear the melody. Note that ringer melody 1 is always heard only once. Enter required ringer volume: press 0 for volume level 0 (soft); press 7 for volume level 1; press 8 for volume level 2; press 9 for volume level 3; press * for volume level 4; press # for volume level 5 (loud). Press the OK key.

Ringer mute

This switches the ringer on or off Press P, R, 8. When the ringer off, the mute icon is displayed when the set is in idle mode.

Key lock

You want to prevent accidentally pressing of keys. Incoming calls can be answered as normal. After ending the call, key lock is activated again. Press P, *. The display shows 8 dashes to indicate the lock. When you want to make a call, press the P and * keys again to unlock the keys. The keys are also unlocked when you put the handset on the charger.

Key click

You can switch the confirmation tone that you hear when you press a key, on and off. Press P, R, 9 to disable or enable key click.

SUBSCRIPTIONS

To make and receive calls you must be subscribed to a DECT system. Ask your communications manager for an AC (Authentication Code) number. You must enter this AC within 15 minutes, after this time the subscription period expires. A handset can simultaneously be subscribed to 5 DECT systems. If you already have 5 subscriptions and you want to enter a new one, first a subscriptions has to be removed. Ask your Communication manager to do this for you. You can connect to one DECT system at a time. Repeat this procedure 15 times if necessary.

Subscribe without using PARK


(Portable Access Rights Key) Press P, R, 2. The display shows: Pin Enter the AC code (4 digits) Press OK.

Subscribe with using PARK


Press P, R, 1. The display shows: bASE Enter the 15 digit PARK code. Press OK. The display shows: Pin Enter the AC code (4 digits) Press OK.

Edit a handset number


Press P, R, 3. The display shows: Edit Enter the required base station number (15). Enter the number you want to display in idle mode. Press OK.

Automatically selection of DECT system


This is the default setting Press P, R, 4, 0.

Manually selection of DECT system


Press P, R, 4. Enter the required base station number (15).

If a handset is not subscribed then the display shows: "NO bASE".

You hear 3 beeps during a call. During programming you hear 4 beeps. During programming the handset goes idle.
