Pork Barrel Should Be added To The Provinces IRA-Mercado By Quirico M. Gorpido,Jr. Maasin City, Southern Leyte-Newly-elected incumbent Governor Roger G. Mercado has the implication not to abolish the pork barrel or Priority Development Allocation Fund (PDAF), but instead to add it to the provinces Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA). He said this can be closely monitored by a committee in-charged in monitoring the funds expenditures. Upon the approval of the proposed Business Enterprise Board, establishing of Provincial Corporation would not be in conflict, if for instance, it would enter into transportation business or buy big fishing boats for fishermen to catch fish in our own city and municipal waters, he explained. On the other hand, Jani C. Arnaiz, PDI correspondent and NUJP member, told Mercado that when DILG Secretary Mar Roxas was questioned why he did not return his PDAF to the government coffer, he explained that the big budget his office has received is intended for the priority projects of the LGUs Chief Executives, who know well what kind of projects that are beneficial for their respective areas of jurisdiction. Mercado also said that he will instruct members of the Bantay Dagat to conduct sea patrol in the surrounding seas together with the PNP to catch illegal fishers.Illegal fishermen who would be caught fishing in our area would be fined P100, 000.00he stressed. He said this in reaction to reports that illegal fishers from other places are again coming in to catch fishes here. Subang Daku Update The Governor also informed about a new policy now implemented in the handling of the big rivers revenue. He said that the extractions of sand and gravel in Subang Daku as the result of rechannelization would be sold by the provincial government. He is currently the newly-elected Congressman of Southern Leyte-swapping legally their respective positions with his older brother Roger en route to their landslide win against
