Moorestown gets close to
bronze certification. PAGE 2
Moorestown honors alumnus Dave Robinson
By NICK COHEN
The Moorestown Sun
Moorestown honored one of its
most famous and popular alumni
during the Quakers season open-
er Sept. 12.
"Dave Robinson Night" brought
hundreds of people from
Moorestown as well as all over
South Jersey to honor the newly
elected NFL Hall of Famer. Robin-
son is a 1959 Moorestown gradu-
ate who was a star football, bas-
ketball and track athlete during
his high school career.
It was the right thing to do for
his hometown and alma mater to
honor his accomplishments and
his life, Moorestown High
School athletic director Neil Rosa
said. Everyone wanted to be a
part of this. Former teammates
were calling and neighborhood
friends were calling. Everyone
was extremely cooperative. They
just wanted to be with Dave.
Robinson said he was moved
to tears when Rosa reached out
saying that Moorestown wanted
to retire his number.
This jersey will be the one
that is most important to me,
Robinson said as he spoke to the
crowd. Ive had a lot of big mo-
ments in my life, marrying my
wife, the birth of my sons, win-
ning two Super Bowls, but noth-
ing can top being honored by
your hometown.
NICK COHEN/The Moorestown Sun
NFL hall of famer and Moorestown High School graduate Dave Robinson was celebrated at halftime of the Quakers regular season opener
Sept. 12. Burlington County freeholders, Moorestown town council and fans from around the state attended the event to honor Robinsons
achievements both on and off the field. Robinson is the first player in Moorestown High School athletics to have his number retired.

There is a light at the end of
the tunnel for Mooretowns Green
Team Advisory Committee,
which is seeking certification for
the town through Sustainable
Jersey.
In a year and a half s time,
Green Team Advisory Committee
Chair Catherine Ward explained
that the committee has gone to
great lengths to not only convert
Moorestown to a sustainable
town, but to also launch several
green initiatives to better the
community.
Promoting the idea of Sustain-
able Jersey, Moorestown Environ-
mental Advisory Committee
Head Chet Dawson and Economic
Development Advisory Commit-
tee Chairperson Jake Der Hagopi-
an joined the collaborative effort
in the beginning of 2012.
With a resolution passing in
early 2012, the Green Team was
established. After officers were
voted in, the committee immedi-
ately began working on certifica-
tion.
Were close to the end, Ward
said in regard to fulfilling the re-
quirements of a bronze certifica-
tion.
Ward said that prior to begin-
ning the certification process, the
committee had first made its
major submission to Sustainable
Jersey in June, which identifies
all the categories the town could
meet.
To be awarded a bronze certifi-
cation, a town must have a Green
Team, receive 150 points, com-
plete two out of the 17 priority ac-
tions and be certified in six out of
the 16 categories.
After completing its major sub-
mission, the Green Team then re-
ceived its submission back in
July, complete with comments
and suggestions on how to reach
its goal.
The township adopted a resolu-

The Moorestown Sun
Following the submission of a
petition to repeal the recently
passed pay-to-play ordinance,
Mayor Stacey Jordan suggested
the council rescind its approval of
the ordinance in her opening re-
marks at the Sept. 9 township
council meeting.
I thought we were going to be
ahead of the curve, Jordan said
later in the week.
She explained that the inten-
tion of the ordinance was to
make it easier for the township,
following a bipartisan agreement
between Gov. Christie and state
Senate President Steve Sweeney,
to mandate a uniform political
contribution policy throughout
the state.
Jordan explained that she
would rather implement a policy
than wait for state lawmakers to
do so, which could take a great
deal of time.
When there are 500 munici-
palities with all different laws,
then I think the only people who
profit from that are the lawyers,
Jordan said.
In addition to asking the coun-
cil to rescind the ordinance, Jor-
dan also urged the council mem-
bers to write to legislators to get
the process going.
The ordinance was passed on
Aug. 19 by a vote of 4-1 Council-
man Greg Newcomer being the
sole vote against the proposed or-
dinance.
With the passing of the ordi-
nance, the maximum contribu-
tion from professional business
entities to council candidates was
changed from $300 to $2,600. In ad-
dition, a maximum contribution
to township party committee was
raised from $300 to $7,200 and a
maximum contribution from $500
to $7,200 for a political action com-
mittee.
Newcomer had also continued
to voice his opposition as well,
submitting a letter to the editor
published in the Sept. 11 edition
of The Moorestown Sun.
In the letter, Newcomer raised
concerns about the increased con-
tribution amounts from profes-
sional business entities that are
allowed to contribute to both the
town council and political par-
ties, as well as the amounts al-
lowed to contribute to a PAC.
This enables a few people to
influence the outcome of a local
election, by their substantial con-

T
eachers are the backbone of a
school. They are the people
who shape our childrens edu-
cation, who help guide them through
their formative years to bigger and
better things.
A school, or school district, is only
as good as its teachers. Shiny build-
ings, the latest technology, extra-cur-
ricular offerings, a forward-thinking
administration and a supportive com-
munity would be meaningless without
good teachers.
Good teachers are the reason why
our school district is high performing,
which, in turn, is why families move
to our town.
Good teachers are the reason for
success at the next level, too. New Jer-
sey universities scored high in recent
national and regional rankings, and
their teachers are a main reason.
Princeton University was named the
No. 1 university in the nation, accord-
ing to the U.S. News & World Report.
In the North Regional rankings, the
College of New Jersey was No. 5,
Rider University and Rowan Universi-
ty tied for No. 18, and Rutgers Univer-
sity-Camden was No. 24.
Because of their value, teachers de-
serve to be treated well. They deserve
to be thanked. They deserve that apple
the kids bring them. They deserve to
be recognized and honored.
They deserve to be paid fairly, and
thats exactly what is happening lately.
The New Jersey School Boards As-
sociation recently reported that the de-
cline in pay raises is leveling off. For
settled contracts as of last spring, the
average pay increase for teachers was
2.25 percent. Thats slightly less than
the 2.37 percent average increase for
the 2012-2013 school year and a lot less
than the 4.5 percent average of five
years ago, but its still solid and much
higher than the historic lows of the
last few years.
Its good to see the teachers get what
they deserve. They deserve raises
higher than the current 1.4 percent
cost-of-living increase. They deserve to
be taken care of, as long as its not out
of whack with the rest of the working
world.
Its unfortunate that people and
health benefits are one of the biggest
costs of running our local school dis-
trict, and therefore, are one of the
biggest drivers of increased taxes.
But thats not their fault. Teachers
cant be punished for that, and more
importantly, our children cant be pun-
ished for that. We need good teachers.
in our opinion
We need good teachers
And to get good teachers, we have to pay for good teachers
Your thoughts
What are your thoughts on teacher
raises, salaries and health benefits? How
do you value a good teacher? Let your
voice be heard on the topic through a
letter to the editor.

tournament style challenge, on
the beautiful five-acre Perkins

Robinsons No. 89 and initials
were painted on the field as part
of the celebration. He was also a
part of the coin toss, using a com-
memorative coin from the Green
Bay Packers.
Before the game, Robinson
signed autographs and posed for
pictures for more than an hour.
Hugs were given, laughs were ex-
changed and stories of Vince
Lombardi were told. Rosa was not
surprised by the turnout as sup-
port for the event started in April.
I approached the board to re-
tire his number and both the
president and the vice president
were extremely supportive. The
ball started rolling from there,
Rosa said.
Burlington County Freeholder
Director Joe Donnelly, as well as
Moorestown Mayor Stacey Jor-
dan, attended the ceremony, pre-
senting Robinson with an official
township proclamation and news
that a scholarship would be start-
ed in his honor.
In addition to the number
being retired, friends and family
were working to raise money for
a bronze bust of his likeness to be
commissioned. The fundraising
goal was $10,000, which was met
at the event. The bust, when com-
pleted, will be housed in the
Moorestown Athletic Center.
Robinsons academic resume,
as well as his athletic, added to
his legacy. He was a straight-A
student while attending
Moorestown and a member of the
deans list at Penn State. Robin-
son went on to play for the Green
Bay Packers during their historic
championship run under leg-
endary coach Vince Lombardi in
the 1960s. He was a member of
the teams that won the first two
Super Bowls and was named to
the NFL's All-Decade team for the
1960s.
To top off a night of celebra-
tion, the Quakers came away with
a win that night, beating the Gold-
en Eagles of Seneca High School,
7-0.

The Moorestown Township
Council recently announced an
important phase in its ongoing
initiative to identify the most
cost-effective ways of providing
the high quality services that our
taxpayers expect and deserve.
The township recently adver-
tised for bids from private trash
haulers in order to begin evaluat-
ing the most effective and effi-
cient method of providing curb-
side trash collection. Once the
bids are received, council will be
able to examine the potential ben-
efits of outsourcing trash collec-
tion services, a trend which has
been met with success in many
municipalities. Mayor Stacey Jor-
dan endorses this step in the
council's cost-savings initiative.
This step (going out to bid) is
a necessity for council to evaluate
its options in providing trash col-
lection services. It is our goal to
leave no stone unturned when
looking for ways to become more
efficient and cost-effective, Jor-
dan said.
Taking this action represents
one facet of council's continuing
initiative to evaluate all aspects of
how the township provides essen-
tial services to its residents, by
identifying ways to do reduce
costs.
According to Deputy Mayor
Chris Chiacchio, In January,
this council committed itself to
finding ways to make significant
spending cuts. We are going out to
bid to determine the financial im-
pact associated with outsourcing
trash collection services.
Town council tasked Jordan
and Chiacchio to work with the
township manager to find signifi-
cant cost savings this year, with a
goal of cutting $1 million. While
this is a lofty goal for a municipal-
ity already considered one of the
best managed in South Jersey, it
is one the township is working
diligently at, according to Chiac-
chio.
I am optimistic about achiev-
ing significant savings by out-
sourcing trash collection, Chiac-
chio said. But this is only the
first of, what we hope to be, sever-
al initiatives designed to cut
spending. We must diligently and
aggressively analyze every expen-
diture and identify other areas in
which we can effectuate cost sav-
ings.
With the township currently
evaluating several initiatives that
could produce significant cost
savings, Jordan is cautiously opti-
mistic saying, Some of things we
are looking at may work and
some may not, but the key is to
completely evaluate everything
we do so we can determine
whether any improvements (in
the best interest of the taxpayers)
should be made.

tributions, Newcomer stated in
his letter.
During the Aug. 19 meeting,
Newcomer proposed that the con-
tribution amounts be lowered to
$100 per year for all contributors.
According to a press release
provided by Democratic Party
member Mark Hines, a petition to
repeal the ordinance containing
more than 1,200 signatures was
delivered to township clerk Patri-
cia Hunt on Friday, Sept. 6 after
more than 50 residents began
gathering signatures by going
door-to-door, asking neighbors
and family, and setting up on
Main Street.
The release also explained that
almost 150 signatures were ob-
tained on the first Saturday
morning of the drive on the side-
walk in front of the Starbucks on
Main Street.
Twelve days from the begin-
ning of their efforts, starting on
Aug. 21, the group had gathered
more than 1,393 signatures.
I have no problem taking it
back to what it was, Jordan said.
Jordan explained that she did
not know about the petition until
Friday, which along with several
phone calls, prompted her to
speak about ordinance in her
opening remarks.
She said that following her re-
marks, three residents expressed
their gratitude during public
comment.
Jordan also added that she
feels that the council is all in
agreement when it comes to re-
scinding the ordinance.

tion on Aug. 1 to revise the Con-
servation Element to the Master
Plan to include an Environmental
Resource Index. According to the
townships website, the ERI
serves as a map of significant en-
vironmental features within the
township.
The Green Team submitted for
the final time on Sept. 15, and it
now waits for word on certifica-
tion. If Moorestown is certified,
the town will officially be hon-
ored during a ceremony in At-
lantic City, sometime in Novem-
ber.
With a bronze certification,
Moorestown will have access to
grants from not only Sustainable
Jersey, but also corporations and
business that refer to Sustainable
Jersey as a baseline.
Identifying sources of money
is our job, Ward said.
She added that in the coming
week, the Green Team will be
identifying potential grants for
the township.
Last year, the township re-
ceived a $100,000 grant from Rut-
gers to enhance municipal storm
water management systems. In
addition, the township also re-
ceived an $18,000 grant for the
Moorestown Recreation Center
after changing the type of light
bulb used in the center.
Apart from acquiring potential
grants, Ward said that working to-
ward bronze certification has
also helped refocus the priorities
of the town.
It puts us on a path to be
thinking about sustainability is-
sues on a long-term scale, Ward
said.
In addition, she said the Green
Team is always looking to get res-
idents involved through events,
such as a recent movie night
which brought in approximately
35 residents.
One thing were really trying
to do is establish a sense of com-
munity with this initiative,
Ward said.
Other events include the Green
Teams Upcycling contest, in
which residents submitted their
best upcycled pieces. Awarding
the best submissions on
Moorestown Day, the Green Team
judged 14 entrants on projects
ranging from a planter created
from an old warehouse pallet to a
pencil holder fashioned from an
old soccer ball.
Ward also said the Green Team
is looking to work with
Moorestown High Schools Inter-
act Club and host an education
program about lead-based paint
in homes in the coming year.
Any one of those acts is some-
thing we can pursue grants for,
Ward said.
Ward also expressed gratitude
to the township officials, includ-
ing head of community develop-
ment Tom Ford and township
manager Scott Carew.
They really set the tone for
this, Ward said.
Any resident who is interested
in joining the Green Team Advi-
sory Committee can do so by at-
tending any one of the meetings
or by contacting Ward at (609) 214-
7126.
