The Best of Interweave Knits

"Best: of the highest quality, excellence, or standing." Last year, when we published The Best of Interweave Knits: Our Favorite Designs from the First Ten Years, we knew we had a fabulous collectionbut we also knew that it was only a matter of time before our readers chimed in, telling us that we'd left out THEIR favorite design. Some of the emails were quite eloquent in explaining why one design or another ought to have been included; some were simple, heartfelt stories about how a particular pattern had touched someone's life. So we decided to ask you: What patterns did you, our readers, think were the "Best of Interweave Knits"? We sorted through thousands of nominations (omitting only those already published in the Best of Knits book) and tabulated the results until we got your Top 10 designs. Then, we asked you to vote for the ONE design you thought was your

Readers Choice Awards

"Best of Knits." From those votes, we compiled the Readers' Choice Awards Top 5and those patterns are what you now hold in your hands! Five designs, all demonstrating the highest standards of talent and design excellence. We congratulate Norah, Evelyn, Stefanie, and Kate on their amazing work; we thank them for their wonderful contributions to the craft we all love so dearly. And now, from Interweave to you: The Readers' Choice Top 5 Patterns. We hope that you find these designs both inspiring and a joy to knit.

Sunrise Circle Jacket

design by Kate Gilbert
Originally published Spring 2006

Two half circles overlap in this design to form a neatly fitted cardigan with tapered sleeves. The sweater begins at the wrist and is worked up to the armhole then out across the front where strategically placed increases create a rounded edge. The curved bind-off edge is hemmed for a tailored finish. The back is worked straight up from the bottom; subtle darts add a little shaping at the waist. The cardigan closes with simple toggle buttons. Finished Size: 33 (35, 37, 41, 45)" bust

Stitch Guide:
S2kp2 (double decrease): Sl 2 sts as if to k2tog, k1, pass 2 slipped sts over knitted st.
Notes The back darts are worked with centered double decreases and paired increases. Hang a removable marker or safety pin in the stitch itself to mark the center stitch for each dart, rather than placing a marker on the needle between stitches, and move the markers up as you work. As an alternative to the k2tog tbl (knit 2 together through the back loops) decrease, you may use an ssk decrease (see Glossary), which is also a left-slanting decrease. The sleeve/front pieces can be worked with the circular needle right from the start, or begun on straight needles and changed to the circular needle to accommodate the increased front stitches as they are added. The softly spun yarn shown may separate when used for sewing the seams. For this reason, more durable tapestry wool is recommended for seaming and for crocheting the toggle loops.

Back:

Notes This pullover is worked in the round from the top down, in one piece. The only finishing is a small seam in each underarm and weaving in the ends. The center-front cable panel, worked over 26 sts, is worked from the neck to the hem of the body. At the waist, smaller cables are introduced on either side of the front cable (mirrored right and left and separated by a two-stitch knit rib) and continue around the back (also mirrored right to left). The sleeves are worked in reverse stockinette stitch, with the same arrangement of large and small cables. On charts, sleeve outline is followed for first chart repeat only. For each subsequent repeat, work all chart stitches.

Swallowtail Shawl
design by Evelyn A. Clark
Originally published Fall 2006

A simple bud lace pattern makes up the body of this little shawl. The pattern flows into a deep lily-of-the-valley border with a peaked edging. From the few stitches that form the center of the base of the triangle, the shawl is shaped by columns of yarnovers along the center spine and edges. The shawl is worked in a light-as-afeather laceweight alpaca that shows every detail of the intricate patterning. Finished Size: 23" from
bottom center point to top edge and 49" wide across top edge, after blocking.

Yarn: Misti Alpaca Lace

(100% baby alpaca; 437 yd [400 m]/50 g): #7120 sea mist, 1 ball.

Needles: Size 4 (3.5 mm).

Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Marker (m); safety

pin; rustproof pins for blocking; size E/4 (3.5 mm) crochet hook; waste yarn in contrasting color.

Gauge: 17 sts and 17

rows = 4" in Budding Lace patt after blocking.

Skill Level: Intermediate.

Notes The first and last 2 stitches of every row are worked in garter stitch for top edge border. The shawl increases 4 stitches every other row until Row 11 of edging. It is helpful to place a stitch marker after the yarnover and before the center stitch and to place a safety pin along side edge to mark beginning of odd-numbered rows. The shawl can be made larger by working it with fingering, sport, or worsted-weight yarn on larger needles.

Continental (Long-Tail)Cast-On
Leaving a long tail (about 12 to 1 [1.3 to 2.5 cm] for each stitch to be cast on), make a slipknot and place on right needle. Place thumb and index finger of left hand between yarn ends so that working yarn is around index finger and tail end is around thumb. Secure ends with your other fingers and hold palm upwards, making a V of yarn (Figure 1). Bring needle up through loop on thumb (Figure 2), grab first strand around index finger with needle, and go back down through loop on thumb (Figure 3). Drop loop off thumb and, placing thumb back in V configuration, tighten resulting stitch on needle (Figure 4). Figure 1 Figure 2

With waste yarn and crochet hook, make a loose chain of about four stitches more than you need to cast on. With needle, working yarn, and beginning two stitches from end of chain, pick up and knit one stitch through the back loop of each crochet chain (Figure 1) for desired number of stitches. Work the piece as desired, and when youre ready to work in the opposite direction, pull out the crochet chain to expose live stitches (Figure 2).
