SAFEST Workplace In North America

What is Behavior Based Safety?

Behavior Based Safety is a process of involving workers in defining the ways they are most likely to be injured, seeking their involvement and obtaining their buy-in, and asking them to observe co-workers in order to determine progress in reduction of unsafe procedures.
~Dan Peterson

1. Behavior Based Safety is a Process

Unlike programs, a process:
bContinues as long as the operation continues. bThe safety process can be continuously improved.

2. A Systems Approach Requires Attention to Three Areas

bThe work environment. bThe behavior.

bThe people (psychology).

A Proactive Approach Focuses on Behavior

Why focus on behavior? Behaviors are:
bObjective. bObservable. bDefinable. bMeasurable.

Behavior is a base for improving safety.

Benefits of Focusing on Behaviors

bIndicators for injuries and safety performance. bSymptoms of problems within a management system. bIdentify areas for improvement before injuries occur.

Employee Involvement is Critical

bAssociates are a source of expertise about behaviors, hazards, and prevailing attitudes. bEmployees are often in a position to use behaviorchanging tools on a regular basis.

Working Safe is a Struggle with Human Nature

bAt-risk behaviors are often more comfortable, convenient, and efficient than safe behaviors. bRisky behaviors rarely result in serious injury. bIts human nature to drift away from what we learn.

Pinpoint Critical Behaviors

Step One
b Which behaviors are critical to safe performance? b Establish an operational definition for the behavior so everyone knows exactly what is required for safe behavior.

Example: lifting and bending.

Step Two: Develop a Behavioral Checklist

b Consider including the name of the person being observed. b Determine demographic info for data collection.
b Date, department, shift, etc.
BEHAVIORAL CHECKLIST _______________ _______________ _______________ _______________

COMMENTS

b Allow space for relevant comments.

Step Three: Decide How to Process & Share the Data

b How to collect and compile data. b Analysis and display of data. b Sharing information.

Step Four: Establish Methods for Follow-up on Target Areas

bImplementation team recommends roles and responsibilities for the behavior effort. bAnalyze data to identify areas for follow-up.

What is the Purpose of Safety Coaching?

bIdentify & reinforce safe behaviors. bIdentify opportunities for injury. bCommunicate the risk. bHelp to identify a safe alternative.

COACHS PURPOSE

Who Benefits MOST from Safety Coaching?

bThe person being coached? bThe person doing the coaching? bThe organization that cares enough to encourage the coaching?

Vision Plus Behavior Makes a Difference Vision alone is only dreaming and behavior alone is only marking time. Together, vision and behavior can make a significant difference in an organization.

Changing the Safety Culture Safety is more than just being injury-free; its also about involvement, participation and ownership.

To meet our Goal We must begin Changing the Mindset

b Move

beyond the Traditional approach. pro-active safety systems. safety. BBS auditing (TBA) by all.

b Implement

b Behavior-Based b Comprehensive b Educate

the field so they can support the BBS process.

Ways to Analyze Behavioral Data

bTotal % safe by month. b% safe by specific behavior. b% safe by department. bNumber of coaching observations.
