Z. SMITH REYNOLDS FOUNDATION YEAR ENDED DECEMBER 31, 2010

PART IX-A - SUMMARY OF DIRECT CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES:

(1) $150,354.49 for the NANCY SUSAN REYNOLDS AWARDS - With prior approval from the IRS, in 1986 the Foundation established awards to be given annually to up to three North Carolina residents who have shown resourcefulness in tackling problems that may have resisted traditional approaches. The awards seek out and honor unrecognized individuals who have worked to make a positive difference in North Carolina . The awards are presented each year at a luncheon ceremony attended by over 350 people. The recipients receive an award of $5,000 for personal use and they are able to designate charitable recipients to receive an additional $20,000. (2) $135,943.90 for the SABBATICAL PROGRAM - In 1990, with prior approval from the IRS, the Foundation established a sabbatical program for individuals in paid full-time leadership positions who have served their North Carolina nonprofit organization for at least three years . The sabbaticals were established to provide an incentive to leaders of charitable organizations to continue their charitable work, and to improve and enhance their leadership capacity , skills, and talents . Each recipient is awarded $ 25,000. Some will not take their sabbaticals until 2011. (3) $138,977.81for SPECIAL PROJECTS, OPPORTUNITIES, CONFERENCES AND MEETINGS: (A) $41,352. 14 for meetings and research on issues facing women in North Carolina , including economic exclusion , violence at home and in the workplace and the need for leadership development. (B) $39,356.20 North Carolina has a significant need for school building principals that are adequately prepared to turnaround low performing schools and to lead high needs and low wealth schools. These funds are used to assist the state in developing alternative licensure programs for aspiring principals and to improve professional development for existing principals. (C) $3,145.00 for the development and implementation of a project to assist the Foundation in its ability to understand how community development organizations are working. (D) $28,324.98 having an accurate census count in 2010 is important to the State of North Carolina as well as to the population groups which have traditionally been undercounted. The Board approved this funding so that the Foundation could assist not for profit organizations in the state doing outreach and training to diminish the census undercount and to provide coordination of these efforts. (E) $20,757. 40 two environmental areas that are ripe for policy innovation and implementation at the state level are water use and allocation and the second is energy efficiency and the new energy economy . Costs would include travel to bring key experts from outside the state to help inform debate in NC and facilitated discussions among key stakeholders through convenings of various sizes.
