Over 1,000 attendees enjoyed Strathmores Sept. 6 launch of the Tour of Alberta, as over 120 pro cyclists raced from the towns streets all the way to Drumheller. It was a great success. I think that it put Strathmore on the map, said Mayor Steve Grajczyk. As we were speaking on the stage, it was being streamed live to 350 million viewers around the world. To me, it was a real plus. This was the first year for the Tour of Alberta; the Alberta government is backing the project for another two years. Grajczyk and his staff are already encouraging to have a tour stage end in Strathmore next year. I think I would love to see that happen, said Tracy Simpson, recreational events and communications coordinator for the Town. Its a bit bigger, we get to put on an awards ceremony, and have a bigger festival. I think now that people have seen what its all about, the Town will really get behind it. If were successful, it would be just an amazing experience. Grajczyk followed the riders along the route in the pace car, and called it one of the most exciting things Ive ever done in my life, it was such a thrill. Driving with an Olympic cycling silver medalist, the pace car stayed one minute ahead of the racers. We were going down the hill of the highway going 90 km/h. They were right behind us, he said. The overall winner of the tour also won the Stage 3 day from Strathmore to Drumheller; Australian Rohan Dennis of Team Garmin-Sharp finished with an average speed of 43 km/h over 170 km on Sept. 6, and had an aggregate time of 17 hours, 45 minutes, and 40 seconds over the five race days. I came into this race in pretty good form, said 23-year-old Dennis. I really didnt know how it would play out throughout the week. I guess it played out well. So, Im a little surprised. Its the biggest win of my pro career. The top Canadian winning the Maple Leaf jersey was Ryan Anderson of Optum P/B Kelly Benefit Strategies, with an aggregate time of 17 hours, 49 minutes, and 36 seconds; he finished eighth overall, while Canadian favourite Ryder Hesjedal placed 60th. Homework for new candidates

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor For those who think campaigning for the municipal election is just about hanging signs and shaking hands, think again. The extensive information session held on Sept. 5, at the Town of Strathmore revealed there is a wealth of information that those considering office should take into consideration. Some people think that it is just the first and third Wednesday per month that they have to attend. Thats not it, said Dwight Stanford, chief administrative officer (CAO). There are also good selections of committees they need to serve on. Not to mention all the subsidiary materials that need to be reviewed, like the Municipal Government Act, which is a hefty tome in itself. Department heads and administrative staff outlined a comprehensive overview of areas of knowledge, roles and responsibilities that councillors or mayoral successors would encounter. Facts about what issues were developing for the coming term were presented. One example was the approximate $2.5 million deficit faced yearly to run recreational and civic centres in Strathmore. The need for new residents to lift the burden of committed costs for residential water and utility commitments was also mentioned. The retention of an on-staff development and planning officer was mentioned as an area that needed to be reinforced. Staff also went over some of the essential election material needed to file their nomination papers and run their campaigns. Each of the department heads outlined their staff roles and responsibilities as well. There were a handful of men interested in the possibility of running for office, some with over 30 years residency in the town. I found the evening very informative, said Allan Auger. Most of the other participants were still deciding if they would run or were keeping their options open before they chose which position they were considering. Both Bob Sobol and Pat Fule, current council members, were also on hand for a refresher course. Sobal said sometimes people come in thinking they can change the way things are done in the Towns different departments. He has learned that is not the case and the Town staff are very capable. He found them very helpful throughout his term in office. I think one important thing is to trust the support staff to do their jobs. We are not here to bang the nails or oil the wheels. There were no potential woman candidates that attended the meeting. The election will be held October 21, with voting at the Civic Centre. Advanced polls will be held at the town office, Oct. 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nomination papers with the $250 fee, have to be filed on Sept. 23 from 8:30 am.-noon. No late entries are allowed. There will be candidate forums held at the Civic Centre on Oct. 3 and Oct. 9.

New building eases squeeze

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Staff at the County administration building will be encouraged by Wheatland councils decision to go ahead with further development on the Administrative building expansion. They also voted to support the council chamber enhancement and front office upgrades. From what I hear from our staff and what I see, there is definitely a need, said Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Alan Parkin. The pressure of additional growth in programs and staff, and accommodating WFCSS in the building, has left working areas seriously cramped. The small Protective Services office is shared by four people. File rooms have been filled to overflowing, leading to housing overflow in several file rooms throughout the building. The data copying centre sits between administrative staff desks in full view of the reception area with staff crossing other staff working areas to retrieve copies. There have been several opportunities for the county to host interns in the various departments, but they had to be refused as the space to accommodate them was not available. Currently the county office building houses 31 staff in 19 offices and front workstations. It is anticipated that staffing needs will be maintained or increased slightly over the next 10 years. The addition of office space will secure room for growth for the next ten years, if past and present patterns continue, said Parkin. The proposal is an addition of 12 metres by 40 metres on the east end of the existing building which will be designated as office space. It still leaves room for further expansion if needed in the future. A 12 metre x 12 meter addition to the west end of the building will house a multiuse space used for meetings, an Emergency Operation Centre, or training. Five existing office spaces will be reduced to two, to allow access corridors for the new spaces, and the expropriated three offices will be relocated in the East wing. There will also be improved storage spaces and multiuse areas. Safety and security concerns will see improvements to the front reception area, so that workers can feel safe if required to work evenings. There will be a new visitor policy that will help locate them in the building in the event of an emergency. The Protective Services manager briefed council on several initiatives that he was working on and it is expected a security system will be in place after renovations take place. Council made it clear that they wanted the public to feel welcome and architectural space should reflect that attitude in any of the new designs and policies. Council approved moving ahead with architectural drawings and requested a cost analysis, so they could consult further with the public. They hope to gather feedback at an open house and from comments on the county website. Parkin is hoping new architectural drawings will make clear how the expansion will better serve county needs, now and for ten years to come. Parkin said this project will be funded from reserves and/or Provincial grants. Current tax revenue will not be utilized to fund this project. No increase in taxes from current or future years will be required to fund this project. The Council upgrades are approximated at $345,000 with the total project estimated at $1.5 Million. Council was hoping to have the drawings and open house prior to the fall elections.

Worlds best roll into town

Continued from Page 1 I think its going to do a lot for bicyclists, bike enthusiasts, and for the young population in general, said Grajczyk. I learned a lot, its quite an exciting sport and for a beginners sport, its pretty reasonable to get into. Over 100 volunteers were needed to put on Strathmores festival. It was so exciting to see our volunteers and to see what a great job they did, said Grajzcyk. I think an event like that brings out a lot of community spirit. People gather together, and celebrate, said Simpson. It makes you happy to live where you live.

Hamper funds confusion

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter A request for the Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper Society was made to town council at the Sept. 4 regular council meeting. The society has been receiving funds from Wheatland County for a number of years to help support the hamper program. The funds, which equaled $5,000, have been used in the past to purchase turkeys and hamper items for residents of Strathmore, Wheatland County and surrounding communities. The Christmas Hamper Society requested a grant from the town in the amount of $2,700 to be able to purchase items for the hampers for the society. There was some confusion at the council meeting as to whether the county would still be involved in helping support the program. It was suggested that the $5,000 be split with 46 per cent covered by the county and the remaining 54 per cent be

granted through the town because of the participation from the two different areas. Town council was unclear whether the county would indeed still be contributing to the program. A decision for the $2,700 grant was put off until clarification was given by Wheatland County. We have every intention of contributing for that and forwarding any food donations or anything else that would come in, said Lynn Walker, program coordinator for Wheatland Family and Community Support Services (WFCSS). She clarified that what had happened previously was WFCSS did a lot of administrative help for the program before the town formed its own FCSS office. Now WFCSS is no longer providing the administrative portion, but Walker said the county still has every intention of supporting the program because it is a definite need for the residents. She said the funding is not coming from WFCSS, but is coming from the county of Wheatland. The request for funding will return to the Sept. 18 regular town council meeting for a decision.

Did you know that our bodies contain about 10 trillion human cells. Coexisting with these cells are bacterial cells numbering 100 trillion. These bacterial cells are called the microbiome of the body and play important roles in digestion, skin health and our immune system. Bacteria arent all bad. The total fertility rate in Canada in 2011 was 1.61. This the average number of children per woman. The lowest rate was in B.C. at 1.42 while the highest was in Nunavut at 2.97. Overlay combines Messy Vibrancy with Railroad Heritage

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor The downtown overlay plans move toward a public hearing on Sept. 18, with a few new changes that were added by a volunteer working group and town administrative and planning staff. The working group is in place and we have had good feedback from the open houses, said Patricia Maloney, the contract planner retained to help with the project. It is not a new idea. It is a common tool for the town to use. Many communities in Alberta have used overlays as part of their rebranding process and it becomes part of the towns identity to external audiences. The first reading of the bylaw has been passed and if council approves second and third reading, staff will move ahead with a special rezoning package. All parts of the plan are expected to improve economic, business, recreational and land use opportunities. Planners are interested in feedback from the public as to where the boundaries should be applied. They are proposing three different sections with possible allowances for different types of residential and commercial use. The specifics proposed by the plan are posted on the Town of Strathmore website www.strathmore.ca The working committee has chosen to merge Railroad Heritage and Messy Vibrancy themes in efforts to lend character to the downtown core. The Railroad Heritage was chosen to recognize the historical ties in the community, and Messy Vibrancy was to increase interest and incorporate art by local artists into the plan. While Messy Vibrancy wasnt specifically defined, planners used the painted exterior of Strathmore Florist or the gardens of Red Carrot as examples. Murals on bare walls, low maintenance seating, interconnected walkways, upgraded alley accesses and open public areas leading to unique businesses with interesting window displays were also part of the vision. Unique signs and awnings along with greenery will be encouraged. Presenters did not elaborate how the two theme ideas would be synchronously merged. In past open houses the downtown business community took exception to forced compliance to the overlay. The plan does not require owners of existing buildings to currently modify their building frontage, but if upgrades are done they will be encouraged to incorporate some of the new components into their plans. The town is hoping to encourage businesses to do this by negotiating nonfinancial benefits for interested parties, or help develop partnerships between businesses. There will be some new requirements for vacant buildings. There was no statistical data presented at this time to measure or evaluate the potential success for the plan, however Maloney stated that to achieve success, the downtown area needs interesting activity and businesses to attract people 24 hours a day, seven days a week. No cost analysis for the plan was presented at the Sept. 6 open house. Many of the town council and operational staff attended. The town will be responsible for all infrastructure development. For example, installation of unique lighting, subsurface work, handicap friendly curbs, possible brick pathways and seating areas, maintenance of parks, etc. They have also committed to use town resources to support festivals and events in the downtown areas. Planners are encouraging residents to continue to submit their suggestions to the Town office. Anyone wanting to present concerns at the public hearing must contact the Municipal Clerk at 403-934-3133 to schedule a time that you will be heard and submit a written summary of what you want to discuss or present by Wednesday, Sept. 11. The overlay is expected to be implemented in the spring of 2014.

Decade of service ends

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Councillor Ken Sauve plans to step down from public office after close to a decade of service to Gleichen, Cluny and surrounding area and the ratepayers in Wheatland County. Looking over his career Sauve said he had always been interested in politics. His first nudge to seek office was when he was involved with improving surface rights for area landowners. It was an issue that he carried into his first term. A desire to affect a positive change propelled him to garner support, with representatives from other municipalities under the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties. They reviewed the Surface Rights Act and submitted suggested actions for consideration to the Alberta Government. There were always other issues, you dont stop and work on just one issue. There were a lot of them, Sauve said. One thing I was pretty proud of was the Marigold Library System. When I came to council, we worked to become part of the Marigold Library system. We also established all the rural address signs, which are really beneficial to EMS, ambulance and fire, Sauve said about two of his career highlights. His decision to step down was influenced by careful consideration to the requirements the commitment of another four years of service would mean. Public office demands many hours of service. He said he talked with his wife and they decided they would like to travel while they still have their health. He said he was also looking forward to spending more time with his grandchildren and family. Sauve has learned some lessons along the way and he has some sage advice for the up and coming candidates. They have to run an election. When I started out, I knew if I wanted it I had to get out and talk to people. I called at every house and talked to about 80 per cent of the people. I learned that issues I thought were important were important, but everybody else had important issues too. I hope that whoever gets in there, as Councillor or Reeve, uses that to listen to everybodys concerns and not be a single issue person, said Sauve. He suggested that new candidates sit in on council meetings before running, as he found that very beneficial. Sauve said he was always thankful for the communitys support throughout his terms of office. All residents, and especially the residents in my constituency that voted for me and supported me, I appreciate 100 per cent. I also want to put praise on the staff of Wheatland County. We are fortunate to have top end staff in this county. It is one of the most highly thought of Counties in the province and that is a lot to do with the staff. They were a pleasure to work with, said Sauve. The praise also comes back to Sauve with this comment from Reeve Glenn Koester. Ken represented not only the citizens of Division 2, but all of Wheatland County with fairness. He always considered the potential impact of any decision on the future wellbeing of Wheatland County and its residents. Kens insights and knowledge of Wheatland County helped make him an essential member of council. Ken is a team player with integrity and a good sense of humor and his input at council will be missed; Wheatland County is a better place thanks to Ken, said Reeve Glenn Koester. Koester wished Sauve good luck in all his future endeavors. Sauve is expecting his final motion and vote will be cast sometime in October.

Thought for the Week ~ Could it be that what we are waiting for, isnt as importatnt as what is happening in us, while we wait.

Homebuyers incentives
Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Chief Administrative Officer Dwight Stanford announced at the Sept. 4 regular town council meeting a new incentive program for new homebuyers in Strathmore. Anyone purchasing a new house in the town will be given a free one-year family swimming pass for public and family swimming. They will also be given a free pass for family and public skating for one year, and a free family library membership for a year. Stanford said the program ends in April so anyone wanting to be a part of the program must purchase before then. The program and its success rates will be brought back before council in April to discuss the possibility of extending it. Realtors will need to show signed agreement of a new home purchase, and then the town will provide them with the pass to deliver to the buyer. 55 Games appointments Earlier this year Strathmore won the bid to host the Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games in 2015. A 16-person board is needed to plan, coordinate and implement the games. At the Aug. 4 council meeting, council approved the terms of reference for the board of directors. Upon accepting the terms of reference, council also appointed Donalda Ledene as the chair of the Alberta 55 Plus Games Board of Directors. Ledene was an integral part

LifeStyles
of the successful bid process to bring the games to Strathmore. She is a retired teacher and active Lions Club member. She has also attended the 55 Plus Games numerous times with her husband. Library day and appointments Council accepted a request from the Strathmore Municipal Library board to proclaim Oct. 5 as Strathmore Municipal Library Day. The boards request came because they would like to promote the services and the benefits the library has for its patrons. The library board of trustees has two new faces sitting at the meetings. Council accepted Vanessa Vetterl and Randy Service as new trustees for a one-year term. Well site setback Council gave support to WestCreek Development to initiate a request with the Energy Resources Conservation Board regarding a well site. There is an existing well site where the developer hopes to build, and they would like to see the setback requirement relaxed from 100 metres to 50 metres. Development Officer Harry Salm said council is not granting the relaxation but instead they are supporting the request that goes to the ERCB. I have absolutely no problem with the relaxation of the setback on this, said Councillor John Rempel. The well is located in Lot 1; Block A, Plan 941 0061, which is within NE 15-24-25 W4M.

Strathmore United Church building turns 50

Donalda Ledene Strathmore United Church In 1918, the Presbyterian and Methodist churches in Strathmore merged to form the Union Church. Then on June 10th 1925, the Congregational Church joined these two denominations to form the United Church of Canada. The original United Church building was located where the Provincial Courthouse now stands. The congregation in the 1950s was made up of members and adherents from several surrounding communities including Ardenode, Cheadle, Lyalta, Namaka, and Nightingale who agreed to attend the Strathmore United Church for all services. When the present church was built during 1962-63, much of the work was done by volunteer help. Farmers brought their trucks to haul dirt and building materials while others brought tools and their sweat equity. Many members of the congregation pitched in to help complete the church which was dedicated on Sept. 22, 1963. On June 22, 1972 a mortgage burning ceremony was held. Since that time many modifications have been made to the building. In 1984 there were changes made to the front of the sanctuary to make it more user friendly. During 1995 a larger addition was built to replace the original entrance to the church. More storage space became available in the new basement, and an elevator now enabled access by handicapped individuals to the other levels of the building. Other features of the new addition included a ground level washroom, a larger gathering area inside the church entrance, and new offices for the minister and church secretary. In the foyer, three beautiful stained-glass windows, originally memorial windows placed in the old church in 1945, were incorporated into the new addition. A dedication of this addition was held on Mar. 24, 1996, and the mortgage was burned on Sept. 26, 1999. Buildings do not make a church, just as a house does not always make a home. The members of the congregation, each in their own way, find a niche where their talents may be utilized to carry out Gods work within our congregation and the larger community. An example of this is reflected in the 1960s formation of a Soiree Social group spearheaded by senior members of the church. Their efforts resulted in the formation of the nondenominational Happy Gang, a seniors group still active within the community of Strathmore. Over the years our congregation has supported many church programs for children and youth. These include Explorers, Canadian Girls in Training (CGIT), Hi-C, Junior Choir, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and summer day camps. Numerous social activities and fundraisers including suppers, picnics, breakfasts, canoe trips, camp-outs, talent shows and game nights continue to be enjoyed by all who participate. Over the years our church building has also been home to a wide variety of organizations that provide great benefits to our community at large. Some of these include: Play School, Alcoholics Anonymous, Time-Out for Young Mothers, Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS), Girl Guides, S p a r k s , Brownies, Beavers, Cubs, Music Lessons, a Fetal Alcohol Support Group, Quilters, Dance Groups, the Gleichen Choir, and more. The United Church Women have done a great deal to contribute to the life of the church with numerous activities over the past 50 years. One of their major projects has been the organization and operation of Spring and Fall Thrift Sales, first initiated in 1976. This event continues to support projects in the church, the community and the world at large through our Mission and Service Fund. As we recall the past 50 years and look forward to the next 50 years, we invite the community of Strathmore to share in our celebration. A special Anniversary Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22, followed by a supper at 5 p.m. Tickets for the supper are available for $5 from the Church Office or by contacting Donalda Ledene at 403-934-5871.

County Peace Officers updated Wheatland Council with July statistics

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Officers conducted 53 traffic calls with two overweight citations. Part of their job description involves providing assistance to other emergency services. In July, peace officers helped the RCMP on five occasions, EMS and Fire three times and other county departments twice. In the complaint department they addressed seven animal control issues, four environmental concerns, three unsightly bylaw infractions and three general reports. Legion Military Service Books of Remembrance County council donated $145 to the publication of the Legion Military Service Book that is circulated throughout the province. The book ensures that the memory and stories of all our veterans are passed onto the next generation. After publication the copies can be obtained at the Legion. If you have a story that would be interesting, or you want to submit a picture and story of your loved ones, contact Military Recognition Book, PO 1266 Stn. M, Calgary, AB T2P2L2 or email: www.vetbook@ abnwtlegion.com. For more information call toll free 1-866-580-8387. They do take advertising and rely on donations to keep those memories alive. Help wanted Carseland is interviewing for a new Volunteer Fire Chief. The hall is currently operating under the supervision of Mark Hielman, who is chief for both the Strathmore Rural hall and interim Chief for Carseland. However, the executive felt the burden of responsibility was too great for a long term and decided to post the position for the Carseland hall. The new posting is looking for someone with five years experience in the fire industry. They are required to have the Fire ETC series courses S300, S400, S1100 or equivalencies. Candidates must have a clean class five license with air certification and Standard First Aid and CPR. A criminal record check will be required. The job also requires a certain amount of administrative office work. Sources say a number of candidates have applied. The deadline for application has now closed, with interviews beginning this week. Candidates will be interviewed by a panel of three evaluators They hope to assess the applicants by Sept. 26 and have their decision made by October 1.

Citizen of the Month

Mayor Steve Grajczyk nominated the Strathmore Lions club as his choice for the August Citizen of the Month award. Grajczyk said the Lions club has contributed greatly to the community with the donation of the spray park, contributions to the Handi-Bus, Aquatic Centre, Crisis Shelter and numerous other projects. Lions Vice-President Greg Helfrich accepted the plaque on behalf of the club.

Milestone for Old Red

Pat Fule Fule for Thought Weve just hit a milestone in the Fule family. Most of you, who know us, know Old Red. Old Red is our 1996 Ford Windstar. We bought it here back when there was a different Ford dealership at the present ones location. Old Red hauled around a lot of kids over the years, to all sorts of sporting and social affairs. In fact, its kind of scary to realize just how many people know me in Old Red. Its pretty much impossible to park anywhere, without people knowing where I am! Well, the old timer is about to be let go. His speedometer just quit working, his brakes are weak, he needs new tires, and hes got 285,000 km on him. Hes been amazing, and weve only had one major repair bill. However, the electrical system is falling apart, and not all the doors and windows work! Old Red had one of the first portable VCR units built into a middle console. In fact, after buying him, we had to drive him to Airdrie to get that installed. All the trips and all the movies eventually caused that VCR to kick the bucket, and we moved on to a DVD player. Old Red just kept on truckin. Hes driven us all over the place, to Vancouver and back a few times, and once he took us up Going to the Sun Highway in the States. I believe I was a bit panicky on that road, with its huge drop-offs and cliffs, and I re-discovered the power of Prayer! Weve been through blistering sun, rain and hydro-plaining, kids spilling all sorts of concoctions, snowy blizzards, and the family dog, for the last 13 years! In fact, its the perfect van for the dog, because it has a tall middle console, where hes loved to sit and watch traffic, for years. All you have to say to our dog, is: car ride, and he goes crazy, ready for cruisin! Brodies always been a good dog on rides ... he can go for hours with no problems. It is a bit embarrassing when he scratches at the passenger door window whenever a motorcycle goes by, though. For some reason, hes always been fascinated by motorbikes, and he has to try and get their attention! Maybe hes trying to catch a ride I think hed have been an excellent motorcycle dog, you know, the ones who actually wear goggles?! Another reason Old Red is perfect for our brown and white dog/human, is that the van runs with the ignition key out of the steering column. So, on hot days, if I have to run into a store, I can take out the key, and hes in cool, frosty comfort. In fact, there have been a few times when Ive seen people walk toward Old Red thinking Brodies in heat distress! However, when they get closer and can hear Old Red whirring, wheezing, and its fan blowing, they realize Brodies actually cooler than they are! Ill flop into the van sweating, to be greeted by the coolest dog in Strathmore, his fur and ears blowing in the chilled AC! In 17 years, weve never had to do anything to the AC system, its as if Old Red is keeping that system running for his furry pal! When you think about it, a family vehicle is where you spend a great many hours with your kids. Old Red has seen us at our best and happiest. Hes driven us to funerals as we say goodbye to friends or family. Hes been borrowed for birthday parties, for a son at university where some weird neighbour took a bat to his front fender! Hes protected us with his seat belts, dual air bags, ABS breaks, and once his oh so nimble steering, helped me dodge a huge evergreen tree that fell off a landscaping truck, right in front of us! Hes even tried hard to be a truck for me, as I loaded him up with bags of dirt, shrubs, and fertilizer. Hes hauled lumber, garbage, and recycling hes been a boss! This last weekend, the Fules bought a slightly used truck. I havent broken the news to Red yet, but hes no dummy. In a few days, hell see the newer truck, and even though its also a Ford, hes going to be sad. Hes going to know. Hell put two and two together in his mini van brain, and realize that we cant keep all these vehicles. Oh sure, well all be brave, and Red will carry on somehow, in some form. Maybe hell be parted out, or maybe a kind soul will fix him up a bit for his golden years! There are a lot of young people who snowboard hed be an awesome snowboard carrier and they could have a video player to play their recorded jumps and crashes! If none of that happens, Im going to try and find him a nice farm, where he can drive around with all the other old Ford Windstars! Yeah, hed like that.

Becoming a community builder

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Through a competitive process the Town of Strathmore and Wheatland County were selected to be a lighthouse community for the Becoming a Community Builder initiative. This is an opportunity to increase volunteerism, business profitability and strengthen community resiliency through training in community capacity building emerging training practice, said Teri McKinnon, chair of the steering committee at the Sept. 4 town council meeting. Becoming a Community Builder is a 15-week competency-based community and professional leadership development program offered with two distinct but simultaneous learning tracks. One of those tracks is for the general adult community service provider, non-sector driven. The other track is specifically for high school students. The purpose of Becoming a Community Builder initiative is based on two very simple principles. One, that people closest to the problem are the best equipped to solve the problem, said McKinnon. And two that education and support of grassroots organizations and community leadership knowledge aligns time, talent and treasure towards a common goal. The purpose is to prove and establish in Strathmore and Wheatland County an emerging practice that when present enhanced community leadership capacity makes great things happen. Six desired outcomes were thought of for measurement of the attainment of instigating this initiative. McKinnon listed the top three, which include: increased alignment and connectedness of the community; the increased entrepreneurialism and support for local business; and enhanced leadership training for youth. Upon being selected as a lighthouse community, there was a leadership development program, and training on how to deploy the program in Strathmore. Access to the program is unlimited. All it requires is a username and a password. The program will remain free and accessible to Strathmore and Wheatland County for life. That means it can be reused for high school students, it can be reused for new executives on community service boards, it can be reused as training for elected officials or any business team development, said McKinnon. She asked for the participation of council in the actual program so they can see first hand what it is all about. She also asked for a one-time grant of $1,000 to go towards the tuition of the program. The tuition that was paid by Bow Valley College was $7,500 and they have recouped some of those costs thanks to some local support. The program is on demand but participants can go to the live stream webcast and follow the program on the 21 one day change continuum. McKinnon said though if you want to go in and do the competency on a Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. then all you have to do is log on. Its a really non-traditional and exciting learning continuum, said McKinnon. Ian Hill developed the content. Hill is the founder of the Let Them Be Kids Foundation, which is a North Americanbased organization that builds skateboard parks and playgrounds. He also is the executive director of the Changing Point, which was contracted by the government of Alberta to pilot a test project at Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo. The pilot test project, Becoming a Community Builder, was well received and now other Alberta communities have been selected to see if it works well in other areas. Once the template is built it will be evaluated and measured. An evaluation summary report will go back to every participating community. Then the final template will be built and it will be marketed to other provinces across the country and then nationally. We believe that Rural Communities are relevant in the 21st century and that Community success always boils down to leadership. Community Leadership Capacity is the key, said Hill in a press release. Community Leadership Capacity is leadership excellence of both formal and informal leaders within all sectors, silos, and corners of a community. We are excited to have Strathmore and Wheatland County as a Lighthouse Community. They were selected because we believe the organizing committee and community will be a great example of what can happen when a community makes an all out commitment to develop informal leaders in the community. Hill will be spending a half-day in the community to help launch the program on October 8, 2013. Mr. Hills day will feature a series of both formal and informal activities to learn more about the program, partner associations and meet community members. Community members can register for free to the leadership development program by going to www.register.becomingacommunitybuilder.ca.

Potbelly pigs may soon be welcome in Strathmore

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Strathmore resident Trevor Dahl brought a request to town council to see an amendment made to the animal bylaw to allow potbelly pigs as house pets. Dahl has been a rescuer and owner of potbelly pigs for 10 years and a resident in the town of Strathmore for five years. He said in reading the bylaw it seemed more focused on animals best suited to agricultural land, and he agrees with not allowing people to raise sheep or goats next to his house. Dahl said his pig weighs about 30lbs and he has absolutely no desire to breed potbelly pigs at this time. He gave council a list of reasons about why he would like to see amendments made to the bylaw. They are extremely clean animals compared to what everyone seems to think and kind of the repertoire that they run with. There is next to no smell when you do have a pet pig living in your house or your back yard, said Dahl. There can be concern about toiletry habits; he said the pig itself, if given the option, would not go to the bathroom anywhere where it lives. If the pig is house trained it will do the same as a dog and ask to be let outside. As for noise, he said in his 10 years of having pet pigs he has had guests that didnt even realize he had a pet pig until the guest saw it. As for how they are being a house pet, theyre extremely affectionate, theyre social animals. Ours would lay in the living room floor and if he actually had the chance and was able to score over the dog hed be up on the couch, cuddling on the couch, said Dahl. He said a potbelly pig will greet you at the door the same as a dog would, and they love having their belly rubbed. I know in changing the bylaw there would be a fear of having an influx of potbelly pigs coming into the town. Ive researched everything that I have ever had as a pet long before I ever thought about getting it. As a responsible pet owner I have made sure all of my animals have vet care, said Dahl. Ill be the first one to admit I dont think everyone should have a potbelly pig, theyre not a normal pet, theyre not for everybody and if you want to have one I say get educated first. Theres dietary concerns, theres health concerns and theres knowledge you need to know before you think about getting this as a pet. Dahl said there are seven lineages of the potbelly pig. When they first became popular they were the true potbelly pig that only gained 55 to 75lbs, which was the average dog size, weight-wise. The bigger pigs came from cross breeding not being done properly. In the amendment there could be a limit to the size and breed of the pig to ensure there arent suddenly a number of 150 to 200lb pigs being abandoned. Dahl said there are two lineages genetically that could be specified that are considered the micro or mini potbelly pig which would be any pig under 85lbs. Councillor Pat Fule is concerned that if they open the door and dont specify the type, then people will end up with these large pigs that they dont know what to do with. He asked Christine Campbell, chairperson with the board of directors for Oops-a-Dazy Rescue, who was in attendance at the meeting, if there is a problem with abandoned potbelly pigs in Alberta. Campbell said there were a lot of problems in the beginning. One of those things was dietary: people would get their pig and feed it pig food which makes sense. But that food is designed for pigs of the large porcine type, which helps them grow and is not meant to be fed to potbelly pigs. We as an organization have done a lot of work to educate the public about pigs, said Campbell. We offer personalized coaching to anyone considering adoption of a pig to try to prevent those sorts of issues. What we do find now is the problems with abandonment are as a result of bylaws like this which are designed primarily as Trevor mentioned for the agricultural swine. Dahl said over the years he has noticed a decrease in the education about owning pet pigs. Theyre not an easy pet to take care of, if you want actual description on what its like to have a pet pig in your house you have to imagine having a three-year-old child in your house for 15 years, with the same intelligence level, said Dahl. They have to be entertained, they have to have toys and play and if their toy is dirty they wont play with it. The fencing needed in a yard for a potbelly pig would be the same as what someone would use for a dog, and not chicken wire. Rooting can become a concern if the pig is left alone for a long time outside with no toys or distractions, but even then it would be a minor concern. The Dahl family disposes of manure by either giving it to a farm out in Gleichen that uses fertilizers, or giving it to their friends with gardens. Council suggested that administration meet with Dahl and Campbell to create an amendment to the bylaw.

Enrollment is up across Golden Hills

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Golden Hills School Division (GHSD) is always working hard to ensure each and every new school year will be just as great, if not better, than the last. Across the division there are approximately 30 new staff members, which is due to retirements and positions that have come up. There has also been an increase of enrollment. With just a couple of exceptions in a couple of schools it looks like enrollment is above predictions almost everywhere. Were pretty excited, our enrollment is up overall in Golden Hills. So were pretty excited to welcome a lot of new kids into classrooms across out district, said Daverne. When GHSD had looked at the fact the Grade 1 students would move on to Grade 2 and so on, the numbers added up to a 2.5 per cent to three per cent decline in enrollment. Instead, the division actually had a one per cent increase which is quite a bit above their projection. Weve made a number of changes in the last few years. We want to be more responsive to parents, we want to have better and be enhancing our programming at the school level. More student focus, so I think a lot of that work that has been ongoing over the last few years I think were seeing some dividends from that, said Daverne about the possible reason for the increase. In previous years GHSD schools had participated in the Alberta Initiative for School Improvement (AISI). The government is no longer funding it but Daverne said GHSD is still moving forward with system improvements. What started with AISI on a provincial landscape is still very much a focus for us within Golden Hills at all of our schools so we want to continue the work that we started, said Daverne. Since AISI first started, it has morphed and changed over the years. At GHSD the focus they have had for the past number of years has been on learning, the collaborative connected creative approach to teaching the students so they have those skills to be very successful in the world. The division will also continue to use outcomesbased assessments for report cards. Were not where we want to be yet with that but we want to continue to work with our teachers staff and our parents until we have a final product that everyone feels good about, said Daverne. There has been good feedback about outcomesbased assessment in the past. but this new report card program also has some challenges with it that GHSD is working on. Back in the day you showed up to class, had to memorize what the teacher gave you and then fill out the answers on a test. That is not the kind of employee that people want these days. Daverne said employers are looking for creative people, problem solvers that can collaborate with others. The old system of me memorize and knowing basically what youre going to ask me before I get to the test, thats all gone. Now we need a system where we are teaching kids and assessing them on their ability to collaborate and to problem solve and to think creatively and to be able to connect with others and to be able to use technology in creative ways, said Daverne. Thats the new way of teaching and we have spent a huge amount of time changing instruction so we do a better job of those things. Its reflected in our achievement results as well, our results have gone up, every year virtually for the past decade. So were seeing very good results within our students, but it means that we need to assess them differently now too. Telling kids or their parents that they are doing pretty good and Ill give you a 65 just doesnt work anymore. People want to know why they are doing good or bad and how they can work on continuing to improve upon those skills. We give specific feedback on specific learner outcomes and parents prefer it because its more information. We still have other things that we say too, but a letter grade is less important than that information, said Daverne. Earlier this year the Alberta government announced the approval of funding for the new East Wheatland K-12 School. An application has been filed with the county for re-designation of 12 acres of land southeast of the intersection of highways 561 and 840. In the meantime, in Three Hills GHSD is working on doing a lot of pre-work before getting into design and modernization of the Prairie Christian Academy facility and turning it into K-12.

Pass the Salt

Spiritual identity theft Spiritual identity theft occurs when someone tries to rob you of who you are in Christ. there is a thief, Satan, who works night and day trying to rob Christians of their identity in Christ. So, how does the devil steal our identity in Christ? 1. One way is by pointing out our past. for some he will zero in on what would seem to be defining moments major blunders, failed marriages, dishonorable acts, regrettable decisions. he will try to use abuse, rejection, whatever he can find in your past as a basis for his definition. dont let Satan define you by your past failures. let God define you by your current relationship with him. 2. another way that Satan is stealing our identity in Christ is by reminding us that we are not leaving up to the standards in the present. Satan will use our current struggles to define us. you dont pray enough. you could be a better wife or husband or father or mother, etc. he comes and tries to discourage us by saying that we are not living up to the standards, so why bother at all. 3. the third way Satan is stealing our identity in Christ is by discouraging us in the things that expect us in the future. Because we failed in the past and in the present, Satan is trying to tell us that we have no future; we have no hope. But dont listen to him. God tells us in his word in Jeremiah 29:11 that his plans for us is to give us a future and a hope. So, the question is: do you know your spiritual identity? has the devil tried to rob you of your identity in Christ? listen to your identity according to the word of God: 2 Corinthians 5:17: therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. When you came to Jesus and invited him to come into your life, you became a new creation! the person you used to be is gone! you may be in the same body, but you are brand new creation, a child of God. So the next time Satan tries to steel your identity by reminding you of your past and present failures, just remind him of his future! Schools are ready for the new year

Wendi Tashlikowich Times Contributor School is back in full swing and teachers, students and parents alike are excited about the upcoming 20132014 school year. Here is what the new year holds for Strathmores elementary schools. Trinity Lutheran Christian Academy (To provide a learning environment that challenges each student to fulfill the potential of all God-given abilities in service to God and community.) Trinity is very excited with their increased enrollment this year. The school has seen tremendous growth in the past two years. The school now has two pre-kindergarten classes with 12 students enrolled in each class, which is huge compared to their one class of 10 students last year. Mr. Funk is proud to announce the addition of his newly appointed associate, Principal Kristen Odegard. It is nice to be able to have a full time administrator responsible strictly for Trinity Lutheran, said Funk. With the growth the school was also able to bring in a new Kindergarten teacher, Trisha Hincks. Administrators at the school hope they will continue working towards growth of the school in order to minimize the amount of split grades that are incorporated into the K-9 Christian School. Westmount Elementary School (Working together, the staff at Westmount School, helps students to be the best they can be, both inside and outside school. We encourage ownership, responsibility, and we inspire our students to reach their full potential as successful life-long learners.) Westmount Elementary is starting the new school year off with a newly finished $250,000 playground. The school has fundraised for the last two and a half years and has received some very generous donations as well as a matching government grant. The new playground has had great effect on the entire community; everyone wants to come play on the awesome new equipment at Westmount. A few positive changes have occurred in both the Grade 5/6-hockey program as well as the fine arts program. Dan MacDonald (Bisons coach) will be on the ice with the students this year. This is a great new addition to the program, as they were able to break up the students into grades this year enabling both levels to have two segregated ice times a week. This will give the coaches better ability to focus on the different skill levels within smaller groups. A new dimension within the fine arts department is being implemented this year. Instead of a K-6 music specialty program, the focus will now be on drama for the Grade 5-6 students. The younger grades will be specializing in music. Principal Funk wishes for his students to, work hard, and when the opportunities arise to play hard, life is supposed to be fun, so I hope you have fun in a learning environment. Brentwood Elementary School (Preparing children for the future. Every day, every child, a success.) Brentwood Elementary is sailing into the new school year with some fresh ideas. We are very excited to be introducing a new program called 1 Book 1 School this year, said Principal Laurie Huntley. This program will enable the school to focus on reading as a small school community. Students will receive one book to take home and read with their family. Every student, teacher and administrator will be reading the same book at the same pace. For those who need help, they are going to be able to come in at lunchtime to catch up on their reading with guest readers. The school will design fun and educational activities that will be solely based on this story. Once the students have finished the book, they will all be participating in a schoolwide fundraising event, which will also focus around the values that the book has taught. The Fine Arts department is getting a face-lift with the introduction of hiphop and clay workshops for all grades. The Grade 5/6 students will now have the option to participate in a drama club. All grades will also be participating in the continuation of the Healthy Active Living Run club. Principal Huntley hopes that her students will, have a great learning environment with an emphasis on Fine Arts and Healthy Living, because this combination is extremely important to the success of our students. Sacred Heart Academy (Precious in His Sight) With the new school year at Sacred Heart Academy come new goals, new friends and renewed faith. The school as a community is excited to move towards the building of their new playground. A final fundraiser will be held on Thursday, Sept. 26 and the entire community of Strathmore is invited to come out and share in a movie under the stars. This is the second time SHA has held this type of event, and organizers hope come rain or shine they will have great town support. Each class will be continuing on with their good works projects, which include little flower students praying and singing for seniors and the fostering of two children in need. The school is excited to introduce their newest family member, Mr. Dustin Moreau, who will be teaching physical education. The school and parent council is taking a new spin on Kids Convention. They are redefining the workshop to focus more on Healthy Living and Lifestyle. The students will take part in mini workshops that focus on nutrition, exercise and many other topics. Principal Paulette Chotowetz prays that teachers and students, hope and pray for each other and sees the uniqueness, giftedness and preciousness of each and every individual. Wheatland Elementary (Lead with Confidence. Learn without limits and love who you are.) Wheatland Elementary School has redefined their mission statement this year to follow more closely to the teachings of Stephen Conveys 7 habits for discovering the Leader in Me The teachers at Wheatland have all been trained to instill what they feel are the 7 most important habits towards highly effective learning. Under this new format the student leadership programs will be expanding and growing. The school is very excited about the up and coming athletic curriculum, which includes volleyball, basketball, floor hockey and track and field. The school has decided on Wagon Wheels West as their school musical and will be starting preparation for this after Christmas. Principal Lane is excited to begin a new school year with definite focus on learning, leadership, confidence that have no limits. As the school year continues we at the Strathmore Times look forward to seeing all of the projects and events each and every school is involved in.

The Strathmore Anglican Church donated the newest Upcycling project to Hope Bridges. They are taking an old church pew and will be turning it into a masterpiece that the entire community can enjoy. The group met on Thursday, Sept. 5 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. to get started on this exciting project.

Kids and drugs prevention workshops

Harleys roar through the county

Despite the gloomy the eighth annual Harleys and Hotrods Charity Run weather the ride went on as scheduled on Sept. 7. Approximately 100 riders took part in the poker run that started in Strathmore and made stops in Carseland, Gleichen, Standard and Rockyford. At the end of the run everyone gathered for dinner, smoke shows, a bikini bike wash and a concert by Puttin on the Foil. Money raised is donated to the Childrens Wish Foundation, and this year the run is planning on saving a portion of the earning to donate to a local charity as well. Organizers of the event want to thank all of the sponsors and everyone who participated in the ride.

In 2012 SWAT (Strathmore-Wheatland Addictions Team) brought a drug awareness and information session to the community. The drug overdose death of a Strathmore teen, and other drug related tragedies in Calgary, had sparked the idea for an information night. Crystal Wahl, a chairperson with SWAT, said the sessions were well attended and so the workshops are returning. Drugs and Kids: A Parents Guide to Prevention is a four-part workshop that will be held at McBride Career Group beginning on Oct. 9. There is no cost for the workshop. We know that parents are still the biggest influence in their kids life in terms of their decision to use drugs or not, but how does a parent have a positive influence, how do they impact their kids in a positive way? The four sessions, thats what theyre all about, said Wahl. All of the facilitators for the workshops are SWAT members that have had training to be able to host the workshops, or are RCMP members. The four workshops include the Power of Parents which outlines how parents are a major influence, how you can protect your children, what are the risks and how do you school a community; resources to keep your child drug and alcohol free. Modeling is important, but it isnt just modeling its also having the conversations, not assuming your kids are. Its about having the conversations around risks, said Wahl. Theres a lot of research out there that shows kids live up to your expectations about drugs and alcohol, like if you sort of think theyre going to use thats almost like an invitation to use because they kind of think, well if they think I am anyway. If you make it clear in conversation that you expect them not to use thats a big deterrent.
ONLY

Wahl said one part of the problem is most parents arent having the conversations and parents grossly underestimate the amount of kids doing drugs. Talking with Your Kids is another workshop being offered. So even if theyre willing how do you do it? How do you open the conversation, how do you start it, what kind of messages should you get across? said Wahl. Ask your kids about their friends doing drugs or drinking. Chances are if they arent doing it, they know someone who is. Talk to them about the risks and about their thoughts on the people they know that are using. Helping Your Child Make Good Decisions is a workshop that discusses how to raise your childs confidence levels, teaching them to say no, why they should, and methods on how they can do so. Its about setting good boundaries and rules and sticking to them. What Parents Need to know about Drugs will be taught by the RCMP. Its actually the one the parents like but its actually probably less important I would say than the others because you dont have to be educated about every drug, its more important that youre having open communication with your kids, said Wahl. This is the workshop that outlines what drugs are and what the signs and symptoms are, kind of heres the drug and heres what it does. While the program focuses on prevention of drug use, its something Wahl thinks could benefit all parents. I would also say it would be good for any parent because if its communication skills and boundaries and stuff it wouldnt have to be about drugs, thats just basic parenting skills there, said Wahl. The four-part workshops begin on Oct. 9 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The following workshops will be Oct. 23, Nov. 6 and Nov. 20. They will all be held at McBride Career Group located at suite 104-227 Third Ave.

Volunteers (and participants) needed

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Strathmore is entering its ninth year in support of the Canadian Cancer Societys Relay for Life initiative. Forty communities in the Alberta and Northwest Territories division are participating in the 12-hour relay towards the leading cause of death in Canada; to date, Strathmore has raised over $1.4 Million from this event. Its very inspiring and brings people together, throughout Canada, to celebrate cancer survivors; were also remembering loved ones that have been lost to the disease, and fighting against cancer, said Staff Partner Dayna Hyman. Strathmore this year has a fundraising goal of $56,000. Though usually a night-time race, Relay for Life has changed to a more kid-friendly event; families are invited to join in from 12 Noon to 12 Midnight at the Ag Grounds on Sept. 21. If yourenot up to the challenge of a 12-hour relay, Hyman encourages families to come out and support the Society with the festival taking place at the grounds; bouncy castles, a petting zoo, face painting, head shaves, and live bands will be there for entertainment and the $10 admittance fee goes straight to the cause. All fundraising goes towards cancer research, support programs, advocacy, cancer prevention initiatives, and services for those living with the disease. Hyman says that its important to celebrate, remember, and fight as a community. Thats what were doing here with our relay, she said. Were raising money to go to our mission to eradicate cancer. Anyone looking to volunteer and/ or participant can contact Dayna Hyman at 403-541-5369 or visit cancer.ca. Registration begins at 10 a.m. on Sept. 21, with a Survivor Breakfast at Hope Church at 10 a.m. as well.

Perizzolo new Athletics Director

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter In his fourth year at Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC), Darren Perizzolo is the new Athletics Director, following the departure of Michael Annicchiarico. I think Michael did a really good job of getting students involved in athletics, Perizzolo said. He kind of set a little bit of a precedent in terms of what we expect out of our athletes. Thats something I definitely hope to continue with. With a degree in kinesiology and another in physical education, the title of Athletics Director is something Perizzolo considered would come one day. It was always something that I thought I would end up doing eventually, he said. But so soon in my career, to be teaching all Phys Ed and athletic director, is kind oflike the Holy Grail almost. Its good, its enjoyable to come to work everyday and do that. Perizzolo is now responsible for overseeing all athletics; making sure teams have coaches, providing opportunities to as many student athletes as possible, and ensuring that coaches (and students) recognize the athletic philosophy and what to expect once they enter school sports. We are a Catholic school, so we expect our athletics program to run as such, he said. Obviously we expect a certain moral character out of our athletes. Perizzolo said that this character is not needed right away necessarily, but students must be willing to learn it throughout the season. We really stress and focus the development of student athletes rather than the banners on the wall, he said. We still are a fairly young school, and theyre starting to accumulate, but I think thats something that Michael had started, and I think thats something we need to continue with; the focus on the development of the skills necessary in terms of physical, but also our psychological and cooperation skills our students learn while playing sports. Meetings have already begun with coaches and staff for the years sports teams. Were fortunate to have a very athletically-inclined staff here at the school, with a few teachers who have played postsecondary sports, Perizzolo said. Were really blessed in that regard in that theres such a talented group of teachers here who are willing to volunteer their time. Perizzolo himself coaches the senior girls volleyball team, and will assist with track later on in the season. Last year was the first time an HCC had went to provincials with boys basketball. Perizzolo hopes to do that this year with his girls, especially since our zone has the wildcard birth for the province. We should have a good season for our senior boys and senior girls teams. Theyre looking pretty strong, he said. Tons of athletes in junior high too, so the volleyball teams are looking really promising. Perizzolos senior girls have their home opener on Sept. 25.

The White rookies shut out the Red rookies on Sept. 8 by a score of 8-0. Coach MacDonald said this was due to the Red team having more 15-year-olds in the lineup. The Bisons next tournament is at home from Sept. 12-15.

Aryssah Stankevitsch Photos

White over Red

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Two-nothing after the first, 5-0 after the second, and 8-0 after the third, was not exactly the score that Coach Dan MacDonald wanted to see after the UFA Bisons Red and White Game. Team White dominated as Team Red team was filled with more of the younger 15-year-old rookie hopefuls. Wed like to see more of a tight game, thats for sure, said MacDonald. But you just dont know how hard the kids are going to work, and how hard theyre going to play. Its good to see. All players on both teams were rookies, looking to earn their first spot on the Bisons, but the bigger, older players on Team White had the sure advantage. We wanted to see how they would stack up against the tougher competition, because for them, to stay with us, they have to be stronger and cut the mustard, you might say, MacDonald said. Otherwise they have to go back to where they can develop better. On the Team White side, Troy Van Tetering, Chad Harrison, and Robbie McLean lead the offense, impressing their potential coach. They were just driving the net better, and thats what were looking for you always want guys who drive to the net to score, said MacDonald. When you start the season, we always look at fundamentals to start with. Driving the net is one of those fundamentals. They have to be able to take the puck to the net, and create scoring chances. The Bisons are now narrowed down to 33 players, who will compete in a tournament against other league teams at home this weekend, Sept. 12-15. Wed like to see them play a couple games against their own age level, MacDonald said. Following a tournament the following weekend in Calgary, the team will be named on Sept. 23.

Girls & boys ages 5 - 14 are welcome to come have fun trying hockey. Please have a helmet, skates, stick & gloves.

SHS fall, peewee prevails

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Strathmore High School (SHS) Spartans football team traveled to Drumheller on Sept. 6, while the peewee Spartans faced off against Innisfail at McMahon Stadium the following day. It was the first game of the season for both teams; SHS were shut out 68-0, but the peewees gave the Innisfail Cyclones a similar punishment of 41-0. The scoreboard wasnt very nice, said Carl Seafoot, head coach of SHS. Weve been struggling for players since we started up so were just finally getting enough players to be able to do even one side scrimmaging. Seafoot would ideally want 35 players for his team; 20 competed in Drumheller. Some of them had only been around for a week, Seafoot said. We were nowhere prepared as much as Drumheller, and I know they started up earlier this year. Theyve been working for a while. Experience is lacking for SHS; roughly half of the team are in their rookie year. We just gotta get some execution going, Seafoot said. We went to Drum, we took a kick in there, but overall as the game progressed, you saw people catching on to what they were supposed to be doing. Seafoot said that its not only offense that was lacking, but the teams defense as well.
For their final team tryout on Sept. 4, Coach Goldsmith and Coach McDonnell selected roughly 17 girls for Strathmore Highs girls soccer team. The teams first game will be at home on Sept. 19 against Foothills.

Both sides were hurting, offence wasnt executing, we werent gaining any yards, he said. We had a few good plays that worked, but we were hit and miss; defense was much the same. At the end of the game, his team was looking forward and still in good spirits despite the very onesided loss. With practices this week, well be able to fine tune some things and be able to put a better effort on the field, Seafoot said; the SHS Spartans face Medicine Hat High School (MHHS) at home this Saturday, Sept. 14. Chuck Holloways peewees had a much stronger start to the year. The game went really good, he said. They passed well, and the line blocked well. They prevented the rush from getting to my quarterback. Holloway noted that Zach Palardy had a very successful game at centre, and he hopes for him to continue that streak against Lacombe at home on Sept. 14. Overall, I think the series is tied, but last year Lacombe beat us twice, Holloway said. Last year at this time we didnt have a strong line. So hopefully our line, the way it is, is better. Last season, the Lacombe Explosion won the Tier 3 Provincial Championship against the Red Deer Stealers. Theyre looking pretty strong this year as well, Holloway said.

Young stars, higher hopes

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Strathmore High School (SHS) girls soccer team made their final cuts on Sept. 4, and are hoping for a more successful season than 2012, where they were winless through five games. It was a building year, for sure. We had some players that had never played sports before, never mind soccer, said Coach Roz Goldsmith, who is coaching again this year with Kaitrin McDonnell. We did a lot of basic work. Five players on the team have competed since Grade 10; roughly 17 girls were at the final tryout, and Goldsmith hoped for the team numbers to stay in that range. If we can keep it high, well keep it high, but it depends on the commitment levels of the girls, she said. The team is competing with volleyball for students interest. We have some good Grade 11s and Grade 12s who I think put the word out, because they really wanted to play again, and just getting out there with some social media. The team posted messages on the schools website and Facebook page to encourage more girls to bring their best to tryouts. We hadnt had a team for a couple years, the interest had kind of died down, Goldsmith said. So this year is an improvement, hopefully we can compete a little bit better. McDonnell, who has a soccer background, will be working on passing and conditioning before the teams first game on Sept. 19. Positioning will be huge, and a little bit more of team building so they get a little more familiar with each other. We have a lot of young players, which is a really big bonus, so were hoping that we can improve quite a bit this year, Goldsmith said. Our Grade 10s, we have quite a few who have played before, so were hoping that positioning doesnt take up a lot of time but positioning and endurance is what were really working on. Come cheer on the Spartans on Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. against Foothills at SHS.

Bike for a wild life

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The National Bike for Wildlife Program is meant to connect youth to the outdoors, encourage an active lifestyle, and raise awareness for the Canadian Wildlife Federations (CWF) conservation programs for endangered species such as grizzly bears and bighorn sheep. From Aug. 14 to Oct. 29, Angella Goran will be cycling roughly 6,800 km from Victoria to Halifax, stopping at schools, camps, and community events to share CWFs message. I think its so important for that next generation, and even us, to start to realize: What is life? What is living? I really respect that the Canadian Wildlife Federation has this really cool grasp on the outdoors as a natural playground, said Goran. All the resources are there for us, especially in Canada, to go out and explore and have fun. When she was growing up, Goran always wanted to stay outside and play; nowadays, parents sit their children in front of the TV or hand them an iPad. Its a cycle, said Goran. Is that really what you want? I look at that, with all the health concerns, whether it be childhood obesity or late onset diabetes, whether it be the mental issues and the suicide rates. She says that connecting youth with outside and nature lowers all those concerns. Theres proven statistics that (say) that getting outside and having fun and enjoying that especially as a family encourages lifestyle changes and in Canada, theres no better playground, she said. I cant even explain what I just saw from Victoria all the way to Calgary. Goran owns SokJok, a sponsor of the ride, which runs youth programs in Ottawa. Seeing what CWF did with children, she was inspired to pair with them. I saw the message of what they wanted to build their brand to be, she said. When I started to realize what the Canadian Wildlife Federation does in Canada, hands down, I was like, I need to get involved. As part of the National Womens Rowing Team for the 2004 Olympics, Goran sustained an injury, and then became addicted to cycling. She was part of the National Womens Development Team for Velodrome Cycling, has competed in Ironman Triathlon, and raced for Canadas Long Distance Triathlon Team. She coaches at and owns her cycling studio, Cyclepathic, in Ottawa as well. As I started to get to know CWF as a team, I had a good chance to sit down with the CEO, Goran said. I said to him, how can my company do more connecting in Canada for you? She threw out the idea of a bike ride to do something different, as everyone does runs and walks. He asked her to be the cyclist, and she gladly accepted it had been on her bucket-list to complete since she was little. The project has been over a year in the making, with plenty of planning, fundraising and outreach for sponsors. Over $10,000 worth of prizes are available for families on the website. I think that the hardest part is, its one thing to do the ride and go out everyday, but its the engagement and the social messaging, Goran said, who rides an average of 100 km per day. Youre trying to eat, youre trying to sleep; it doesnt give you a lot of time. Only one other person is onhand for support crew, while the rest are working from their offices. Meeting all the people, while camping out, has been the best part, she says: I think every single community weve been into, its just, fantastic to meet people who are doing great things. As she pulled into Alberta earlier this month, she mentioned that all the parks they stayed at in British Columbia were full; it seems that CWFs message may be getting across after all. Canadas a really special place, and were really fortunate to have such an awesome country. I think when you think about all the organizations who are doing really good things, Im really honoured to be doing this for the Canadian Wildlife Federation, Goran said. CWF and Goran hope to have raised $25,000 by the end of their ride; theyve passed $10,000 after just one province. To support them, go to bikeforwildlife.ca and click on the donate button, sign up for a school pledge program, or text wildlife to 45678 for a $10 donation. High as well; the team will be finalized by Sept. 23, at which point all players will start at the school.

Dick had farming in his blood; he began as a young man farming with his brothers and never really stopped. His last venture forth was a drive through the countryside; doing what he loved checking crops and making sure his sons were getting harvest underway. In 1978 Dick & Esther moved into town when he then began his second round of farming as a crop adjuster for AFSC. He met many people and made many more friends along the way. When he retired from AFSC he continued to sell hail insurance well into his early 80s. Dick was a Charter member of the Knights of Columbus, Monsignor Killen Council #3004 as well as a 4th Degree Knight of the Father Doucette Assembly #006. He was a life-long supporter of the Rockyford community and St Ritas parish. Some of his favorite pastimes were: camping, travelling, curling, golfing, buying 50/50 tickets at the arena while watching his grandchildren (and the Cook girls) then great grandchildren play ringette and the odd game of hockey. He always enjoyed a good story and a hearty laugh. A prayer service will be held on Monday, September 9, 2013 at St. Ritas Parish (Rockyford) at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at St. Ritas Parish (Rockyford) at 11:00 a.m. The family has requested in lieu of flowers donations may be made directly to the White Rose Program at the Foothills Hospital (c/o Calgary Stroke Program, Greatest Needs, Foothills Medical Centre Site Office, AC136 Special Services Building, 1403 29th Street N.W., Calgary, T2N 2T9 or by email at fundraising@calgaryhealthtrust. ca). SHS wants volleyball zones

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Last year, Strathmore Highs girls were knocked out in zones quarterfinals, while the boys failed to win a game at the same level. Eleven ladies have been named to the varsity team. The girls side has only five veteran players from last years squad two graduated, and three chose not to return. It was a bit of a disappointment because we worked with them, and last year they were all Grade 11s, so it was really a bit of a learning experience, said Coach Randy Moncks. Most of them were on the JV (Junior Varsity) team the year before, and then when they come to me, its a different learning curve. For this year the team is made up of four Grade 12s, six Grade 11s, and one Grade 10; the latter will be used as a backup setter to all-star Erika Myhre. Shes been provincial team setter, and shes already been recruited by the University of Calgary, Moncks said. The team finished fourth in the Foothills division in 2012, but Moncks is hoping for more success this time around. Im hoping to get into the league final for sure, and the zones, surrounding the rest of them with

During his life he greatly enjoyed boating, water skiing, snow skiing and watching hockey. He is survived by his mother Edna; brothers Darwin (Sharon), and Terry; nieces Trisha Fuller (Stacy), and Krista Johnsgaard; great nieces Abbigale, Nola and Daphne Fuller; friend Cheryl; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Erika, were hoping she steps up and she leads us into a better position, Moncks said. Im hoping the Grade 11s who were Grade 10s can make a contribution and help us. Were still fairly young, were not that deep. Students who tried out but failed to make varsity were invited to try their hand at JV instead. We have a really solid JV program now, so were quite lucky to have that feed into our program, Moncks said. The girls hosted an eight-team exhibition tournament on Sept. 7, but have their first league game on Sept. 18. The Spartans boys have their first game the same day in Olds. On the final day of tryouts on Sept. 5, Coach Brandie Dundas

was still making cuts; the senior and junior team will overlap, finishing with 16 in the combined program. We have quite a few players who could play up and play down. So we always like to leave it open. If you work hard, you get to go up to senior, she said. In 2012, the boys finished with the JV league banner, and had much growth throughout the year. We have some strong 10s coming up and some awesomely strong grade 12s coming back, Dundas said. The team is almost split between the two grades. Id like to take the zone title for senior. JV, I feel like we probably have a chance at the league title again.
