_______________INTRODUCTION______________
Spain and South America! So beautiful and rich with varied cultures. And Latin America is so magical for the tourist from faraway. Both places are known for their warmth and hospitality. In these countries the locals have little knowledge of the English language, so tourists need to be able to ask questions and express themselves in Spanish, albeit imperfectly, when walking along the streets and markets. This is essential for maximum exploitation and enjoyment of your time in these countries. This book provides you with the ability to express yourself exibly, according to your needs, even if you have never learned Spanish. In this book you will nd lots of common questions and short answers to all questions of information. You can build sentences with dierent word combinations from daily life. You will also nd verb conjugation tables that will enable you to speak freely in the past, present, and future tenses, with approximately 100 useful verbs; and also be able to build short sentences of your choice with them. For example: We feel... very good excellent I felt... warm that I am Nos sentimos... muy bien excelente Sent... calor que estoy
11

INTRODUCTION

______________VERBS_______________ INTRODUCTION TO VERBS

In Spanish, as in other European languages, there are 3 principal tenses: past, present and future, and additional verb forms. Verbs are divided into three groups. They can be identied by the ending of the original verb: rst conjugation group ending with -ar, for example: hablar / to talk second conjugation group ending with er, for example: comer / to eat third conjugation group ending with ir, for example: vivir / to live Every ending changes according to gender, number and tense of the verb. (See tables in following pages).

IMPERATIVE
The imperative changes from single to plural and it is the same for male and female. For example, Talk! Habla!, Hablen! Reective verbs, when an action is applied to the action performer. The reexive pronouns come before the verb except in the imperative and innitive forms. In these cases we put them after the verb, forming a single word. For example: to dress vestirse to dress myself to get dressed vestirme I dress myself. Me visto. Dress yourself. Vstete.
65

As the end of the verb denes the person, it is possible to omit the pronoun. For example: t te vistes can be said te vistes.

66

INTRODUCTION TO VERBS

REFLEXIVE VERBS
Reexive verbs have the sux se that is added to the innitive form. For example: to clean lavar; to clean oneself lavarse or: to dress vestir; to dress oneself vestirse. In reexive verbs the base form of the verb is usually used. For example: She is going to dress herselfElla va a vestirse In Spanish there is another group of verbs that uses the reexive verb form. When a certain object produces a certain eect or feeling or preference on one person: I like it me gusta eso it hurts me me duele I am interested in youMe interesas t. Etc.
THE VERB TO BE SER AND ESTAR.

In Spanish there are two dierent verbs for the verb to be: Ser and estar. They are used in dierent situations. Uses of the verb ser: (see page 81) * we use the verb ser, when there is a noun after the verb: this is an exam es un examen * we use the verb ser together with an adjective to denote a situation or an existing quality as ownership, origin or quality. I am Israeli Yo soy Israel The house is owned by EliLa casa es de Eli The cake is a chocolate cakeEl pastel es de chocolate
67

INTRODUCTION TO VERBS

She is prettyElla es bonita * to indicate time and date: Tomorrow is Friday Maana es Viernes * as the answer to questions like: who, what, where from, and to indicate place and event The uses of the verb estar (see page 79). * to describe presence in a place or in a certain situation. The dog is in the garden El perro est en el jardn * together with an adjective to indicate a temporal quality or situation. The child is sick (now)El nio est enfermo How are you? Cmo estn ustedes? Here, as in other similar cases, the verb form indicates the person's name. Then the person's name can be omitted. * estar is used together with the gerund as in English, the verb to be comes before the "-ing" form. We are learning a lot Estamos aprendiendo mucho * with certain adjectives both verbs can be used.
