WATERPROOFING

AND

DAMP-PROOFING

FOR

Immediately before waterproofing is laid the surface to be waterproofed shall be clean and dry. No vehicle of any type shall be permitted to travel on bituminous sheeting or any other membrane for which a protective layer is specified unless engaged in laying the protective layer and then only with the permission of the Engineer. The surfaces of any gullies and other features with which the waterproofing will be in contact shall be clean and painted with bitumen as specified in Clause 2005. Damp-proofing shall be applied to concrete surfaces which will be in contact with earth at abutments and wingwalls of bridges, walls of vehicular and pedestrian box culverts and retaining walls. It shall consist of two coats of asphalt (prime coat) and one coat of asphalt seal (seal coat).

WATERPROOFING WITH PREFABRICATED BITUMINOUS SHEETING 1. Concrete surfaces shall be thoroughly sealed with one coat of primer. When the solvent constituent of the primer has completely evaporated, a continuous layer of hot bitumen compound shall be applied and the sheeting shall be bedded on it. The sheeting shall be laid so that no air is trapped between it and the concrete surface or between successive layers of sheeting. Joints between sheets shall be lapped with end laps of at least 150mm and side laps of at least 100mm. The joints shall be arranged so that at no joint are there more than 3 thickness of sheeting and, as far as possible, so that water will drain away from the exposed edge.

2003

WITH RUBBERISED FILLED BITUMEN 1. Rubberised filled bitumen shall be laid at a temperature of about 180C by means of squeegees. It shall be heated to no more than 200 C at any stage nor kept at a temperature above 170C for more than 4 hours. Reheating of the material after setting will not be permitted. No traffic shall be allowed on rubberised filled bitumen until the surfacing has been laid.

2004

PROTECTIVE LAYERS TO WATERPROOFING MEMBRANES 1. The protective layer to waterproofing membranes shall be laid and compacted without damage to the waterproofing membranes.

2005

WATERPROOFING WITH BITUMEN 1. Surfaces to be waterproofed with Bitumen shall receive 2 coats of cut-back bitumen complying with B.S. 3690 having a viscosity grade within the range 25 - 50 seconds (standard tar viscometer) with a coverage of 1.8m/litre. Prior to the application of bituminous paint, surfaces to which it is to be applied shall be clean and dry. The first coat shall be allowed to dry before the second coat is applied.

2.

2006

PROPRIETARY WATERPROOFING MATERIALS 1. Where proprietary waterproofing materials are specified, they shall be laid fully in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

2007

DAMP-PROOFING 1. Containers of asphaltic damp-proofing material shall be kept closed when not in use. Damp-proofing shall not be applied until all provisions for curing of concrete and repairing of defective concrete surfaces have been complied with. All concrete surfaces shall be reasonably smooth and free from projections and holes. The concrete surfaces shall be dry. Immediately before the application of damp-proofing the surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned of dust and loose materials. When necessary, the Engineer will require the surfaces to be scrubbed with water and a stiff brush, after which all surfaces shall be allowed to become thoroughly dry before the application of damp-proofing materials. Care shall be taken to confine all asphalt to the areas to be covered, and special care shall be taken to prevent disfigurement of any other parts of the structure by dropping or spreading of the materials. The cured, cleaned and dry surfaces shall be painted as follows : i. Prime coats Paint with two coats of asphalt. The materials may be either brushed or sprayed on. The amount of each coat shall be not less than one litre per 2m of surface. Successive coats shall not be applied until the preceding coat has thoroughly dried. ii. Seal Coats After the second prime coat has thoroughly dried, one coat of seal shall be applied by brush only. This coating shall consist of at least 1 litre per 2m of surface. When necessary, this material may be heated, but not in excess of 65C.
