Welcome

Welcome
to Idea Store Learning
In this Olympic year Idea Store Learning has once again raised the bar and is providing an even wider range of better value courses through which you can improve your skills, help your family or make your contribution to our community. I am committed to keeping learning affordable for everyone. I have reduced our standard fee to 2.00 per hour and offer concessions on this for those most in need; we continue to support learners studying English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) fully. Those with particular learning needs receive a range of support to enable them to study successfully with us. Our tutors are experts in their fields and will give you the best learning experience. Inspiring and passionate, many of them continue to work in their occupations and so will provide you with the most current knowledge and skills. As you browse through this guide, you will see that we have continued to develop the range of our courses to include community interpreting, family learning classes and ESOL. You can also study for qualifications that enable you to get a job or develop your skills. Student satisfaction with our service is outstanding. Almost all learners judge their experience with us to be an excellent one. I urge you to join them in developing your skills, learning for work or just taking part in our learning community. Staff in centres will welcome you warmly and help support you to be successful. Should you need it, specialist advice and guidance is available. Whether you are studying for a day or a year, in the daytime or evening, as a valued member of our community, I would once again personally like to thank you for choosing Idea Store Learning.

Excellent satisfaction with classes

Every year we ask for feedback from our learners in surveys and learner satisfaction is very high. Last year learners said that they were made to feel welcome, they would recommend their courses and that they felt safe. Achievement levels are high and learners are very satisfied with the way they were taught, the group of people they met and the challenges learning placed on them. Learners told us that their skills improved, their personal safety was treated as a high priority and that they learned what they wanted to learn. In all of the categories we asked learners about, over 90% of responses said that the experience of learners was good or excellent.

Billie Joe Oakley joined the Family Maths course at Cubitt Town Primary school run by Idea Store Learning. She is 24 and currently unemployed. She was nervous about coming to the course as it had been some time since she had done anything like this. After a couple of lessons she felt more confident and became aware that her ability was higher than she thought. She recently passed her mock exam and is really confident abut passing her Maths exam. She has now applied for a Mortgage Advisor Apprenticeship. I have thoroughly enjoyed the course and would definitely suggest it to others. I think that the work I have done will help me get to where I want to go.

Class sizes are carefully managed to make sure you get the right amount of support and attention from your teacher. You will be in a group of people who are at the same level as you and when your class ends we will tell you what you can do next. You will get the chance to get a qualification if that is what you want.

Lluvia came to the UK in 2007 due to her husbands work, and was determined to learn English to become part of her local community. She joined an ESOL class at Idea Store Learning and quickly improved so that she could understand her childrens education and teachers, make new friends and learn about the customs and traditions of her new home. Lluvia encouraged her classmates to practise English outside the classroom, and she has now progressed onto higher levels. Not content with learning herself, Lluvia now also volunteers in two lower level ESOL classes, helping others on a one-to-one basis. She says: The English language has allowed me to be close to the community and socialise with its people. It has given me the opportunity not to be isolated by a language barrier. Lluvia is also the 2012 winner of the London region NIACE Adult Learners Week Learning through ESOL Award.

When Esther came to the UK she really wanted to get a job in Logistics as she had had a successful career in this field prior to coming to the UK. Unfortunately her lack of English language skills held her back from achieving this goal. Esther joined the Cambridge First Certificate Course at Idea Store Learning in September 2011 to improve her accuracy and develop the confidence with her written and spoken English in order to gain both a qualification and a job. The evening study at Canary Wharf enabled Esther to fit the course around her job search. Esther gained the confidence to apply for jobs in the field that she used to work in and she has now gained employment with a London based logistics company. Im really glad with my progress. I came to London to improve my English and to find work in my profession. Now I have a job in Logistics, I can go alone to the bank, go shopping and go to the supermarket. I can speak over the telephone and Im over the moon with that.

Tracy Clemens
Book-Keeping Student

Mother-of-three Tracy Clemens was filing some tax returns last year when she started to realise a lack of knowledge about taxation, book-keeping and accounts was holding her back in life. I was filling out the forms and found for instance we could have claimed for my husbands uniform, says Tracy, 38. I got quite upset that I was so ignorant about the subject and decided there and then to go back to school. Tracy enrolled on a course to learn book-keeping and having just achieved a Diploma is now taking exams in accountancy.

Idea Store Learning Community Development Team

At Idea Store Learning we know the importance of working with partners to engage with local residents and community groups. We have a dedicated Community Development Team who will be glad to discuss our courses and any projects you may want to run.
There are a number of ways that we can provide exciting learning opportunities to your community, such as: R aising awareness of the wide variety of courses we have on offer T ailor-made training for your staff, residents or community A ttending local community events B espoke enrolment arrangements for larger groups Consultation on the types of courses you would like to see Idea Store Learning offer S pecialised training for learners with low levels of literacy and English or those with Learning Difficulties and Disabilities Our experienced and friendly staff would be glad to visit you to speak about Idea Store Learning. Learning in the Community The Idea Stores act as bridges into the community for our learning services. However we always feel that there is more that we can do to ensure the most vulnerable and hard to reach groups in the borough are able to access high quality learning opportunities which are relevant to them. In order to ensure those groups needs are met we work with a range of partners to deliver our services. This year we have worked with a wide range of partners including Community Centres, Employers, Housing Associations, Schools and Childrens Centres to deliver learning in outreach venues. We work with external partners in a range of ways. Partners can: c ommission bespoke courses for your service users commission an existing programme for your service users provide a venue for a course commission a taster session in something new for your users send a group of your learners onto one of our programmes If you are interested in working with us or commissioning a course for your service users, please email any member of the team listed below and we can talk to you about your users, needs and how we can help you meet them. Commissioning a taster course could cost as little as 150 but could mean big returns for your service users.

Feedback from our Partners

Our schools value the service of the Idea Store Learning Community Development Team and their commitment. We have been working with Idea Store Learning since 2008 and each year they have supported our families with fantastic opportunities of ESOL, Literacy, Maths , First Aid and ICT. This has enhanced our work with our mums, dads, carers, extended families and the Isle of Dogs schools parents/carers on many levels, some far outweighed our expectations. Jacqui Jenkins Parent Liaison Co-ordinator Cubitt Town Infants & Cubitt Town Junior Schools

The belly dancing session was absolutely smashing for my project Discover London. The parents really enjoyed themselves! It has boosted their confidence and self-esteem, and taught them how they can improve their flexibility and strength. Some of the parents werent really sure how it could really help them or if they could get up in front of each other to do the moves, but throughout the sessions they began to discover how enjoyable it was and the fact that those little movements can make a lot of difference! Overall it made a really good impact on them and they loved it from start to finish! The only one thing they werent happy with was the fact that it had to end!! Family Learning
All Parents want their children to do well at school and to succeed. However, many parents simply do not know where to start. We run family learning classes that give parents and children the opportunity to learn together with their children, as well as a chance to share ideas with other parents and develop their own skills.

After staying at home with her children for three years Lindas confidence was at an all time low. She wanted to return to work but not as a care assistant so enrolled onto ITQ Level 2 aiming to move into Administration. Her tutor, Lynn, has been her mentor throughout advising on her next steps. Linda passed her ITQ with Idea Store Learning and has now progressed onto an Access to Education Studies course with plans to go to University. She already has three offers of places. Lindas confidence is lifted and she now feels able to put her point across where before she would not speak up for herself. She is also volunteering at a primary school to get experience for her future career in education.

Prepare for Professional Dance Training

Do you want to pursue further professional dance training and looking to develop a dance related career? This might be the course for you. A one year dance programme which has been developed in partnership with Birkbeck, University of London. The programme is mainly centred on regular technique classes and creative workshops in Contemporary Dance and classical Ballet. It aims to prepare individuals wishing to audition and progress onto Professional Dance Training courses and in particular the Foundation Degree in Performance at Birkbeck, University of London. Based on their model of providing training twice a week in the evening; this course offers particularly good structured training for people in full time work. As well as two Ballet classes and two Contemporary dance classes a week, you will be given performance opportunities including a full staged production in the Brady Arts Centre Theatre at the end of the course. In addition the partnership with Birkbeck will also offer you a guaranteed audition and interview for Birkbecks Foundation Degree - please note we cannot guarantee that you will be offered a place - and several opportunities to find out about their programme. Entry Requirement: You should have some experience as a performer, who has received training in dance, and are presently capable of working at Improvers level (fundamental technical skills clearly understood and embodied) in Contemporary Dance and/or elementary level (Confident grasp of the basic movement vocabulary) in classical Ballet. To enrol on this course all interested participants must fill in an application form and attend an audition. To request an application form, please contact us at: ideastorelearning@towerhamlets.gov.uk For more information about the courses running at Birkbeck, University of London please visit: www.bbk.ac.uk

Black & White Darkroom Techniques

In September 2012 Tommy will be starting an MA in Photography and Urban Cultures at Goldsmiths College, after successfully completing a City and Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Photography at the Shadwell Centre in 2011. Tommy joined the photography course at Idea Store Learning with an ambition to change his career to become more involved with the Creative Arts Industry and as he said to develop his personal interest in photography on both a practical level and increase his creative abilities in how to see and read images. Tommy is currently working with the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, he considers himself lucky as his contract ends in September, just before he begins his studies. On completion of his MA his aim is to work with Galleries and on curation of photographic projects but will also be returning to Idea Store from time to time to refresh his photography skills by joining one of the many short programmes we offer.
