Lesson Plan

Level: Elementary Length: 90 minutes Topic: Weather

Objectives: Review: Simple Past Lexis: holiday activities (review), Weather Terms Skills: Listening Activity Review: Simple Past Description Students are asked to write a number of verbs on a sheet. Students work in pairs. The first student says one verb; then, the other uses it to make a sentence in the past tense. They continue until both lists have been completed. Note: Higher level classes can be asked to use the words to create a story. Review: Taboo: divide students into teams. One student from each team Holiday comes to the front of the class. The students are shown a flash Lexis card, or the word, and they describe it to the rest of the class. The first team to answer earns a point. Present Use the flashcards to present weather lexis. Lexis: Drill pronunciation as a group, and individually. Weather Its snowing. Put the phrases on the board (elicit spelling). Note: Put the phrases under headings of good / bad. Elicit the placement of the phrases from the students. Controlled Working in pairs, students complete Exercise 1 on the handout. Practice Open Feedback PreStudents will hear weather reports from five different cities. Listening Students work in pairs predicting which cities have had good or Prediction bad weather. Note: Only three cities are given in the chart in exercise 1: Congqing, Haerbin, and Shanghai. Students should only guess about those three. Note: They could place the cities on a cline, rather than in a list. Listening Students Listen to the weather reports and fill in the chart (exercise 1). Students check their answers with a partner. Open feedback. Listening Students listen again check their prediction task (cline). for gist Students discuss their answers / opinions with a partner. Open Feedback Presentation Elicit how to discuss the weather / (states) in the past. It was snowing yesterday. Drill Pronunciation / Use the flashcards to elicit target language. newspapers. They ask and answer questions about the weather in different cities. Open Feedback: Students ask / answer questions as a class Students work in groups and write a story about a holiday. The story can have a theme (The worst holiday of my life), or not. Students are given six flashcards from the following sets: weather / holiday / animals They write a short story using cards as a prompt. Note: Collect the stories and have the students edit each others work if time permits. All of the flashcards are put on the board. One group reads their story. Students from another group listen to the story. As the listen, the students should select the cards that are mentioned in the story, and place them in the right order on the board. Students keep a journal until the next class
