Optional Alumni Day Reflection Divya Karthikeyan The Alumni day lecture was a very insightful and helped get an idea on how take my career forward. May-a-times I have wondered how I am ever going to use all that I study at School in my day-to-day life. Having seen 5 live examples, I have some confidence that everything is going to make sense in life at some later point even if not now. A strong takeaway I have from that day was like re-emphasizing the famous words of Steve Jobs You cant connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. Each of the talks in 202 terms proved that every concept from 202 and the I school as a whole could be applied in real life. A short reflection from each of the talks: Mano - Google maps There is about 10s of peta bytes of data in maps, which is a big challenge for information organization. This concept forms the crux of our course and it was really interesting to hear how much of this is actually relevant in real life. Anne & Bailey - public archive Digital archiving is slowly gaining importance, as storing once used data could be useful for many purposes. Since digital data is more fragile the preservation and organization have to be handled with care. Archiving is easier with digital data, which is why digitizing old data to save it in hierarchy and facets id a simple a easy means. Their talk also mentioned how metadata standards are used in crosswalk creation. Bonnie - Travel package Interoperability was the major takeaway form the talk. Linking numerous real time systems to work together involves the systems to interoperate. The most important features to be considered are: Naming things and collections based a controlled vocabulary since Systems talk to each other Security factors to be considered if the user is logged in/not logged in Who decides how things get to be done- data model Organization time or Retrieval time should be given importance And Bonnie kept emphasizing that Xml has a useful schema as a specification. Rushin Journey from an engineer primarily doing coding to an interaction designer for enterprise data software This talk particularly brought together all aspects of the I school as a whole and was the perfect portrayal of linking the dots. Her work involved Information architecture and data models Vocabulary problem related to leave approval should we use reject or denial User research Structured vs. unstructured data She also portrayed great courage and confidence that was really inspiring and encouraging.
