FARI.I CROPS CLASS:
So far in 1927 our class has been studying the producti on of
potatoes. We have learned. the 15 operations which are essential in
producing good potatoes. are: 1-Place t il e potato crop on soil
adapted to it. 2-Plow ground in fall or earlv spri ng and fit
the seed bed thoroughly. 3TGet the cleanest s ee d available of highest
yielding variety. 4. Treat see d with corrosive suolimate to control
scab and black scurf. 5. Plant whole seed or cut to size .
6. Green-sprout to increase vigor of gr oDth, hasten maturity, and
increase yield. 7. Use according to soil needs. 8. Plant at
ri ght time, and at proryer de 0th and spacing for your soil . 9. Cultivate
freguently and thoroughly. 10. Spray to control insects and diseases.
11. Ha rvest when mature, using best method. 12. to meet N. S.
Standards . 13. Store in well ventilated cellar or pits. 14. Practice
hill-selectiori of seed. 15. Grow potatoes in a pood rotation.
We have also studied diseases a:1cl insect pests of potatoes and how
to control them. 'Thile st udying diseas es we have found that scab is
one of the worst diseas es and ma y be controlled b y the
potatoes for i hour in a solution of 4 oz. of corrosive subliraa te in
30 gallons o:: r.ater.
',;e also learned that 90% of the \oJ orld' s suplJ ly of potatoes are
procluce d. in Euro] e, and German;v raises of these.

SOI LS CLASS;
We all came back to school a ltar vacation, s a d that vacation was

I.Ir . Brown assured us that v; e \Noulcl be in for no , ' Ortuni next

We ha ve been about acid soils and the ways of
this condition.
Before alfalf a it is to correct the acidity of the
soil. This is usuall y done asing lime. Acid s oils may be detected
b y using the Soiltex Test. It is fun to wo r k this tast and easy too.
Ea ch memb e r of the has given a r an ort on fe rtilizer for differ-

if we could get Ur. Brown to talk about skates and skd.ting. are
