After reading the text given to complete the assignment, I consider Karl Bhlers framework to be the most suitable one in constructing an analysis. He underlines the most important language functions : expression, appeal and representation. Both units have a very good structure, starting from general data, continuing with particular information, therefore developing a proper body for the exposure of the elements that ought to be discussed. It can be observed that the text is transmitted through a written medium and the mode used is the multilingual-parallel one, taking into account that the subject of discussion is Linguistics the scientific approach to the investigation of natural languages. Expression is the language function that best describes the first unit, because the information presented is oriented towards the language-user and the text tends to be an outline of the subject approached. The text has a logical scheme, because, in my opinion, it is better to create an image about the subject and only then to underline its most important details. Consequently, this function can be seen both as an image, as a portrait of the general information that lies within the text and also as one of the pillars that constitute the triangle of language. From my point of view, everything that surrounds us is image and representation and the language does not constitute an exception. EXPRESSION IMAGE APPEAL DETERMINATION REPRESENTATION REALITY

Both units have the same structure, but I consider that the second one tends to use appeal as the most highlighted language function, due to the fact that the author tries to persuade the reader and to offer more information in order to create a connection between the first instance of the image, and the second one of the determination and influence. This fact can be proved by concrete examples from the text : if in the first unit the text is oriented on showing the nature of linguistics, the perspective drew upon it and the object of language, the second unit develops the subject, underlining more instances of language (collection of oppositive sets, symbolic sign, means of communication) and connecting it with the background of culture. So, the reader is determined to take the course of the action on his/her side, in this way, creating a more developed image upon the subject.

In conclusion, the answer of the question given Is the mode of the language used consistent with the medium of delivery? is obvious : yes, the mode of the language used is consistent in the written medium, because it offers proper information, given in a formal way, but also very well structured, with the goal of capturing the readers attention towards the subject. Therefore, the style of the language employed helps in achieving the communication goal of the text analyzed.
