Together with its legions of fans, it will be hard to say goodbye to the residents of Bon Temps, but I look forward to what promises to be a fantastic final chapter of this incredible show.

The Show Must Go On

British actor Sacha Baron Cohen has quit the leading role in a biopic about Freddie Mercurys life. Sacha, Brian Mays first choice to play the late singer, departed the project in July following alleged clashes with the members of Queen over the films direction. The actor reportedly wanted to make a gritty, tell all movie about the singer while the surviving members of Queen wanted a family friendly outlook of the singers life. In spite of this the makers have told BBC the film is still very much alive despite writer Peter Morgans comment of saying it was probably not going to happen.

Late last week Columbia Tri-Star debuted the first trailer for the remake of 1987 action film, Robocop. The film will see Joel Kinnaman take the role of Alex Murphy (Robocop) with appearances from Hollywood heavyweights Samuel L. Jackson and Gary Oldman. Little was said in their comments other than Coming in 2014 but one thing can be safely assumed, with a PG-13 rating it will not be as gory as the 1980s, R rated original.

Boasting names such as Fat Freddys, Phoenix Foundation and artists like Flip Grater on stage, this is one you dont want to miss.

Sola Rosa are once again back on the road, replete with a new lineup and set of tunes. Laurels been making waves in the world of electronic music, blurring the lines between techno, ambient, pop concrete, dub and synthetic psychedelia. With rave reviews from Pitchfork and The New York Times, getting the thumbs up from these hard-ass critics means shes doing something right. Oh, did we mention that Quarantine was Wire magazines #1 album of the year? Yeah. Shes good.

Ive had many a good time at this particular establishment. Even on the most flaccid of nights, a trek to Golden Dawn will bring it around, and youll have a tale or two to show for it. Just open up and see where the night takes you. Tropical Bass Nation is a good place to start.

Calexico are returning to New Zealand! Its been two years since Joey Burns and John Covertino last decided to grace our shores. This is a rare treat, combining elements of Portuguese fado, 50s jazz, gypsy music, 60s surf & country twang, spaghetti western epics and dark and moody indie rock all under the banner of desert noir.

PROWLER
THE KINGS ARMS
8PM, $10, DOOR SALES ONLY

Im going to let the bands self-fashioned description speak for itself: Blending ragged fury with roaring power, Prowler produces a tsunami wall of overdriven guitars, thick- heavy bass, explosive drums and lashings of hoarse vocals. Hardcore/Punk enthusiasts, this is basically all you can ask for.

STAN WALKER
MICHAEL FOWLER CENTRE
8PM

As one of NZs most popular artists, Stan Walker made his rise to fame on that cult phenomenon known as Australian Idol. With boyishly good looks and a powerful voice to match, hes been all over the airwaves and isnt seeing any signs of slowing. Michael Buble said Stan was the best vocalist he had ever seen on a series of Idol, worldwide. Personally, I trust the triple Grammy-winners judgment.

Chvrches came together spontaneously in late 2011, when Iain Cook and Martin Doherty asked vocalist Lauren Mayberry to add vox to tracks theyd been producing and were pleasantly surprised with the results. Mayberry used to sing in a folkindie band Blue Sky Archives, whilst Cook played with muted post-rockers Aereogramme, and Doherty toured with Glaswegian rockers the Twilight Sad. Despite their gloomy pedigrees, Chvrches first EP Recover (which features in the new album along with its companion singles) showed a coming together to explore synth pops artificial sunlight. Now if youve been reading the English press lately the then Chvrches will be quietly percolating away in your subconscious. As any band worthy of the Darling Touch from the music illuminati these guys have been truly blessed. Yet, in a sea of Euro-pop homogeneousness their opener The Mother We Share almost sinks beyond trace. Fortunately, stronger edger efforts emerge, albeit slowly from the bottom of the

creation pool (We Sink, Gun, Science/Visions). Its true this album is swamped (pun intended) in the 80s lush, velvet curtain. Chvrches sound is at times is not unlike Alison Goldfrapps midcareer efforts, albeit without her twisted and provocative prowess. And theres the real difference. With music that still follows the Ministry of Sounds anthematic build-and-drop you really need some point of difference. So, its only at the very end that we see any real promise with You Caught The Light, chords and bass to fill a stadium contrasted by Sigur Rsstyle ethereal haunting. Finally, some darkness returns. Perhaps a little gloom is not a bad thing after all.

ROMEO & JULIET - A LOVE SONG Blue Jasmine
directed by Woody Allen Starring Cate Blanchett, Alec Baldwin, sally hawkins

We know youve witnessed this story in some shape or form a handful of times over the years, but it seems like every generations entitled to give it a crack. Tim van Dammens rendition brings together the tale of the Montagues and Capulets for the YouTube generation.

RIDDICK
GENERAL RELEASE

Vin Diesel as Riddick certainly embodies a memorable character who wormed his way into the heart of many a sci-fi enthusiast. While theyve taken on a whole different storytelling angle since Pitch Black, this dark and twisted universe still ticks off all of the boxes for a good sci-fi thriller.

PRIME ROCKS: THE WHO

PRIME, 9.40PM

I fell in love with the name Jasmine, declares Alec Baldwins Hal at a glittery Park Avenue dinner party. Jasmine (Cate Blanchett), whose real name is actually Jeanette, is the ultimate wisteria girl, a beautiful social climber who has fashioned herself into a diamond-dripping society wife. Her name isnt the only fabrication. Hals fortune is built on lies and crumbles Bernie Madoff-style into ruin, leaving Hal in jail and Jasmine in hell, seeking shelter in San Francisco with her adopted sister (Sally Hawkins). This is Woody Allen in peak form. He has stripped out that jabbering New York paranoia and gleefully poked a big stick at Americas ruling class. That doesnt mean the working class characters escape unscathed. Theyre all in Jasmines big mess together. Blanchett as snobby Jasmine a role that clearly takes cues from Tennessee Williams Blanche DuBois holds on to her Chanel and Herms as tightly as she grips the vodka bottle. Even when at her most despicable and broken

she looks amazing and triumphs at making cruel, selfish Jasmine impossible to hate. You cant help but sympathise as you watch the seeds of mental illness and drug dependency take root. Its an extraordinarily layered performance no wonder Oscar rumours are swarming already. The films success is not all credit to Blanchett. Theres great support from the rest of the cast. Special mentions: Peter Sarsgaard who does slithery so well and 80s comedian Andrew Dice Clay making the best acting comeback since Travolta in Pulp Fiction. Allens beloved New York still features splendidly in periodic flashbacks that unpick Jasmines downfall just how much she knew about hubbys fraudulent activities is the central question. Allens trademark fast-talking humour is entertainingly intact, its the darker tone underpinning this film that sets it apart and lingers long after leaving the cinema.
By Frances Morton, Flicks.co.nz

I think its a pretty safe assumption to say that we dont actually need to tell you who The Who is. Beset by money problems, a studio in construction, herointaking managers, a lunatic drummer and a culture of heavy drinking, this is the story of their last great album: Quadrophenia.

BLACKLISTT
Guitarist for Nu-Metal band Blacklistt, Marcus Powell, is taking a break when the phone rings. A bit of a relief he tells me. Its good to do an interview right now. Take the heat off. Hes in the middle of getting ink done. What could be more rocknroll? Im getting a hawk, holding a heart and inside that is a compass. Its right across my chest. For me the the hawk is the all-seeing eyes. It can only see whats in front of it. And its holding the heart because, to me, what ever direction youre going, thats your compass - so follow your heart! True that. And he reminds me that only with pain is there the gain, a message portrayed on the cover of Blacklistts new self-titled album, which is due to release on Friday the 13th. The art is a blended slash of a skull, fantail and a blood rose. Damien (Alexander, vocals) came up with the idea. But its a collaborative thing were four highly creative, highly opinionated perfectionists so its no wonder its taken us so long. When know weve got a good product when we all finally agree! For Blacklistt, its also a kind of phoenix moment, the band rising from the legal ashes of a bitter feud between them and former drummer Shelton Woolright over the legal use of their former name. A lot of the reason why it took so long was that battle. We wanted to get Blindspott back. We are Blindspott. We asked Shelton if he wanted to be part of it (when we reformed) and he never replied then we got offered Homegrown (in that same year), we offered him to come in but then out of the blue we get a Court order to shut down. And we thought oh well! Lets sort this out but it didnt and we thought if we keep on fighting it will never get sorted. Powells referring to Blindspotts reunion in 2009. Two years before, after 10 years together and many publicized band fallouts along the way, Blindspott had disbanded to focus on solo efforts. But in 2009 the band announced they were reuniting for a one off at the all-Kiwi Vodafone Homegrown Music Festival in the Capital. The gig went well, albeit without Woolright. Encouraged, they decided to write new material, reforming with its earliest, original members: Damian Alexander (vocals), Marcus Powell (guitar, backing vocals), Gareth Fleming (bass) and Karl Vilisini (turntables, keyboards). Then suddenly on 26 September 2010 Woolwright pulled their Facebook page down, the same day they were confirmed for the line up in the following years Homegrown. The next day a photo was posted by a band member showing Tristan Reilly as the new drummer for the band. Just prior to the 2011 Homegrown gig Woolright had the bands Facebook page pulled down again and this time he sent in sent the legal eagles. But you know, Powell surmises the best thing that could of happened is us saying F***k it! Keep it [the Blindspott name]. And it was amazing as soon as we let go of that, all these other doors opened up. Ironically, appropriately the band headed at Homegrown 2012 again before touring the new From the Blind Spot show, which sold out virtually everywhere. The fan base was still with them, despite the name change. They are pretty hardcore, says Powell. Seeing the numbers that turned up was phenomenal, it built pressure to release an album. The new work is, he suggests, a stark contrast to recording the second Blindspott album, End the Silence. Previously there was a lot of pressure to produce three-minute radio friendlies. But we thought were not Blindspott so F***K that. Well jam it the way we wanted. A six minute track is just fine, eh? No boundaries. Freeing up the creative juices, even meant turntablist Karl Vilisinis weird fruity stuff got a look in, at least on the surface. A writers weekend on Waiheke Island last year produced many of the albums key music Productive but good to just hang out, chill as mates, and it definitely brought a vibe back. The new single Home written there, renamed from Waiheke Dub, featuring Albert Cook (Three Houses Down) on drums. It recalls the poignancy of earlier singles like Phlex whilst showcasing a very different side to Blacklistts sound. In the summer months Blacklistt hit Parnells York Street studios with engineer Hayden Taylor following hard-out perfection rehearsals at their space, the Killing Room. Overall this album brings back the assault of Blindspotts first album and the original energy of a group of fifth formers, circa 1997. As for their hopes for Blacklistt Powelld love go #1. Blindspott were only local act in history to have two consecutive albums debut at the top! Thatd be cool! But no matter making music is n our DNA. Our fans want it, we want it. So there you are! Following its release on 13.09.2013 the band hit the road, taking this album to our fans will be like delivering on a promise. Pledge allegiance! WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR

EA Sports UFC Preview

Announced at E3 in 2012, EA Sports UFC immediately caused quite a stir in the gaming community. The first part of a multi-year, multi-product partnership with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, UFC - when it releases next year - will bring Fight Night sensibilities to an all-new sporting code for the first time, making it an interesting prospect for a whole range of gamers - even those who arent familiar with the sport itself. Feel the fight is the slogan EA are using to sum up the very core of UFC; the technologies that will combine in order to create a simulated fight experience designed to draw players in far more than previous games have so far. Examples shown include the way in which fighters actually express their feelings in their faces, showing emotion and actually tracking their competitor in a realistic manner as the fight progresses. It sure looks the part already, anyway. The build we were able to play in Germany recently was limited - a reflection of the games early stage of development - but you could perform a wide variety of kicking and punching attacks (including some of the more spectacular, like one where you run up the wall of the octagon and kick your opponent in the face), all of which were authentic and had a realistic weight to them. We were also shown a video of the ground-based grappling UFC fans will recognise, which toggled between having the new body deformation technology enabled and disabled. With it switched off, the fighters appeared much as you might imagine; grappling together like action figures. But then they showed it with deformation switched on. All of a sudden, I understood what a big deal this technology is and just how much its going to change the way all sports games (not just fighting games) look from this point onward. Its far too soon to make a call on how good UFC will turn out to be, but what weve seen so far is painting a very impressive picture indeed. Its got the Fight Night development pedigree, a solid license, fun (albeit basic - for now) gameplay, and technology that might just raise the bar for all sports games. If you like to fight, keep an eye out for UFC sometime toward the middle of 2014.

Battlefield 4 Preview
Battlefield 4 takes the series basic formula, as brought to near perfection in 2011s Battlefield 3, and adds in a bunch of extra stuff like dynamic water, largescale destruction, and new multiplayer modes, while quietly dropping some of the less successful stuff like the co-op campaign mode. Where things get particularly interesting is in the console space; next-gen is right around the corner and DICE are promising some big improvements to the Battlefield experience players have in their living rooms. Chief among these changes are the fact that the game will be rendered in 1080P while allowing for wait for it - 64 players in a match, a first for consoles. With all this stuff front of mind, I was eager to see what the game felt like on PlayStation 4 - an opportunity EA were only too eager to afford me at an event in Germany recently. The map we played on, called Paracel Storm, is set on a small archipelago that features inclement weather and loads of vehicles to play with. Ive played through the level multiple times now, on both PC and PS4, and can honestly say that I didnt ever have the same experience twice. There are so many variables in play now - from the weapons to the players to the destruction and the enhanced levolution features - that it seems reasonable to expect continuous variety for as long as you play the game; a statement few other shooters can truly lay claim to. What lies beneath the hype, it seems, is another iteration of Battlefield; if youre a fan of the series, youll not be surprised to hear that and you have my official permission to get excited. If youre not, well, you should probably still check out the open beta when it launches in October. Battlefields multiplayer deserves its plaudits and Battlefield 4 seems likely to push the franchise meaningfully forward - I, for one, cant wait. Look for our full review in October, with a next-gen review once those versions are available in November.

Calexico
Its good to catch up again. The last time I talked to Joey Burns, lead singer and one of the founders of alt country outfit Calexico, he and I were chillin in the warm Taranaki sun, after a stompin gig at the WOMAD festival. That was over two years ago. I love that festival, set amongs the bush, and I really loved the Wellington, too. The compactness the people and how even in a city, everyone is so laid back. Indeed the Bowl of Brooklands is a setting in extreme contracts from where the Calexican duo of Burns and John Convertino have set up their base, near the Sonoran desert and still live doors away from each other and their friend Howe Gelb, from their days in his rhythm section of the band Giant Sand, where they originally met. Calexicos music blends the influences of desert living, near the Mexican border, with Latin rhythms, swelling mariachi horns and swooning pedal steel, an aural wide-screen vistas experience. But also implicit in Calexicos vision is a belief beyond borders of any kind: cultural, musical, or political. In a fine nostalgic mood Burns is relaxed, on the phone from Tuscon, where hes just got back from a European tour. It was a mixed affair, a combination of festivals and headline shows - Roskilde, Sziget Festival and Glastonbury - although tere we were booked way to close to the Stones show. But thats festivals for you. Of all the dates, Burns remembers a show in Portugal as the best. Just the crowd and the vibe, but what an electric feeling! Although we do this weird Arizona thing the Latin countries really love it. Our guitarist is from Madrid, we have a German instrumentalist and others in the band are from al over, so that helps the international flavour and respect, I guess. That comment leads to a conversation about unique cultural diversity, a popular topic with Burns. He talks about his respect for local producers. One advantage of attending festivals is that you get to come in contact with small local producers and you can appreciate what they are doing. People have an opportunity to support them at a personal level. Thats great. As we talk the subject of unique local Kiwi cuisine comes up. I suggest he try Feijoa vodka whilst hes here. Id love to try different wines, support local products. Theres a special pride in that. Calexico proudly sell alternative versions of their album, covers and concerts at their merch stands. I think its important to offer something individual and untainted to our audience, so they can go away with more that just a souvenir or the show. They get more of a back story about us, too. One example of this is Spiritso, a collaboration with RadioSymphonieorchester Wien and Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg, which was made at the suggestion of their German based label, and will be packaged with Algiers when sold on tour. We took three songs from the Algiers plus seven others and went in to a studio in Potsdam, where they made the soundtrack (for the film) Metropolis. It was amazing. Weve only worked with an orchestra once before, in Louisville, Kentucky. The place is old world elegance. The label is great, they really care about artist development, so they arranged the orchestra, the space and the opportunity. Were grateful for that. WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR

MARK LANEGAN
Mark Lanegan is a bit gruff on the phone. Talking to me from his LA home, where hes waiting for my Tour to start, hes a short and concise with his answers. Something hes well known for. Lanegan doesnt suffer journalists easily. But no matter. His music speaks volumes for him. As king of the collaborators, hes led a creative musical career spanning the years, from early 80s alt band, The Screaming Trees, an incarnation of the Queens of the Stone Age (of which hes still a touring member, on and off ), and was once their main vocalist to the Gutter Twins (with Greg Duli), The Twilight Singers and a partner in crime dueting with Belle and Sebastians female vocalist Isobel Campbell. Musically, Lanegans drifted between harder alt rock into re-interpreted blues and Folk/Americana of late, especially in his work with Campbell. Another constant force has been long-term friend and former Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli, who he tours with on occasion under the brand the Gutter Twins. Gregs a sort of alter ego, I suppose, he conjectures in a growly baritone voice, reminiscent of a more youthful Tom Waits. But hes a great friend. I was honoured to receive a song from him, (Deepest Shade), which he wrote for his (current) band The Twilight Singers. Its a sweet tune with a brooding undercurrent, completely in step with Lanegans lifetime of recurring themes of exjunkie transcendence, religious mysticism and melancholic desperation. In his earliest days, Lanegan was a heavy drug user, became a petty thief and was heading on a rail to nowhere, saved, it is written, by Van Conner, whom he would eventually form the band the Screaming Trees with. The band was a psychedelic rock effort that created the blueprint for Seatles grunge scene. And fittingly Soundgardens Chris Cornell later produced their 1991 album Uncle Anaesthesia. Its long been reported that Lanegans family life growing up was dysfunctional, contributing to his youthful waywardness. So it was surprising to find out that the inspiration for his new covers album, Imitations, was in part inspired nostalgically, by his parents record collection and that very same home life. Tracks like You Only Live Twice, which Lanegan does as a stripped back to simple guitar/blues based rendition, and an oddly dark assimilation of Hall and Oates originally vaseline smooth Shes Gone show Lanegan in his element. He denied the family dysfunction, abruptly, but was quick to change the subject hinting that this was off limits. Instead Lanegans rationale for recording the older tunes, including Andy Williams, Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin was about creating the sound of those old records the way they felt when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s. And I was always impressed with the orchestrations and lushness of them. The way they somehow sounded sad, even if they werent. WRITTEN BY TIM GRUAR
