eparating recyclables will be a
practice of the past for Burlington
County residents starting next
May with the implementation of
streamlined recycling.
The big blue cart, which residents
currently use for cardboard and paper,
will soon be an all-purpose recycling
tool.
The county boasts single-stream as
more convenient and a way to increase
recycling volume as well as save money.
Mt. Laurel Township manager Maureen
Mitchell agrees wholeheartedly.
It makes the lives of our residents so
much easier. They dont have to sepa-
rate bottles and cans from paper or
cardboard. It makes it a lot easier to re-
cycle, Mitchell said. Its a fantastic
program. It helps in saving the environ-
ment, and the township as well as the
taxpayers will save money. Communi-
ties throughout our township have been
good about recycling and this will only
improve that.
According to the county, studies show
single-stream brings with it an increase
of 10 percent or more in recycling. The
more people recycle, the less waste
there is in landfills. Last year, recycling
saved the towns more than $3.2 million
in landfill tipping fees. Those cost-sav-
ings are effectively tax savings, since
they improve the bottom line of munici-
pal budgets.
Currently, the county is working to
find out whether residents are in need
of the signature blue cart, or a second
cart to supplement the amount of recy-
clables put to the curb each week. Ini-
tially, the cart program did have a few
detractors in Mt. Laurel.
Homeowners associations and
condo associations had concerns over
the size of the bins as they are unable to
store them outside residences, so, would
the larger bins fit into a one-car
garage? Mitchell said. We worked
with the county to allow communities
like our 55-year-old and over develop-
ments to use smaller bins.
The county estimates that more than
30,000 homes may need an extra cart, of
differing sizes. It will take months to
gather everyones information, order
the carts, and deliver the right size carts
to the right homes next spring. If resi-
dents currently have a 48-gallon, 64-gal-
lon or 96-gallon cart, theyre asked to
visit the county website to determine
whether they need a second one before

been encouraging to order a second bin
now while the county is paying.

The following items were
taken from reports on file with
the Mt. Laurel Police Depart-
ment:
An employee of Whitesell Real
Estate on East Gate Drive report-
ed a theft. Copper coils from sev-
eral air conditioning units, val-
ued at more than $100,000, were
taken from air conditioning units
on the roof.
The incident occurred between
4 p.m., Aug. 29, and 8 a.m., Aug.
30. This case remains under in-
vestigation.
A resident of the unit block of
East Berwin Way reported a bur-
glary and theft to a residence.
The incident occurred between
4:30 p.m., Aug. 29 and 6:30 p.m.,
Sept. 1. Entry was gained by forc-
ing the side window. Jewelry, val-
ued at approximately $900, was
taken.
Mt. Laurel Police arrested a 50-
year-old man, of the 4500 block of
Fenwick Lane, on Sept. 3 for pos-
session of drug paraphernalia.
He was arrested on outstanding
warrants incident to police inves-
tigation at the McDonalds on
Route 38 at 4:33 p.m. Drug para-
phernalia was located on his per-
son during a search incident to
arrest.
He was charged with posses-
sion of drug paraphernalia. He
was lodged at the Burlington
County Jail in lieu of $2,500 bail.
Mt. Laurel Police arrested a 29-
year-old man, of the 500 block of
Friesburg Aldine Road, Elmer, on
Sept. 3 for possession of medica-
tion not prescribed. He was ar-
rested at the Roadway Inn on
Route 73 on an outstanding war-
rant at 9:02 p.m.
The medication was discov-
ered during a search incident to
arrest. The man was charged
with possession of medication
not prescribed. He was lodged at
the Burlington County Jail on the
outstanding warrant with no
bail.

The Mt. Laurel Public Educa-
tion Funds 19th annual Golf
Classic will be held on Monday,
Sept. 16 at the Laurel Creek Coun-
try Club.
Its been a wonderful event,
MLPEF president George
Greatrex said. Folks from all
over the community coming to-
gether and supporting a cause
that helps our children and our
schools.
Last year, the MLPEF donated
$30,000 to the district, funds that
were used to restore several after-
school clubs and related activities
deleted from the districts operat-
ing budget due to recent state aid
reductions.
What is very cool about the
event is you can see the results.
You can actually see where the
money goes and what programs
and extracurricular activities are
impacted by the funds raised,
Greatrex said.
Clubs and after-school activi-
ties from music at Fleetwood
School to video production at
Hartford School to wiffle ball at
Springville are all directly funded
by the MLPEF. The board of edu-
cation announced that, in total, 23
clubs were sponsored by the
MLPEF for the upcoming school
year.
The MLPEF is an independent
non-profit charitable organiza-
tion whose mission is to support
quality education in the district.
Since 1994, the fund has donated
more than $700,000 to the district.
Money has also been used to fund
technology upgrades for each
classroom, grants to teachers to
support innovative programs,
and scholarships to students in
need of tutoring whose families
may find it a financial burden.
This is the main fundraising
event of the year for the MLPEF.
It is looking for financial support
for this event and its mission by
purchasing a sponsorship, play-
ing golf or both. Hole and tee
sponsorships are $150, with high-
er sponsorship levels available.
The event began initially as a
way for the schools to reach out to
Mt. Laurels businesses and cor-
porations for fundraising, but
now, according to Greatrex, it is a
hybrid of both.
Weve been impressed with
how many of Mt. Laurels fami-
lies have stepped up to support

said the event is fun even for

and join us for dinner. There are
presentations; we honor some of
the teachers from the district,
Greatrex said.
The camaraderie of the com-
munity coming together for this
event to support a great cause is

The county assured residents
that the program is free of charge
and the frequency of service will
not change. Mt. Laurel will still
provide a drop-off center for resi-
dents who have recyclables be-
tween pickups.
Currently, major facility modi-
fications are being made to the
Robert C. Shinn Recycling Center
in Westampton. Following that,
new single-stream sorting equip-
ment will be installed, according
to the county.
To determine whether an extra
cart is needed, residents are

usage and if another cart is need-
ed.

welve years have passed since
the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on
New York City and Washing-
ton, D.C.
Thats hard to believe.
Its hard to believe that it was 12
years ago that this country changed
forever.
Its hard to believe that it was 12
years ago that so many innocent lives
were lost.
Its hard to believe how much our
lives have changed in those 12 years
how heightened security at public
places, especially airports, is expected
and openly accepted; how a persons
privacy is not always private; how
farewell and welcome home celebra-
tions for servicemen and women seem
to be commonplace.
There are so many other examples
to mention of how our lives have
changed since that fateful day 12 years
ago.
Here we are, more than a decade
later, with 9/11 as a memory for all of
us who lived it, and a history lesson
for those who didnt.
Twelve years later, we should all be
proud of the way we are remembering
and honoring those who lost their
lives that day as well as their families,
and also the servicemen and women
and their families who so bravely
have volunteered to serve this country.
In addition to annual memorials put
on at the national level, local commu-
nities are playing a large part, too. Our
community, and others around us, are
setting up 9/11 memorials, obtaining
steel from the World Trade Center to
display and hosting 9/11 remem-
brances.
We should all be proud of ourselves
and our fellow citizens. But we should
not stop here just because we have
done well so far.
We should never forget what hap-
pened 12 years ago. We should always
respectfully pause and respect those
who were taken from us and those
who fight for our freedom.
And we should ensure that those
who werent alive 12 years ago, or were
too young to remember, are taught
about what happened that day, and
how it will continue to affect our lives
and theirs.
We will never forget.

With support from an alliance of educa-
tion advocates, Burlington County College
unveiled an initiative to distribute 40,000
books to children in need throughout
Burlington County.
Working with N.J. Higher Education sec-
retary Rochelle Hendricks, John Harmon,
Sr., president and CEO, of the African
American Chamber of Commerce, and
First Book, a nonprofit social enterprise
that provides new books and educational
resources to kids in need, BCC students
will coordinate efforts to distribute free
books to schools and organizations serving
communities in need throughout Burling-
ton County.
The college is the first in the nation to
build this effort into its English and Serv-
ice Learning curriculum.
Every child should have books to read
at home, Burlington County freeholder
Joe Donnelly said. Burlington County
College will be a model for the rest of the
nation on how students and community
groups can get books to children who need
them.
First Book is part of an education initia-
tive by the African American Chamber of
Commerce of New Jersey called Making
New Jersey More Competitive. The goal is
to develop and strengthen the marketable
skills of future job seekers throughout the
state.
First Book will help achieve this goal by
delivering new, high-quality books and ma-
terials to children in need in Burlington
County.
This is one of a number of initiatives
by our organization that will provide an
immediate impact in transforming the
lives of our young people and place them
on a path of success, Harmon said.
Hendricks wants the initiative to suc-
ceed and spread throughout the state.
What a wonderful project! Student vol-
unteers will help distribute 40,000 new
books to open worlds of ideas for disadvan-
taged children, Hendricks said. I am
very pleased that Burlington County Col-
lege is collaborating with First Book and
the African American Chamber of Com-
merce to stir the imaginations and build
the literacy skills of children throughout
Burlington County.

sion and agenda aimed at helping
more students complete college
and reducing the number of stu-
dents who enter college in need of
developmental courses.
We believe all students can
succeed with the right approach,
BCC president David C. Hespe
said.
The simple act of giving chil-
dren books will make them
stronger readers and develop a
lifelong passion of learning that
will help them succeed through-
out their education and career.
This is also a tremendous oppor-
tunity for our students to partici-
pate in a worthwhile and reward-
ing project.

prove educational opportunities
for children in need.
The project will span the entire
2013-2014 academic year.
Students will identify and con-
tact potentially eligible groups
and encourage them to apply to
First Book.
This spring, a truck will deliv-
er 40,000 books with a retail value
of nearly $400,000, donated by
publishers to BCCs Mt. Laurel
Campus.
Students will sort the books
and distribute them to groups
that meet certain criteria, such as
serving disabled children, mili-
tary families or a large number of
low-income families.
