Smith Meter Flow Computer

SyberTrol
Specifications
Issue/Rev. 0.7 (6/10) Bulletin SS09036

The Smith Meter SyberTrol is a microprocessorbased, fully-programmable, electronic flow computer designed to continuously monitor and control the flow of liquid petroleum products. The SyberTrol can operate as a high-integrity, standalone flow computer or as a powerful building block for integration into a supervisory computer control system. The flow computer includes either an explosion-proof or general purpose housing, interfacing for remote communications, temperature, pressure and density monitoring, process loop control, and report printing. Along with these capabilities the SyberTrol is capable of providing analog and pulse outputs to remote equipment. The modular construction and internal communications scheme of the instrument provides the capability of adding inputs and outputs, and adding remote displays to meet the requirements of most applications.

Flow Computer The SyberTrol is designed to accommodate pipeline, batch loading, and product batching types of applications. The programmability of the instrument makes it ideal for handling these applications whether they require multiple products or involve multiple meter factors and meter factor linearization. Pipeline Deliveries Pipeline deliveries are normally continuous flow operations. When operating in this application, the SyberTrol is typically configured to print a new report at the start of each day. The time that the Daily Report is required defines the start of a new reporting period. Product totals can be programmed to reset at the start of a new day or continuously accumulate volume. Flow rate control is available to prevent meter damage, react to line pressure variations, or to balance flow in a multiple meter configuration. Batch Deliveries Batch deliveries are considered to be those operations processing a predetermined amount of product. In this operation, the user can define 636 (depending on the number of meter positions configured) separate deliveries while the SyberTrol maintains the records of the batches previously delivered. Each batch defines the product, its flow rates, and quantity to be delivered. Additionally, the SyberTrol provides for 16 user-defined Product Records to aid in defining a batch. A product record identifies a particular product by its name, API group, density, and last recorded meter factor. In this type of operation, the flexible user-programmable valve control in the SyberTrol is often used. This allows the user to set the normal delivery flow rate, a reduced flow rate for delivery completion, and the remaining volume at which the reduced flow rate is delivered. (Programming of these rates is determined by the type of valve selected by the user.)

Applications
The SyberTrol instrument can be configured to be a dual function unit which includes Flow Computer functions as well as Prover Controller functions.

The Most Trusted Name In Measurement

Product Batching Product batching in continuous flow pipeline operations is a common practice in the pipeline industry. The different product deliveries are programmed into the SyberTrol as batches in the order of their delivery. Once a batch is underway, its end (or start of the next batch) is signaled by a contact closure external to the SyberTrol. This signal can be provided by a manual switch, a densitometer with range switches to indicate product change, or by a sphere detector if the products are physically separated. Remote product selection via communications is also available as a standard feature on the SyberTrol. Prover The SyberTrol is designed to control proving through conventional provers: unidirectional and bidirectional, small volume provers, and master meters. Four methods of proving are available in the SyberTrol, although not all methods are valid for each type of prover: quick trips, consecutive, progressive consecutive, and groups. Conventional Provers Conventional provers use a relatively large volume between detector switches. Two sets of detector switches can be programmed in the SyberTrol. This is known as the calibrated volume. The SyberTrol utilizes the API standard calculations to correct the calibrated volume for the effects of pressure and temperature on both the liquid and the steel pipe. The SyberTrol completely controls the provers operation and monitors all necessary status conditions as well as liquid temperature and system pressure. The suggested number of proving runs, allowable proving deviations, time-out values, and other operational parameters are user programmed into the SyberTrol to define a valid proving operation. Small Volume Provers Small volume provers incorporate the latest advancements in proving technology. These provers have a small calibrated volume and use the principle of Dual Pulse Chronometry to achieve the high level of pulse resolution necessary to prove a meter. The SyberTrol is designed to operate with the Smith Meter Small Volume Provers. Two methods of proving are used with small volume provers, dependent on the meter being calibrated. The first method uses the same procedure as performed with conventional provers. This method uses consecutive runs of the prover to establish the data base for calculating the meter factor. The second method is intended to be used with meters having a cyclic pulse output. This method groups consecutive proving runs to establish an average factor. Consecutive group averages are then used to establish the meter factor. The SyberTrol supports both methods of provingthe method from the keypad or through communications with a host computer. Master Meter Master meter proving is selected when one meter is used to serve as the reference for the proving of another meter; the reference meter is known as a master me-

ter. A comparison of the two outputs is the basis of the master meter proving method. SyberTrol automatically supervises a complete proving cycle acquiring information from both the master meter and the line meter to derive a new meter factor. Proving Reports When the proving has been completed according to the proving method selected, the SyberTrol will perform the API calculations required to determine the new meter factor. The new meter factor is displayed and the configured proving report is generated and sent to the printer if a communications line is selected for either a dedicated or shared printer. The operator has the option of either installing the new meter factor in the flow computer automatically or acknowledging the new meter factor but not downloading it to the flow computer.

Hardware Options
Digital Inputs/Outputs The digital input/output modules on the SyberTrol have been designed to provide the customer with the flexibility of using them as either inputs or outputs depending on how they are wired and how they are programmed within the unit. The standard hardware configuration for the SyberTrol provides eight of the input/output modules. The inputs can be programmed as assert high or low and the outputs can be programmed as assert high or low. On power-down all outputs are normally open. Optionally the SyberTrol can be equipped with up to 32 input/output modules. This includes the 8 modules provided with the standard hardware package and up to 24 modules provided as optional hardware. The 24 additional modules are provided in groups of 8 input/output modules; therefore, the expanded unit can be supplied with 16, 24, or 32 input/output modules. Analog Inputs/Outputs The SyberTrol analog input/output modules are supplied to meet the application needs of the customer. The modules are supplied as RTD input, 420 mA or 15 Vdc input or output modules depending on the customers requirements. Four of these modules can be supplied in the standard hardware configuration; they must be specified as inputs or outputs and are programmable as to their function. Optionally the SyberTrol can be equipped with up to 12 analog input/output modules. This includes the 4 modules that can be provided with the standard hardware package, and up to 8 of the 12 analog inputs/outputs can be designated as RTD inputs; the remaining four modules would be either 420 mA or 15 Vdc modules or a combination of the two. SYCB Communications Board The SYCB Communications Board option provides the operator with a fourth programmable communications port that is EIA-232 compatible and can be programmed for the following protocols: Report Out, Smith Meter SVP Prover Communications, Smith Meter ASCII LRC,

Smith Meter ASCII CRC or Smith Meter Binary. The SYCB board is mounted via a pluggable connector on the Processor Board (FCPB) Also provided on the SYCB Communications Board is one digital input and one digital output. The digital output can be programmed as an Alarm Relay, a General Relay, or a SyberTrol Status Relay. The digital input can be programmed for a Remote Start, Remote Stop, End of Batch, Security Switch or a General Input.
