DSM-IV Criteria for Schizophrenia and other Psychotic Disorders SCHIZOPHRENIA Two or more symptoms, each present for

a significant portion of time during a 1 month period o Delusions o Hallucinations o Disorganized speech o Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior o Negative symptoms Social/occupational dysfunction Continuous signs of disturbance persist for at least 6 months Schizophrenia Subtypes PARANOID TYPE o Preoccupation with one or more delusions or frequent auditory hallucinations o None of the following are present: disorganized speech, disorganized or catatonic behavior, flat or inappropriate affect DISORGANIZED TYPE o Disorganized speech, disorganized behavior, and flat or inappropriate affect are prominent CATATONIC TYPE o Dominated by at least 2 of the following Motoric immobility as evidenced by catalepsy (including waxy flexibility) or stupor Excessive motor activity Extreme negativism (motiveless resistance to instruction or maintenance of rigid posture) or mutism Peculiarities of voluntary movement Echolalia or echopraxia RESIDUAL TYPE o Absence of prominent delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, and grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior o Continuing evidence of the disturbance as indicated by the presence of negative symptoms or 2 or more symptoms in an attenuated form UNDIFFERENTIATED TYPE SCHIZOPHRENIFORM DISORDER Two or more symptoms, each present for a significant portion of time during a 1 month period o Delusions o Hallucinations o Disorganized speech o Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior o Negative symptoms Episode lasts at least 1 month but less than 6 months

SCHIZOAFFECTIVE DISORDER Two or more symptoms, each present for a significant portion of time during a 1 month period o Delusions o Hallucinations o Disorganized speech o Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior o Negative symptoms Major Depressive Episode, Manic Episode, or Mixed Episode is concurrent with above symptoms Presence of delusions or hallucinations for at least 2 weeks in absence of mood symptoms DELUSIONAL DISORDER Nonbizzare delusions of at least 1 month duration o Hallucinations may be present if related to delusional theme Apart from impact of delusions, functioning is not impaired and behavior is not obviously odd or bizarre Types Ertomanic Type: delusions that another person, usually of higher status, is in love with the individual Grandiose Type: delusions of inflated worth, power, knowledge, identity, or special relationship to a deity or famous person Jealous Type: delusions that the individuals sexual partner is unfaithful Persecutory Type: delusions that the person is being malevolently treated Somatic Type: delusions that the person has some physical defect or general medical condition Mixed Type: no one theme dominates BRIEF PSYCHOTIC DISORDER Presence of 1 or more symptoms o Delusions o Hallucinations o Disorganized speech o Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior Duration of at least 1 day but less than 1 month, with eventual return to premorbid level of functioning SHARED PSYCHOTIC DISORDER (Folie a Deux) Delusion develops in an individual in the context of a close relationship with another person, who has an already-established delusion Delusion is similar in content to that of the person who already has the established delusion
