Teaching: Areas of Specialization


Singing for Actors: Introduction to musical theatre auditioning techniques. A masterclass setting in which non-music students will become comfortable singing in front of an audience, learn basic audition techniques, and develop a familiarity with basic music theory and repertoire. Musical Theatre: A master-class for singers and actors who sing to develop a musical theatre audition repertoire and to learn how to approach music from a lyrical/acting point of view. Beginning Acting: An introduction to acting as a craft and basic vocabulary: acting as behavior or doing, text/subtext, objective/obstacle, given circumstances, the as if, tactics. Respect for the actors voice and body as the instrument. Voice and Diction: Fundamentals of vocal production: breath support, articulation, and vocal dynamics. The marriage of impulse, breath, and sound to express the meaning of the text. Developing an effective warm-up using the methods of Kristin Linklater. An introduction to dialects using the International Phonetic Alphabet. Vocal Extremes: Advanced voice and speech work with extreme sounds, such as screaming, shouting, vomiting, choking, etc. Work with Alba Emoting and character voices. A study of how to stretch the voice to its limits in a practical, repeatable, and healthy way. Movement for Actors: Using the entire body as an expressive and receptive instrument. Understanding your body as it is perceived by others. Connecting sound, body, emotion, and reaction to scene work. A study of the methods of Laban, Chekhov, and Alexander. Introduction to Childrens Theatre/Creative Drama: Introduction to childrens literature, theatre games, warm-ups, and crafts for kids. Learning to adapt childrens stories into plays/musicals for kids of all ages to perform. This class is beneficial to any theatre, music, or education student who may be asked to conduct a childrens play, summer camp, or workshop for the arts.

Audition: Approaching auditioning as a job interview. Cold reading techniques. Selection and fine-tuning of six monologues that serve the actor. Incorporating nervousness into the preparation. Auditioning for invited guests. Dressing for success. Private Voice Lessons/Private Piano Lessons: A one-on-one study of the individual voice, technique, and repertoire; basics of piano and music theory. Class Voice: A study of the fundamentals of musical theatre performance, including breath, alignment, diction, style, etiquette, and music theory. A pre-requisite to private voice lessons. History of Theatre I: Theatre history from ritual theory and Greek origins to 18th century European practice. Includes focus on cultural and political contexts for theatre events and progressive influences of writers, designers, directors, and performers. History of Theatre II: Theatre history from 19th century romanticism to modern theory and practice. Special focus on non-western theatre development in Asia and Africa.
