Based on the author's own childhood, this story is the timeless tale of one shaker boy, his beloved pet pig, and the joy hardships that mark his passage into manhood. When Joey and his sister Mary Alice travel from their home in Chicago to their Grandmother's small town, they don't e crazy adventures they encounter there. During the early days of the Civil War, the Pruitt family takes in two mysterious young ladies who have fled New Orlea north to Illinois. Russell Culver's narration transports readers back to 1904, when he was 15 years old and still in eighth grade at Hom School, "an out-of-date, unimproved, one-room country schoolhouse in the backwoodsiest corner of Indiana." Living o his father, big sister, Tansy, and little brother, Lloyd, he dreams of hopping a freight train for the Dakotas. When the lo dies, Russell's sister takes over her position. This alarming development calls for action and even retaliation, but Russ Tansy more than a match for his mischief, pranks, and ill-considered plans. Peck is in his element here. The narrator's comes through as in his recollection of walking to school: "It was only about a mile, and uphill both ways, as the road t always was back then." In every other way, though, Russell seems no great distance in time from his experiences in t vivid is the telling of every event, conversation, and emotion. Best of all, the dry wit and unpretentious tone make the s comical, its characters memorable, and its conclusion unexpectedly moving. Debbie, who wishes that something would happen so she'll be a different person, and Hector, who feels he is "unfinish most of the novel. Both are 14 years old. Hector is a fabulous character with a wry humor and an appealing sense of s awareness. A secondary story involving Debbie's locket that goes missing in the beginning of the tale and is passed a number of characters emphasizes the theme of the book. The descriptive, measured writing includes poems, prose, h question-and-answer formats. There is a great deal of humor in this gentle story about a group of childhood friends fac crossroads of life and how they wish to live it.
