THE MAKING HISTORY OF QUANG NGAI PROVINCE

According to old history, the land of Tra River- An Mountain (Quang Ngai) reflects an age-old history (affiliated to the land of Tuong under the ruling of Qin Shihuangdi, to Nhat Nam District under the reign of Han Wu-ti of the Han dynasty in 111, to the nation of Lam Ap in the late Eastern Han dynasty in 192. The land was renamed Hai Am District under the Sui dynastys ruling and once again Son Chau in the Tang dynasty, and belonged to Co Luy- Chiem Thanh under the reign of the Song dynasty (960-1278). Later on, this land was reincorporated into the nation of Dai Ngu (Dai Viet) by the Ho dynasty (Ho Han Thuong). However, until the 15th century (the Le dynasty) the land was actually pacified. Over a long period, from the Le dynasty to the Nguyen dynasty, todays Quang Ngai belonged to Thua Tuyen Quang Nam and later was separated into Quang Nghia Town or Quang Nghia Province. In the early period of the 1945 general uprising, Quang Ngai Province was renamed Le Trung Dinh Province. Under the former Saigon regime (1954-1975), Quang Ngai

Province was divided into 10 districts: Binh Son, Son Tinh, Tu Nghia, Nghia Hanh, Mo Duc, Duc Pho (Trung Chau District), Tra Bong, Son Ha, Minh Long, Ba To (Thuong District). The two communes of Ly Son Island were merged into Binh Son District and named Binh Vinh and Binh Yen. Roasted Nieng: Nieng is a kind of fish that depicts a slightly narrow, slender body, sparkling silver scales. Since Nieng normally feeds on microorganism living at the root of waterfalls, angling for Nieng is very difficult. This type of fish is present in most of Quang Ngais mountainous districts and has long become the provinces specialty. Nieng is pinned with fresh pieces of bamboo and roasted on live coals. Niengs fat flows out under hot

fire, smelling attractive. It tastes good when roasted Nieng is served with ginger fish sauce or steamed Nieng guts with high quality rice spirits. Malt: This is a specialty of Quang Ngai that is chosen as a gift by domestic travellers when they have a chance to drop by Quang Ngai. Quang Ngais malt is slightly sweet and good for human health. The most outstanding of all is Dong Cat malt (Mo Duc) Sugar candies: Quang Ngai sugar candies are sold nationwide and exported to Southeast Asian countries. Apart from being served as a precious dish, sugar candies are steamed with lemons, kumquats to cure cough and sore throat. Crystal clear candies: Crystal clear candies are transparent like crystal and beautiful like a still life since they are yellow like roasted peanuts, ivory-white like sesame and very fragile. Previously, crystal clear candies were manufactured in only Thu Xa (Nghia Hoa Commune, Tu Nghia District) but now are produced across the province, especially in Quang Ngai Town. Banh Xeo: (A kind of rice pancake folded in half and filled with shrimp, meat and peanut spouts) Making Banh Xeo is very easy. This kind of dish is popular in much of the country. However, Banh Xeo in Quang Ngai represents a peculiar taste over the others, especially when it is filled with mushroom. No delicacies prove to be tastier than Banh Xeo that contains some peanut spouts, and is served with raw vegetables and fish sauce mixed with lemon, sugar, hot pepper, garlic. 13. SHOPPING, SERVICES: Quang Ngai Market: lies in the centre of Quang Ngai Town at the intersection of Ngo Quyen Street, Le Trung Dinh Street, Nguyen Ba Loan Street and Nguyen Nghiem Street.
