The purpose of this catalog is to show and describe briefly the popular types of General Electic lamps available for many impo.rtant lighting services. Buyers and Sellers of lamps should lind the catalog of great assistance io determining sizes and types needed and for properly identifying individual lamps. However it is not intended to be used as a source of information for lighting installations. G-E engineering bulletins should be consulted for up-to-date technical data perraining to lighring applications. With the exception of Neon Glow Lamps only lamps classified in the manufacturer's schedules and contracts as "large Lamps" are included in this catalog. For certain services additional lamps class'
i6ed other than "Large Lamps" are also available. For instaoce, thete are available additional lamps for aviation services which are class-

ilied as miniature lamps and are listed in miniature lamp catalogs and schedules. Also additional projecrion lamps classi6ed as photolamps and listed in photolamp catalogs and schedules.

Miniature Lamp and Photolamp (iatalogs and Price Schedules, engineering publicarions and other assistance you may tequire are available from your General Electric Lamp Division Sales Office listed on the back cover.

I
GENERAT ETECTRIC TEADERSHIP
The test of a lamp's quality is how cfliciently it produces light from the current it consumes. The objective of General llectric's extensive research work in lamp design and manufacturiog processes is to make lamps of the highest possible quality - lamps that produce light for industrial, commercial and resideotial uses
at the lowest possible cost,

IN LAMP DEVETOP

To make the best lamp possible for a particular lighting service factories, homes, airports, automobiles, picture projection, any highest skill in one of thousands of applications - requires the Iamp design. Complete specilication of every lamp part must be macle for each type of lamp manufactured. There are at the Piesent rime about 7oo difierent specifications for glass Parts, 200 speciflcations for bases, about 6000 sPecilications for lead-in wires and supports, a countless variety of filament wires and specifcations for more than 200 different chemicals or components. Each specilication, length and diameter of lilament, spacing berween coils, mandrel size and so forth is specified sometimes to a one hundred-thousandth patt of an inch. A lilament which in a single spot is 196 less io diameter (in a 6-watt lamp that is 6remilliontlrs of an inch) than specified, may reduce its life 25%. All specifications, for more than 1o,OO0 different types of lamps, are cootinually reviewed and promptly revised when new data indicates a possible improvemeot that will mean lower cost of lamps, bettel quality of light or lower cost of lighting. Essential also to unifotm high quality in lamps is tbe development of lamp making machinery that will assure consistent accuracy of wattage, life and lumen ratings and all other design features. In this field General Electric has made many notable achievements, each one resulting in a more e6&cient lamp aod a higher standald of quality for all lamps. Comprehensive testing of lamps throughout all phases of manufacture, aod testing of sample finished products in General Electric testiog laboratories as well as by iodependent testiog services ptovides a constaot check on quality and assutes that all established standards are maintained.

G.E FLT]ORESCE]\T LAMP OPERATII{C

There are a number of different methods by which fluorescent lamps may be started and operated. Each method requires the selection of
a particular combination of fluorescent lamp and

operated with starters: 4, 6,8, a^d l3-watt T-5; t5- and 3o-watt T.8; L4, 15,20,25, and 4o-watt T.t2i 90- and loo-watt T-17.

These are the lamps which may be

auxiliary equipment. The choice depends upon lamp -characteristics, aPPlication requirements. and cost versus convenience factors. For example, if lamps are to be operated outdoors in cold weather, only a few types will perform with. best results. There are five principal methods of oPeration. Some lamps may be operated by only one method; some lamps may be operated by more than one. The following describes lhese five operating methods and lists the lamp sizes appropriate

2. Ttigger Start (no starters) This newer method permits operation of

starting. Although lamp life is a little shorter and thus lamp cost a little higher,

some smaller preheat-start fluorescent lamps without starters, yet gives practically instant

each.

1. Prebeat or Slaitcb Startfug Qttitb st4rters or manr.4l starring su,itcbes)

maintenance is greatly simplified and convenience ofuse much improved. No special lamp is required. but the lighting fixture must be equipped with the proper size of Trigger Start ballast. This automatically provides cathode preheat without starters. Trigger Start ballasts are currently ayailable fot 14, 15, and 2o-watt General Line fluorescent lamps and fot 8" atd 12"

circline lamps,

fluorescent lamp cathodes are Preheated before the lamp is started, relatively ioexpensive ballasts may be used. Such preheating is readily accomplished by ineans oimanual switches (used in desk lamps and portable lamps) or by automatic stariers (where 6xtures are controlled from a wall switch). Starters are available in either standard types or reset "Vatch Dog" types and in the range of sizes needed for the different lamps. The "Vatch Dog" is recommended in most instances because it eliminates "flashing" or "blinking at the end of lamp life. saves ballast wear. and lasts much longer.

3. Rdpid Stdrt (no starters) This newest of systems combines the

simplicity of Ttigger Start with the low cost of conventional switch starting. It requires the use of a Rapid Start lamp which uses special low-loss triple-coiled cathodes to reduce cathode heating losses, and is coated with DriFilm to assure r:apid

starting even under adverse conditions, The .lamps should be used with Rapid Start ballasts designed to automatically provide adequate preheat with low losses. Lamps glow as soon as turned on and come up to

The l4-watt T-12 lamp is used for supplementary lighting in stores and industry, It is applied where space does not permit use of the longer 1 5-watt lamp. It has been employed in portable lamps using a low-wattage frlament lamp for a ballast. The 15-watt T-I2 \^mp has a lower bulb-brightness than the
15T8 lamp for about rhe same amounr of light. It is preferred orer the T-8 lamp if used wirhout shielding as is sometimes done for bathroom mirror lighting and some other applications.

Its many uses paralled those of the 15-watt T-8. The 2o-watt T-12 lamp is one of the most widely used fluorescent lamPs. It is employed in home lixtures for lighting in kitchens, bathroorns, basements, and recreation rooms. It is used in window valances and under shelving and cupboards for decorative and utilitarian lighting, It may be used to lighr closets, washrooms and small areas. It is also employed for supplementary lighting in ofiices and factories. In stores it lights frtting mirrors, niches, and wallcase displays. It may be operated by trigger-start ballasts. The 25-stattT-12 33-inch lamp is the longest T- 12 lamp which can be operated from 120 volts a-c with a simple choke ballast. Three-lite lamps with their two filaments provide three levels of lighting. Each filament is of a different wattage and may be lighted individually or in combination with the other.

The 15O-v/att and 300-watt sizes are particularly applicable to lloor, table and wall lamps having fuiing bo* ls because of irs shape and special white diffusing coaring. The 30/loo finds much use in

difusing bowls. l{owever, the 50/15OR/W is especially for use in portable lamPs without difvanity and dresser lamps.

The lower wattage is for decorative or

casual

effecrs. The combined wattage of the two filaments js for use where seeing reguirements are imporrant.

Three-lite lamps are designed for base down operation with the exception of the mogul base 5o/ 15 0-watt size.

Geoeral Electric projector and reflector lamps are self-contained spotlighting and floodlighting units. They are widely used in commercial.

industrial. and home applicarions. Principal advantages are compactness, conveoience, and elimination of reflector deterioration due to dirt. Projector lamps are similar in construction
to_

Reflector lamps have bulbs that are formed by being blown into molds. After frosting. a coating of silver is evaporated onto the inside surface. The beam pattern depends on the reflector contour and the degree of bulb-frost density light frost in the spots and heavier in the floods.
3oo-watt and500-watt reflector lamps are avail" able in heat-resistant glass. This glass, although more expensive, allows higher wattage in the same bulb size and will withstand greater thermal shocks such as from moisture on the hor bulb.

The reflector section, of heat-resistant glais, is formed by pressing in an accurate mol-d. A

smooth coating of aluminum is evaporated onto the inside surfice. To the reflecroi is fused the heat-resjstant glass cover plate or lens. likewise formed by pressing in an accurate mold. Aluminum is used as the reflector because it withstands the high temperature when the lens is fused to the reflector. Beam pattern depends on reflector

A noreworthy General Elecrric development has prorided a method for applying light ftost uniformly to bulbs of heat-resistant glass,

External devicis such as color roundels, louvers, and shields can be clipped directly to rhe PAR-38 bulbs. The R-52 lamps, in 5oo- and 750-watts, are specially designed for high-bay lighting in industrial planti. The contour of the silvered portion of the bulb, and the filament position, are designed for favorable light distribution and shielding. Substantially even illumination results when spacing between units does not exceed mounting height. These lamps are widely used in plants where there is rapid collection of dirt on lighting equipment. They are of special advantage where lighting units can be reached for maintenance only at high cost, or where prodLrction may be interrupted by tying up a craoe. Typical applications are in foundries, railroad car shops, steel mills, and welding shops. Almost no dirt collects on the bottom {ace ofthe R-52, where the light is emitted. The bulb should be protected from moisture.

C-E TRAFFIC SIGLYAL LAMPS

The traffic-signal beam candlepowers recommended by the Institute

of Tlaffrc Engineers are based on the light output of the standard 6o-watt traffic signal lamp. The 67-watt lamp is equivalent in light
output to the 6o-watt lamp and has longer life for group replacement which usually reduces maintenance expense and sigoal outages due to lamp burnouts. The 10o-watt and lll-watt lamps are used where there is high background brightness or where a special hazard may call for a

Filameot forms and support construcrions oflamps in light face type are not exactly as illusrrated bur differ only slightly.

Use of multiple lamps in street lighting is steadily increasing. A multiple street lamp having a certain value of nominal lumens is designed to deliver the same average light ourput throughout life as the series lamp of corresponding lumen rating. Street series lamps, operated on coostantcurrent series circuits, have a slow increase in wattage and Flament temperature thr:oughout life, Hence the light output is maintained throughout life at a high percentage of initial
value.
MULTIPLE STREET LIGHTING LAMPS

Current variations affect sharply the performance of street series lamps. The current in street series circuits should therefore be adjusted as nearly as possible to rated value. The 3O0O-hour street lighting lamps are jntended for group replac(m(nt twice a 1ear. The "standard" (2000-hour series and 1500hour multiple) street lighting lamps are widely used for group replacemenr rhree rimer a year. Code Beacon Lamps are frequently used as obstruction markers on tall structules. The 5o0PS4o/45 rated at looo hours is generally used where lamp replacement is easy. The 3ooo-hour

lamps listed are the basic light sources. For Airplane Landing Lights 42o-statt G-25 bulb lamps are generally used in 10-ioch reflectors located io the leading edge of the wing. Sealed beam type of landing lamps are commonly used on newer aircraft, They are listed in General Electric Miniature Lamp Schedules and

TRAIN LIGHTING Train lighting lamps are specially designed to withstaod the intense vibrations and shocks encountered io this service. In general they are available for operation on either 3O-, 34- or 6o"volt direct current circuits. To insure satisfactoty life, voltage regulating devices must be kept adjusted to the proper voltage so that the voltage at the lamp socket coffesponds with that shown on the lamp marking.

LOCOMOTIVE HEADLIGHTING

The 2OO PAR lamp is of the sealed beam type of the all-glass construction incorporating the filament, reflector and coverglass in a slngle unit. It is cusromary ro operate one lamp for switching locomotives and two for road locomotives. $i/hen applied to Diesel-electric locomotives, fixed resistors are installed in the circuit

to reduce the line voltage to 30 volts,

the loo{2lf3, 32-vok lamp is reiommended

N(here separate reflectors and lamps are used,

These lamps, which are somewhat less rugged and less efhcient than 115-125-volt lamps, are made available for use in the relatively few locations where only the higher voltage is available.

The filaments in high voltage lamps are thinner and longer than those in standard voltage lamps, This results in a lower eficiency as compared with standard voltage lamps.
Due to lack of space only clear lamps are illustrated.

Burning Position

All lamps listed will burn in any position except the H4OO-A1 and 81. These lamps are desigoed to operate within 10" of the vertical, the Al for base up and the 81 for base down burning. Horizontal oper:ation of the H4OO-A1 requires a magnetic deflectiog device; rated lumens 14,OOO, Horizontal operation of the H4OO-E1 reduces lumen rating to 19,100 lumens with a magnet, 18,600 without a magnet. Similady, the H25O-A5 rating is reduced to 1o,6oo and 10,200 lumens. Bulb Shapes The new BT bulb shape has some lamp design advantages and is ioterchangeable with the T-bulb lamp in most existing reflectiog equipments. The new H4OO-Rl and RCl lamps with sealedin reflector have the advantage of maintaining high light output without the necessity of cleaning reflector accessories.

Ultraviolet from the General Electric Ozone Lamp passes through the special glass bulb and acts on the oxygen in the air to form ozone, which has the unique ability to destroy many objectionable odors. The G-E Ozone Lamp will kill the odors in a small room, banish smells in a short time after: cooking, pfevent mustiness, and eliminate stale after-odors oftobacco smoke, Ozone lamps are generally operated in shielded fixtures mounted on the wall iust
