News Brief

Forthcoming releases of Bentleys WaterCAD and WaterGEMS V8i (SELECTseries 4)

Bentley will release WaterCAD and WaterGEMS V8i (SELECTseries 4) versions in early 2013. WaterCAD and WaterGEMS are Bentleys modeling products for the analysis and design of water distribution systems. They are used by thousands of engineers around the world to improve the efficiency and reliability of existing networks and develop new networks costeffectively. Effective with the release of SELECTseries 4, operations-related features will be improved for energy cost and flushing analyses. In addition, a new capability to view hydraulic modeling results in the control room will be available as a technology preview for SCADAConnect users who would like to test it and provide our development team with feedback related to the specific needs of their respective organizations. The SCADAConnect module for WaterCAD and WaterGEMS already enables users to bring operational data into hydraulic models to provide the initial/boundary conditions as well as historical and real-time data to calibrate the model. With the release of the control room capability, water models will be brought into the control room, increasing information mobility across utilities engineering and operation departments. Advance Look at Capabilities and Benefits The new capabilities and benefits users will get from using the V8i (SELECTseries 4) releases are: Operations-related capabilities: These features will help users optimize the efficiency of water distribution systems, minimizing operational costs and improving emergency response. Specifically: o Energy cost improvements will enable users to aggregate energy costs across pumping stations and to compute energy costs using complex tariffs. In addition, non-model-related energy costs will be included. Ultimately, this will help users minimize energy costs in their systems.

o Enhanced pipe flushing analysis will allow users to perform flushing studies with multiple flushing runs and flushing areas, and new flushing reports will be included. These new reports will show the location of valves and hydrants that field staff need to operate when o carrying out their flushing programs. This will help improve users understanding of flushing-related operations. Improved IT performance: Improved hardware and software performance will improve users productivity, especially when working on complex models. Specifically: o The new SQLite database format will solve existing limitations of the MDB format (for example, 2GB maximum file size). In addition, the new file format stores data more efficiently, decreasing database file size by 50 percent on average. o An enhanced interface will include new capabilities, such as background layer and element symbology copy/paste, symbology definition import/export, and property search to filter element properties. This will improve usability and users productivity. o The 64-bit support, already available in WaterCAD and WaterGEMS, to increase addressable memory and performance, will also enable users to run WaterCAD for AutoCAD or WaterGEMS within the 64-bit version of AutoCAD 2013.
