Firefighters mingled with guests & dignitaries at yesterdays official opening of Merritts new $4.74 million Fire Zone office & provincial training facility. The 14,300 sq. ft. building brings not only improved facilities to Merritt, but a new addition to the valleys architectural inventory. The building design is contemporary & functional, featuring full-height windows and exciting new wood construction technology cross laminated timber panels and glue-lam components for a bright, open & highly flexible space. It will house Merritts 58 Wildfire Mgt Branch staff, and with its proximity to the airport, can be quickly transformed into a full Fire Centre if needed. The Training Centre expects to host 300-500 trainees per year. And the spring boot camps will return to Merritt in 2014. The property is leased by the Prov Govt from the City of Merritt for 25 years, with an option to renew for another 25. Last year's reality TV hit Highway Thru Hell debuted its 2nd season of winter on the Coq, this week on Discovery. The show follows Jamie Davis and the crew of his heavy-rescue company.
