Selection defined-

Selection is the process of choosing final candidates who best fit the job requirements. Why careful Selection is important? Selecting the right employees is important for three main reasons as described belowPerformance: Employees with right skills do a better job for the company. Cost: Cost is another factor that explains the importance of selection. Cost of hiring a wrong person may be damaging for the company. Legal obligations: Law requires the best selection process in two ways. First, equal employment laws require non-discriminatory selection procedures for protected groups such as minority groups. Second, court will impose fine if they find the employer liable when employees with criminal records are selected. Basic testing conceptsA test is basically a sample of a persons behavior. Using a test assumes the device that is both reliable and valid. Reliability: It is a tests first requirement and refers to its consistency. A reliable test is one that yields consistent scores when a person takes two alternative forms of the test or when he/she takes the same set on two or more different occasions. Many things could cause a test unreliable. If a person scores 90 on an intelligent test on Monday and 130 on the following day, then it could be said that the test is not very reliable. Validity: A test should not only be reliable, but also valid. Validity tells the employer whether the test is measuring what they think it is supposed to be measuring. The validation stepsThe validation process consists of five steps as follows-

Analyze the job. Choose the test . Administer the test. Relate the test score and criteria. Cross-validate and re-validate.

Types of selection testsThere are several types of tests that are generally used by the employers. Some of the prominent ones are noted here briefly(i)Test of Cognitive abilities: Such test includes general reasoning ability(intelligence) and tests of specific mental abilities like memory and inductive reasoning. (ii)Test of Physical abilities (iii)Test of Personality and Interest (iv)Test of Achievement Background Investigations and Reference ChecksAlso known as pre-employment history check. The process of investigation about a candidate about his/her character, criminal records and employment history from different authorities. All the information collected about the candidate must be kept secret and must not be used for any other purpose by law. Honesty testingThe process of testing a candidates honesty and reliability. Usually such tests are done for the jobs that require honest and reliable candidates such as the jobs in police force, staffs for mint press etc. Some of the examples of such tests are1. The Polygraph 2. Paper and pencil 3. Graphology 4. Physical exams 5. Substance abuse Screening
