Carlos Rodriguez : If she likes to try to go

Interview with Li Nas coach

to the top 4, the only way that she can make it is to take more risk and one more step and try to run more to the net to win the points and not to wait that the other player miss. She has to be the person to risk to go to the net and win the matches. Du Jie Xinhua: To be more aggressive? Carlos Rodriguez: Exactly, yes. Lets say that she is an aggressive player from the base line. But I need more than that. That is not enough. Today she needs not much but a little bit more engagement to the net to bring her game a little bit more aggressive and a little bit more speed in her game. put pressure and to try to take an extra

Du Jie Xinhua - How is Li Na preparing for the US Open? Carlos Rodriguez: Quiet well, we have spent already 2 weeks together and we are going to spend another 5 days until next Wednesday (July 31). She is doing very well and she worked very hard. She felt a little bit tired today but it is part of the job to try to push her a lot here and when she goes to the competition. She is going to feel fresher and everything is easier than here. Thats the point Du Jie Xinhua: This year in Wimbledon, Li Actually at her quarter final, she came to the net 71 times and won 48 points. Was that a strategic change? Na had come to the net more often.

Du Jie Xinhua: She also played Womens Double at the earlier stage of her career. Will that help her?

Carlos Rodriguez: Its a little of affection Carlos Rodriguez: Lets say that in the beginning of her career it could be interesting but today it is not necessary for her because its going to take more energy to her. She needs to keep all energy to play the singles. Du Jie Xinhua: At the age of 31, how long do you think Li Na can keep her high level of performance? and feelings in a tennis match because you have many times between 5,000 and 15,000 people looking at you and as soon as you do something, people react to this and communicate with a ball and racquet and communicate with you. dont have any question that she can do at least the next year without any problem athletes on tour today. Now it depends on her. Her desire to continue, because she is for me, one of the best her Carlos Rodriguez: For sure, because you have determination. If you have strong personality, you are ready to take the responsibilities and decisions by yourself in a very difficult or stress moment. The player needs feelings to be sensible to feel what is best to do in a tension moment but at the same time have to be with a strong

willingness, her passion to continue, to perform and if she likes to continue to play and to work a lot harder next year Du Jie Xinhua: You have also said before that a tennis player without personality How to understand it? and emotions is not a real tennis player.

You also said when

William sisters and Sharapova plays; they are not only just hitting the balls. There is something extra. What is that something extra? Carlos Rodriguez: Why everybody takes those people like an icon, because they have something extra than the other ones dont have. They are good when they have to. They play the good shot at the right time and they try to win every point and every single match. They have their attitude and they act as a champion. They hate to lose. They hate to lose, more than they like to win, those players. Thats why and much more. Li Na is in between. She is there. You know she is not that far? As long as she understands that to make this last step, she has to take responsibility and risk to do more and then we will see. Du Jie Xinhua: You also said a champion is both inside and outside the court. Why is that? Carlos Rodriguez: It is a way of living. Its a model of life. When you play tennis at the highest level, your life during that period turns around. Your goals and your profession, which means, from the very

Henin retired for the first time, you told FOX Sports that back then outside of the Williamss sisters and Maria Sharapova. The rest WTA players were still very poor. Do you still think so?

Carlos Rodriguez: Today you have the situation improved but I am still hungry. I still dont see more in order to respect the talent of the player. If you see the top 20, they are huge and very talented young girls but there is still not too much of variation in the game. That is what I say, they can do much better because they have the talent to do it.

Du Jie Xinhua: moment early in the morning when you wake up, until the moment that you go to sleep, all your life is conditioned about what you want to achieve. You eat, you sleep, you behave, you live every single minute of your life thinking about what you like to achieve because you are in the top of the top. If you dont do that, what you want, is difficult to achieve, because the in the first ten up there, all of them do the same. Du Jie Xinhua: We also know that Li Na has always been straight talking and very candid. Do you like this part of her personality? Carlos Rodriguez: I like those kinds of personalities as long as there is respect. I dont have any problems.

Li Na not only has a

strong personality but also she shows it on court and outside court. I respect, I like it because I am her big fan but some people dont like it. Some suggest her to change it. Do you think it is advisable? Carlos Rodriguez: I dont advise her to change herself because if she changes herself, she is not her anymore. In her position, people are there not to criticize her, is to judge her. The Chinese people like to see Li Na in the match. They dont want to see Li Na play or say how good she plays. They like to go there and see Li Na win. There is no question about it. I go there, I pay my ticket. She must win. Thats a problem, because for her, she works very hard and she doesnt understand. People think it is so easy for me to win. It is not that easy. But the problem is that, at that point you have to understand that the people have paid the ticket, they dont know. They dont judge you because you are good or not. They dont know how to become a tennis player. What a tennis player has to do to perform. How much work is behind all these, they dont know. They paid their way. When you go to the cinema, you

these things come in other ways which dont pay to see a bad movie. Tennis is exactly the same. It is entertainment. People judge you because you are a public person. Everybody can say to you what he wants. It is the price that you have to pay. Du Jie Xinhua: We know on court, Li Na sometimes is fighting with herself not just the opponent. How are you trying to help her out of this obsession? Carlos Rodriguez: It is the most difficult thing to deal with, because it is certain habits that are already there & difficult to put it away. But at the same time, I think that she has to understand that she goes against something that she is never going to change. The disappointment when you play. You cannot repair. Two things can happen in the tennis match. You win one point or you lose a point. When you win the point, you win the point. There is one more coming. You lose the point one more coming. If every time you are going to express yourself like the final point in your life because you win or you lose. It is not possible to play like that. It is not possible to be balanced. The emotions are more difficult in tennis and have to be managed by your mental skills. When

means the emotions drive the mental, the tennis player is lost. Sometimes it is what happened with Li Na. Du Jie Xinhua: Li Na said, after

retirement she would like to open a tennis academy. Do you think the Potters Wheel will cooperate with her or you will help her? Carlos Rodriguez: I am always more than happy to collaborate and help her if I can. There is no question about it

Du Jie Xinhua: Have you discussed about it? Carlos Rodriguez: No. because, lets say that I am never going to talk about that because I respect her career first and it is the priority for me.

today because its too short for the Du Jie Xinhua: You said 13 and 14 are very important age for training young tennis players. How is the Potters Wheel, your academy helping to train these young players? Carlos Rodriguez: It is the most important thing for us. Why I say that because when you have kids 16 or 17 years old, its very difficult to teach them the basics then what I like to do is to bring those 11,12,13 years old even younger we have here 7, 8 years old kids. What I see after 3 years in Beijing is like the way of learning. I think we can do much better. This structure of learning has to be improved. Du Jie Xinhua: How? cultures. Its not the system to teach the cultures how to work with those kids. As long as that not exist, its going to be very difficult to build a new era with Li Na or good players. Its going to be very tough. Du Jie Xinhua: We have also seen, over the years more international tournaments have been introduced to China and more tennis courts are being built across the country but still the young generation of Chinese players can rarely be seen in WTA matches or ATP matches. Carlos Rodriguez: My point is, promote tennis, and instruct cultures and development of the elite tennis player. These three things, if you dont have that, its very difficult to build a long term project. You can have Li Na, Peng Shuai, Zheng Jie once in a while, but for a country like China. You have to be able to have at least 10 or 20 players like in the United States 10 to 20 players in the top Carlos Rodriguez: Lets say that, at least, you have to be able to have instructive cultures, real cultures to teach kids at 7, 8 until 14 years old is a very difficult work to do. In China you dont have these skills 100 for girls and boys. No problem.

for percentages, playing deep and hard, playing short and angled off an angle shot, playing deep for percentages off angled shots etc. Goal of Drill: It improves several tactical options on playing crosscourt specially how to play or counter angle shots. Drill Variations: Players could also work on winning the point on right balls to the other side of the court. They can also do that on a command from coach which also challenges and improves their instant decision making. Drill 8: Inside out and inside in winning forehands Player stands behind a target which is placed on the left side of the center mark. From this position he tries to step to the left side and make a jump/adjustment final step to play an inside out or inside in winning forehand. He then runs to the target and steps back to play the next ball. Goal of Drill: This drill specially improves the ability of player on covering the baseline with aggressive forehands as well as winning the point from baseline.

Cont. from July Issue By Amir Borghei Drill 6: Winning the point from baseline In this drill different number of balls, considering the type of surface, the patterns used, etc. are fed to player in a row and he is asked to play a forceful winning forehand on any right ball from anywhere on court. Goal of Drill: The drill improves the tactical concepts of playing in neutral as well as offense situations while playing on the baseline. Drill Variations: As an appropriate drill for encouraging all round play, instead of playing a winner forehand, player approaches the net off a well placed forehand and continues to try different patterns from mid court and at the net. Drill 7: Playing deep and angled

Goal of Drill: Starting the drill from near Drill Variations: Player could be asked to run quickly to the net after playing the forehand in order to play a winning volley and covering the net area. Drill 9: Passing the net player Coach stands close to the net and feeds the ball to player anywhere on the baseline. Player plays a forehand or backhand to coach and then tries to pass the coach off his volley. Goal of Drill: This pattern specially improves the ability of player to make a quick pass off the opponents volley. Drill Variations: Considering the situation, different options should be given to player and worked on including: hard and low DL or short and angled CC passing shots as well as offensive topspin lob. Approach and at the net drills: Drill 10: Forehand and backhand volleys Player sets on to hit a FH volley while staying just inside the service line and takes some steps backward before setting on to hit a BH volley. the service line simulates a real match situation where player approaches the net off baseline. This pattern also encourages the forward movement after split step. Drill Variations: 1) Players could start behind service supposed from the line. to

Player is now play a 1st. volley from the service line area which is followed by another volley at the net. 2) Adding the choice of playing a smash while working on the net area is also important. Drill 11: Mid court + Volley Standing away from service line, player returns a high bouncing ball on FH or BH side and approaches the net to win the point with volley. Player then steps back to repeat the pattern from another side. Goal of Drill: The drill is specially used as a hard court preparation pattern which encourages more aggression as well as winning more points at the net.

Player tries to hit aggressive drive volleys Drill Variations: Playing a drive volley on high balls from the midcourt area could be especially advantageous for girls and young juniors as it may promote for a more aggressive play at the net. Drill 12: Winning volleys at different directions With one player standing at the net on one side of the court, his partner on the baseline returns the fed ball forcefully to the player at the net who should use the speed of the coming ball to direct and finish the volley on the other side of the court. He then tries the same practice on the other side. Goal of Drill: This drill is especially useful to train proper positioning at the net as well as improving the ability of player on how to use the speed of coming ball to place the volley. Drill Variations: To create a more open situation, player could direct the first volley toward the partner and win the point off the second shot. Drill 13: Drive volley from midcourt area off the racket or hand fed balls by coach. Goal of Drill: It is especially useful for girls as well as young juniors who may lack enough strength to volley the ball when playing far from net. Drill Variations: To improve the all round skills of junior players, you can mix up balls at different heights and depths as well (e.g. half volleys). Drill 14: Two on one at the net In this drill one player works on his net game and encounters the other two players on the baseline. Goal of Drill: This two on one drill, especially on a short distance, improves the player's reflex and maneuverability which is important while playing at the net as well as on return of serve. Drill Variations: Playing short and angled winning volleys after some deep exchanges or stepping backward to play a smash, etc. or other match simulating options. Serve Drills:

one Drill 15: Serve Two or four players serve to different targets on both service boxes. Goal of Drill: To maintain and improve different types of serves (especially directed wide and down the T serves). Drill Variations: 1) Counting the serves inside the determined target areas. This is especially important to create the similar match situation and emphasize the serve percentage. 2) In some cases one player would be asked to work on his returns and this is especially important when player can not serve because of injury or feeling pain when serving. Drills for junior players: Drill 16: Forehand and backhand + Shadow drill With two players standing behind the baseline, both take steps to the right side with one playing a forehand and the other

players move to left side with one player playing a backhand and the other one shadowing the stroke. Goal of Drill: The drill keeps the junior players motivated and active even when they dont play the ball, and on the other hand, moving and shadowing the stroke without ball gives them the opportunity to master their different movement patterns as well as technical skills (FH & BH). Drill Variations: After working on lateral movements, players can work on forward and backward movements where they hit the short and deep & high bouncing fed balls. Drill 17: Forehand and backhand volleys + Shadow drill With two players standing 2/3 meters inside the service line, both take appropriate adjustment steps to play a forehand volley (with one playing the ball and the other shadowing the stroke). Then they step backward and move again to play a backhand volley (with one playing the ball and the other shadowing the stroke).

or other combinations simulating the real Goal of Drill: The drill keeps the junior players motivated and active even when they dont play the ball and on the other hand moving and shadowing the stroke without ball gives them the opportunity to master their different movement patterns as well as technical skills (FH & BH volley). Drill Variations: Different variations of volley could be worked on through this drill (low volleys, high volleys, drop volleys, etc.) Drill 18: Approach and at the net Player stands 3 meters behind the service line and plays the first shot with his forehand and approaches the net to play a backhand volley. He then gets back behind the service line and plays a backhand which is followed by a forehand volley at the net. Goal of Drill: The focus of drill is on approach shot as well as moving forward to cover the net area. Drill Variations: Playing a forehand followed by a forehand volley and a backhand followed by a backhand volley situation can expand the skill range of junior players. Choice of playing smash could be added as well.
