PROGRAM PENSISWAZAHAN GURU AMBILAN KHAS JAN 2013 PROJECT ASSIGNMENT COURSE CODE/NAME OF COURSE: TSL 3105 TEACHING LISTENING AND SPEAKING SKILLS IN THE PRIMARY ESL CLASSROOM

LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of teaching listening and speaking skills (1.2, 2.3) 2. Interpret the syllabus and select listening and speaking skills (1.3) 3. Select, create and evaluate materials for developing listening and speaking skills (2.1, 6.1) 4. Plan and teach lessons to develop listening and speaking skills (2.2, 4.5) 5. Use appropriate types of assessment/feedback in the teaching of listening and speaking to children (2.4) 6. Give feedback on microteaching (4.1, 7.2) The project aims to fulfil learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, and 4. PROJECT OBJECTIVES: To enable students to: 1. read critically and select appropriate information from various sources on the teaching and assessing of listening and speaking skills in the primary ESL classroom; 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. design an appropriate graphic organiser to present information; select listening and speaking skills in the KSSR/KBSR English Language Syllabus; select and adapt suitable instructional materials for teaching and learning of listening and speaking skills; write lesson plans according to the curriculum specifications of the English Language primary school syllabus; conduct a lesson on teaching of listening and speaking skills with appropriate skills, strategies and techniques. reflect critically on the microteaching and link it to the principles of teaching listening and speaking.

TASK 1 (Sourcing and presenting information- 20%) Groupwork PPG TESL Ambilan Khas Jan 2012 / Sem.3 TSL3105 2

a. In groups of 4/5, source information on listening and speaking skills (definition, aims, purposes, models of teaching listening and speaking skills, approaches to teach listening and speaking skills, techniques of assessing listening and speaking skills, samples of activities in teaching listening and speaking skills, etc.); lesson planning and selection of teaching/learning resources for teaching listening and speaking skills from books, magazines, journals and the Internet. b. Read and select FIVE articles (on different topics) from a variety of sources. (Provide evidence of reading by highlighting, underlining etc. of articles. Submit these articles.) c. present the information in the form of short notes in suitable graphic organiser(s). TASK 2 (Lesson plan, teaching / learning resources 30%)- Individual Select listening and speaking skills in the KSSR /KBSR English Language Syllabus. Based on the skills selected prepare a 60-minute lesson (20%) for a mixed ability class. Include the relevant teaching / learning resources for the lesson (10%).

TASK 3 (Implementation of lesson plan - 30%) Individual a. Select one lesson plan from a member in your group. Adopt or adapt the lesson plan selected(optional), which you will use for microteaching (include the teaching-learning resources). b. Carry out microteaching of the groups selected and revised lesson plan (20%). c. Provide feedback on other groups/peers microteaching.

TASK 4 (Teaching/learning resources used during the microteaching 20%) Groupwork Submit all the teaching/learning resources that your group used during the microteaching.
