Waitaki Girls put end to Craigheads hopes

Andrew Voerman
The Craighead first XVs defence of the Aoraki secondary schoolgirls rugby title ended when they lost 29-14 to Waitaki Girls High School on Wednesday evening at Alpine Energy Stadium. Craighead played well and led 14-10 at halftime but Waitakis size advantage took its toll on them in the second half and they sealed the win with a try on fulltime. Fullback Lily McFarlane and centre Georgia Urquhart scored tries for Craighead. Coach Barry Fairbrother praised Urquharts strong defensive effort and the tidy game of Ellie Lott at first-five. Mary Engelbrecht toiled hard in the forwards and Zoe Mulcahy, who usually plays hooker, had a good game in her first outing at halfback. Fairbrother said it was great for his young team to make it to the semifinals, after losing 14 players from last years side. The young girls really showed up and were quite proud of that. Waitaki will play Ashburton College in next weeks final.
