Contact Information: Office Location: ACB-210 Schedule of Office Hours: TBD Office Phone: 909-621-8209 Email Address: tom.horan@cgu.edu Course Description: This practicum course represents a unique opportunity to research and design a social technology system that utilizes social media, learning systems, and related technologies for use by executives in arts leadership. The course will focus on the design and implementation of learning technologies for use by the Getty Leadership Institute. Students will review theories and concepts of executive learning as well as relevant learning management and content management approaches to fully online and blended learning. Based on these efforts, students will contribute to the design of a web-based system that will be used here at CGU. The practicum is open to students from a variety of backgrounds, and technical knowledge on social media and technologies is not required. This course is the second of two social technologies practicums being sponsored by the Getty Leadership Institute. (The first practicum occurred in Spring, 2013.)

Prerequisites: Consent of instructor. Objectives for Student Learning (Course and Program):
Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of IST 381, students: Will have an in-depth understanding of the Lean Startup methodology. Will master the use of leading social and learning technologies. Will understand and experience means for designing social and learning technologies for arts management Will be able to assess user needs for social technology for the arts and design approaches to creating new systems. Will be able to communicate the value of social technology systems within the arts community. Graduates have communication, interpersonal, and team skills Graduates are prepared to be leaders in Arts Management and Social Technologies Field Graduates can integrate IS & management foundations Graduates have perspective on design of systems Graduates are able to think analytically and creatively Graduates have required career-specific skills

Course Requirements: Participation (40%): Students are expected to come prepared to participate in each weeks class meeting. This preparation will include conducting original research, reading assigned readings, reviewing materials, and working on assigned projects. Each weeks requirements will be discussed in class the week before it is due. Students will be graded on a scale of 0 to 3 for each weeks participation.

Journal Reports (40%): At the end of each module, the student will be required to submit a journal report which reflects upon the progress in the class so far. The instructor will provide direction for the main topic of the reflection. The reflection should be two pages, double-spaced. There will be four journal reports, worth 10% each. Final Deliverables (20%): The overall goal of this course is to develop a working application for the Getty Leadership Institute. The overall quality of the final deliverables created by the class will be a key indicator of the success of the class. Module 1 Review of existing research and requirements In this Module, we will address the question: What is it that we need to do? This will be done by reviewing the work completed by the previous class (IST 381 Spring 2013) and materials provided by GLI and the instructors. Week 1 Date 9/3 In Class Introductions, Review course requirements. The Lean Startup overview. Overview of MLI work completed last semester and MLI course in Canvas. Module 2 MVP 1 (Set up MLI in Canvas) In this Module, we will review the Canvas application and learn how to use and extend it. We will then prepare the first MVP. Week 4 Date 9/24 In Class Discussion of Journal 1. Discussion of blended learning. Blended learning discussion. Student presentations of Canvas courses. Discussion on extending Canvas. End of Module Assignments: 1. MVP 1 As a class, we will present our MVP to the stakeholders and ask for their feedback. The presentation will consist of two primary components: 1. A slide presentation which summarizes the key features and concepts in the MVP. 2. A demonstration of the MVP which includes sample students, instructors, and all features that we considered part of the MVP. We will ask the stakeholders to spend time reviewing the MVP and then solicit their feedback for the following weeks class. 2. Journal Report #2 Write a two-page paper that addresses your thoughts on how the first MVP met your expectations. Be prepared to discuss in class 10/29.

Module 3 MVP 2: Canvas and WordPress In this Module, we will continue working on the MVP in Canvas and begin putting together the Wordpress part of the deliverables. Module 4 Creation of final deliverables In this Module, the class will work together to the final deliverables: a Canvas site for MLI 2014 and a WordPress website for GLI that integrates with Canvas and has social components.
