Case Study No. 4: Global India: Kerala, Israel, Berkeley

This eye-opening exhibition unveils for the rst time the complete and extensive holdings of The Magnes documenting the history of the Jewish community in Kerala, South India, many of which have never been seen before. The Magnes Collection includes hundreds of ritual objects and textiles, Hebrew books, photographs, archival records and manuscripts in Hebrew, Aramaic, Malayalam, English, and Judeo-Spanish. These materials illustrate the history and the customs of one of the oldest communities in the Jewish Diaspora, following its development until its immigration to Israel in the 1950s.

Spanning the twentieth century and following the paths of Jewish migration, this is the rst exhibition to highlight landscape art from The Magnes collection, offering a new look at the artists relationship with the sites and spaces they inhabited. From Western European Impressionism to Eastern European Realism, from Romanticism of the Americas to Modernism of Israel/Palestine, images of the land were created at the intersection of pictorial traditions and ideological values. Included in the exhibition are nearly thirty works by such artists as Max Liebermann, Jacob Nussbaum, Robert Falk, Moshe Mokady, and Maurycy Minkowski.

Keepers of the Lost Ark: Behind the Scenes at The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life
Designed for students during UC Berkeley Welcome Week, this behind-the-scenes tour will reveal the many unique resources and events that are available for teaching, study and personal enrichment. Visitors may even get to see a Lost Ark or two.

American Jerusalem: Jews and the Making of San Francisco

Special Tour of Global India: Kerala, Israel, Berkeley with Barbara Johnson
Join us on a guided tour of the exhibition with Dr. Barbara Johnson (Professor Emerita, Ithaca College), a renowned anthropologist specializing in Kerala, who served as a consultant on the exhibition. Currently a Visiting Scholar in South Asia Program at Cornell University, Johnson is the author of Oh Lovely Parrot!: Jewish Womens Songs from Kerala (2004) and Ruby of Cochin: An Indian Jewish Woman Remembers (1995).

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13, 11-4 PM

The rst lecture, The Ancestral Law, will focus on what it meant to be a Ioudaios in the Maccabean crisis and ask how the Torah came to be the denitive touchstone of Judean identity. The second lecture, Non-Mosaic Judaism, will examine whether there were forms of Judean identity for which the Law of Moses was not the denitive criterion and consider three test cases: the colony of Judeans at Elephantine, the wisdom literature prior to Ben Sira, and the early Enoch literature. In his third and nal lecture, Apocalypticism and Torah, Professor Collins will consider how the traditional understanding of the covenant was modied when it was supplemented by claims of a higher revelation in the apocalyptic literature. Orchestra of Exiles explores the 4-year odyssey of prodigious Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman in the founding of the orchestra that would become the Israel Philharmonic. Litquake: Thaisa Frank

A reading by awardwinning author Thaisa Frank. Heideggers Glasses is Franks startling, surreal debut novel. Part love story and part historical ction, Heideggers Glasses evocatively reconstructs the landscape of Nazi Germany from an entirely original and haunting vantage point. Co-presented with UC Berkeley Extension and Litquake, San Franciscos premier literary festival since 1999.
