(1) There are 12 towns grouped into four zones with three towns per zone. It is intended to connect the towns with telephone lines such that every two towns are connected with three direct lines if they belong to the same zone, and with only one direct line otherwise. How many direct telephone lines are required? (a) 72 (b) 90 (c) 96 (d) 108 (e) 120

Solution: Since every town in same zone is connected to each other by 3 lines each, so total lines in any one zone = 9. There are 4 such zones, so total = 4*9=36 Now, any two towns in different zones are connected by a single line, so, number of such lines = 27+18+9 =54 (From Zone 1 to Zone 2,3,4 + From Zone 2 to Zone 3,4 + From Zone 3 to Zone 4) Total lines=36+54=90 Hence, choice (b) is the right answer (2) If logx/log10 - logx/log10 = 2log10/logx, then a possible value of x is given by (a) 10 (b) 1/100 (c) 1/1000 (d) 100 (e) exactly two of the foregoing

Solution: logx/log10 - logx/log10 = logx/log10 = 2log10/logx => (logx)^2 = (log100)^2 => log x = log 100 or logx = -log100. Hence, choice (e) is the right answer (3) ABCDEF is a regular hexagon. Points P and Q are on AB and CD respectively such that AP/BP = CQ/QD = 3. What is the ratio area(BPQC)/area(ABCDEF)? (a) 5:24 Solution: considering the length of hexagon as 4. just extend AB and DC to meet at G. Now area of BPQC = area(GPQ) - area(GBC) = 1/2*5*7*sin60 - 4sqrt(3) =19/4*sqrt(3) area of hexagon = 6*4sqrt(3) and hence the ratio 19:96 Hence, choice (c) is the right answer (4) The set M consists of p consecutive integers with sum 2p. The set N consists of 2p consecutive integers with sum p. The difference between the largest elements of M and N is 9. Then p is (b) 11:54 (c) 19:96 (d) 5:27 (e) 7:32

(a) 17 Solution:

(b) 36

(c) 9

(d) 27

(e) 21

Let the first term of series M and N is a and b respectively For the series M we have, (a+1) + ... + (a+p) = p(2a+p+1)/2 = 2p For the series N we have, (b+1) + ... + (b+2p) = p(2b+2p+1) = p Also, b+p-a = 9 Solving we get, b = -p, a= -9, p = 21 Hence, choice (e) is the right option (5) The angle between the hour and minute hands of a standard 12-hour clock is exactly 1 degree. The time is an integral number n of minutes after noon (where 0 < n < 720). The total possible values of n is/are (a) 3 (b) 2 (c) 1 (d) 4 (e) 0

Solution: The angles of the minute, hour hands are 6n, n/2 degrees, so we want 11n/2 = 360k +/- 1 for some k. Hence, n = 65k + (5k +/- 2)/11. Since 0 < n < 720, we have 0 < k < 11. Also 5k = 2 or -2 mod 11, so k = 4 or 7, giving n = 262 or 458. Hence, choice (b) is the right option (6) Let f(x) + f(2x) + f(1+x) + f(2-x) = x for all real x. Then f(0) is (a) -1/4 Solution: As f(x) + f(2x) + f(1+x) + f(2-x) = x , putting x=0 f(0)+f(0)+f(1)+f(2)=0.....1 putting x=1, f(1)+f(2)+f(2)+f(1)=1, f(1)+f(2)=1/2 => f(0)= -1/4 Hence, choice (a) is the right answer (7) A vessel contains milk and water in the ratio 3:2. The volume of the contents is increased by 50% by adding water to this. From this resultant solution 30 L is withdrawn and then replaced with water. The resultant ratio of milk to water in the final solution is 3:7. What is the original volume of the solution? (a) 60 L Solution: (b) 70 L (c) 80 L (d) 90 L (e) 120 L (b) -1/8 (c) 1/4 (d) -1/2 (e) 1/8

-4-

Let milk be 6x, water be 4x => After adding water we get milk = 6x, water = 9x 30 L mixture is drawn out from 15x => 15x - 30L is left => milk = 6x-12, water = 9x - 18 This is replaced with 30 L water => (6x-12)/(9x+12) = 3/7 => x = 8 Hence, choice (c) is the right option (8) Vidya has to call her friend Arati, but she doesn't remember Arati's phone number. She has two options, first to try calling Arati directly and in case she doesn't get the number right she could try the second option of calling up Divya, another friend of her who would in turn give Twinkle's number who finally give her Arati's number. Alternatively, Vidya can try the second option first. Given Vidya needs to minimize the total number of calls she has to make, what should be the minimum level of certainity that Vidya should have regarding the number she already has so that it would be advisable for her to try the first option before the second? (a) 25% (b) 75% Solution: Let x be the certainty of Vidya to try first option before the second. Suppose she calls Arati and gets his number then he makes x calls or he fails in which case he makes (1-x)*3 + (1-x) calls. WHY? To opt for second option would take him 3 calls. => x + 4(1-x) <= 3 => x >= 1/3 Hence, choice (c) is the right option (9) A solid sphere of radius 3 cm is lowered into water contained in a cylindrical vessel of radius 6 cm until it is completely immersed. Find the level by which the water in the vessel will rise. (a) cm Solution: The sphere has volume as 36*pi cubic cm, the cylinder has volume as pi*36*h cubic cm => h = 1 Hence, choice (b) is the right option (10) ABCD is a rectangle and the perpendicular dropped on diagonal BD from A, when produced intersect CD at X. If AB = a, BC = b, then DX = (a) a^2/b (b) b^2/a (c) a^2/(a+b) (e) none of the foregoing Solution: (d) b^2/(a+b) (b) 1 cm (c) 4/3 cm (d) 2/3 cm (e) 2 cm (c) 100/3% (d) 200/3% (e) 50%

Let AX and BD intersect at P. So angle DAX = angle BDC So, DX/AD = BC/CD So DX = b^2/a. Hence, choice (b) is the right answer (11) If |b| 1 and x = -|a|b, then which one of the following is necessarily true? (a) a xb < 0 Solution: a-xb = a+|a|b^2 which is >= 0 Hence, choice (b) is the right answer (12) A lecture room has a rectangular array of chairs. There are 6 boys in each row and 8 girls in each column. 15 chairs are unoccupied. How many distinct pairs of (row, column) can this lecture room have? (a) 4 (b) 2 (c) 6 (d) 3 (e) 5 (b) a xb 0 (c) a xb > 0 (d) a xb 0 (e) a > b

Solution: xy 15 = 6x+8y => (x-8)*(y-6) = 63 => 5 such pairs of (x, y). Hence, choice (e) is the right option (13) Consider two different cloth cutting processes. In the first one, n circular cloth pieces are cut from a square cloth piece of side s in the following steps: the original square of side s is divided into n smaller squares, not necessarily of the same size; then a circle of maximum possible area is cut from each of the smaller squares. In the second process, only one circle of maximum possible area is cut from the square of side s and the process ends there. The cloth pieces remaining after cutting the circles are scrapped in both the processes. The ratio of the total scrap cloth generated in the former to that in the latter is: ( = circumference of the circle/diameter of the circle) (a) 1:1 Solution: Take n = 4 and verify. Choice (a) is the right option (b) 2:1 (c) n(4-)/(4n-) (d) (4n-)/n(4-) (e) 1:2

(14) The remainder when x^100 (x > 0) is divided by x^3 + 1 is (a) x^2 + x + 1 Solution: x^100 = Q*(x^3+1) + R => on putting x^3 = -1 on both the sides we get -x = R, but remainder can not be negative, thus we add divisor i.e. x^3+1 to get R => R = x^3-x+1. Hence, choice (c) is the right option (15) Two stations A and B are 920 km apart. A train T1, which stops for 5 minutes in every town-station and for 3 minutes in every village-station started from A with a speed of 60km/h towards B and at the same time a train T2 with a speed of 80km/h which does not stop in any intermediate station started from B towards A. They met at C which is 560 km away from B. If the number of town-stations between A and C is less than the number of village-stations, then at least how many stations - town or village - are there between A and C? Assume T1 stops only at town or village-stations. (a) 12 Solution: As the train T2 covered 560km, both trains travelled for 7 hours, but T1 travelled only 360 kms. => Halting time = 60 minutes Let the number of town-stations be x and number of village stations be y, x < y => 5x + 3y = 60 => x=3, y=15, x=6, y = 10, or x=0, y = 20 => least is 16 Hence, choice (c) is the right option (16) What is the area enclosed by the graph of |x - 60| + |y| = |x/4|? (a) 120 Solution: |x-60|+|y|=|x/4| => for x=60,y=+-15 => for x<60 and x>0 and y=0 x=48 and for x>60 and y=0 x=80... so the enclosed area is a triangle above x-axis and its mirror image below x-axis... whose area =2*0.5*15*(80-48 ) = 480 Hence, choice (d) is the right answer (17) In a triangle PQR, PQ = QR, S and T are points on PR and PQ respectively such that RQ = QS = ST = TP. Then <PTS (in degrees) lies in the range (b) 240 (c) 360 (d) 480 (e) 720 (b) 13 (c) 16 (d) 18 (e) 20 (b) x (c) x^3 x + 1 (d) 2x^2 1 (e) -x

(a) (75, 90) (b) (105, 120) (e) none of the foregoing

(c) (135, 150)

(d) (120, 135)

Ignore this question. There were typos in it. (18) a, b, c, d, e, f, g are non-negative such that a+b+c+d+e+f+g = 1. Then the minimum value of max(a+b+c, b+c+d, c+d+e, d+e+f, e+f+g) is (a) 1/3 Solution: Since there are 3n-2 terms, put a=d=f=1/3 Hence, choice (a) is the right option (19) Let the length of common tangents when two circles cut each other at a right angle be x. The length of common tangent when these two circles are separated so as to touch each other is (a) 2x Solution: Let C C' be the centres and r and r' be the radii then we can see x^2 +(r-r')^2= CC'^2 ....as the Circles touch orthogonally...CC'^2 = r^2 + r'^2...=> x^2 = 2rr' second case) Let L be the length of the tangent now L^2 + (r-r')^2 = (r+r')^2 => L = sqrt(2)x Hence, choice (a) is the correct option (20) If a/(b+c) + b/(c+a) + c/(a+b) = 1, then (a^3 + b^3 + c^3)/abc is (a) 0 (b) 1 (c) -3 (d) 3 (e) none of the foregoing (b) (2+1)x (c) 3x (d) (3+1)x (e) (5+1)x/2 (b) 3/7 (c) 1 (d) 0 (e) none of the foregoing

Solution: a(c+a)(a+b) + b(b+c)(a+b) + c(b+c)(c+a) = (a+b)(b+c)(c+a) a^3 + b^3 + c^3 + 3abc = 2abc =>(a^3 + b^3 + c^3)/abc = -1. Hence, choice (e) is the right option

(21) Nokia maufactures mobile handsets and marks a price which is 8 times the manufacturing price, and prints it on the handset. They sell it to a distributor at a certain discount. The distributor then sells it to the wholesaler and offers him a discount equal to 3/4th of the discount that he received from the manufacturer. The wholesaler then sells it to the retailer at a discount equal to 2/3rd of the discount he received from the distributor. The retailer finally sells it to the customer at a discount equal to 1/2 the discount that he received from the wholesaler. If all the discounts are given on the price printed on the box and if the wholesaler made a profit of 50%, then who made the least profit? (a) Manufacturer (b) Distributor not be determined Solution: printed price = 8*MP(mp= manufacturing price) CP of manufacturer = MP CP of distributor= 8*MP- d(d= discount) CP of wholesaler =8*mp -(3/4)*d CP of retailer = 8*mp -(1/2)*d CP of customer =8*mp- (1/4)*d.... so, as given wholesaler made a profit of 50% (c) Wholesaler (d) Retailer (e) can

therefore, (8mp - (1/2)d)-(8mp-(3/4)d) --------------------------- =(1/2) 8mp -(3/4)d

solving it gives d=(32/5)mp so, CP of distr. =1.6mp(sp of manufacturer) cp of wholesaler= 3.2mp......(sp of distr.) cp of retailer =4.8 mp.......(sp of wholesaler) cp of customer =6.4mp........(sp of retailer)

-9-

clearly, everyone made a profit of 1.6mp except manufacturer who made a profit of 0.6mp Hence, choice (a) is the right answer (22) Given a set of n rays in a plane, define a reversal as the operation of reversing precisely one ray and obtaining a new set of rays. If all the rays are reversed after 42 operations, then n can be (a) 21 Solution: For a ray to get back to its original orientation, it require even # of operations. Since, all the ray get reversed after 42 operations and let there be k rays => 2n+k = 42 => k has to be even. Hence, choice (d) is the right answer (23) Quadrilateral ABCD is inscribed in a circle with diameter AD = 4. If sides AB=BC = 1 , then CD equals (a) 5/2 Solution: Direct application of ptolemy's theorem ab*cd+ad*bc = ac*bd cd+ad=ac*bd let cd=x x+4=root(16-x^2)*root(15) x=7/2 Hence, choice (e) is the right option (24) A task is assigned to a group of 11 men, not all of whom have the same capacity to work. Every day exactly 2 men out of the group work on the task, with no pair of men working together twice. Even after all the possible pairs have worked once, all the men together had to work for exactly one day more to finish the task. What is the number of days that will be required for all the men working together to finish the job. (a) 11 (b) 21 (c) 33 (d) 12 (e) none of the foregoing (b) 4 (c) 3 (d) 5 (e) 7/2 (b) 23 (c) 41 (d) 24 (e) At least two of the foregoing

Solution: Each man will work 10 days with 10 diff. man + 1 more day with all men. So, total days a man worked = 11 therefore, 11days*(1/M1+1/m2+...+1/M11)work/day = 1

work, where, M1=no. of days first man will take to finish the work alone. M2=no. of days 2nd man will take to finish the work alone. Clearly, if they all work together, they will take 11 days to finish the work Hence, choice (a) is the correct answer (25) Let x = (n^4 + 256 + 4n(n^2 + 16))/(n+4)^2. If 4 <= n^2 <= 49 then, (a) 12 <= x <= 147 (d) 12 <= x <= 95 Solution: (n^4 + 256 + 4n(n^2 + 16))/(n+4)^2 = n^2 4n + 16 Max(n^2 4n + 16) is at n = -7, Min(n^2 4n + 16) is at n = 2.
