Letter from the President

Friday, August 30th, 2013 Re: Year in Review and Notice of 2013 Annual Meeting To the General Members of YouthCan For International Dialogue (YFID), The 2013-2013 year saw a great deal of innovation occur within the International Diplomatic Engagement Association (IDEA) network. Most notable was the division of the annual G8 & G20 Summit into the respective Y8 Summit in London, United Kingdom and the Y20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Y8 Summit, hosted by our partner organization Youth Diplomatic Service (YDS) in the United Kingdom, saw one of the largest gatherings of youth officially endorsed by a G8 Presidency. Given the nature of the topics at hand, YDS wisely invited observer nations, as well as individuals representing international organizations. For the first time in IDEA history, the African Union was present. The eight Canadian delegates selected actively participated in their respective committees, and contributed to the final communiqu, available here: http://www.youthdiplomaticservice.com/2013-final-communique.html. The Y20 Summit, hosted by our partner organization J8 Club Russia, took place at the site of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). After two days of deliberations, the following communiqu was adopted: http://www.g20.org/news/20130619/781489723.html. The head of our Canadian delegation ultimately had the opportunity to share the proposals with the President of the Russian Federation, Vladmir Putin. Delegates were further invited to participate in the Business 20 Summit and several SPIEF sessions. Following the recruitment of our strongest delegations yet, the time has come for YFID to begin operations for the upcoming year. Our mission is simple: to engage future leaders in fruitful dialogue about international policy and diplomacy. Though the Y8 and Y20 Summits have long been the focus of YFID, we seek to expand our operations domestically and internationally in the coming year. In doing so, we intend to lay down solid foundations from which to expand. As such, the date for our online Annual Meeting has been set for Sunday September 15th, 2013. On this occasion, existing General Members will have the chance to vote into effect a new set of by-laws, as well as to elect new Directors for the 2013-2014 year. For those interested in joining YFID for the first time, applications for General Member status, as well as for Director and Vice-President positions, are due no later than 11:00 PM (EST) on Sunday, September 8th, 2013. A more detailed schedule will be posted shortly, and applications will soon be available on our website (www.yfid.org), as well as on our Facebook page. I urge you to contact me if you have any further questions. On behalf of the YFID Executive, Chloe Reis President, YouthCan For International Dialogue
