Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost Holy Communion (ELW 4)

Lectionary 22 August 31st and September 1st, 2013

THE ORDER OF WORSHIP PRELUDE WELCOME CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may stand and make the sign of the cross, the sign with which we are marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Adagio from Toccata, Adagio, and Fugue J. S. Bach

INTRODUCTION Invited and invitingthat is the nature of the church. By God's grace in holy baptism we have a place at the banquet table of the Lord. When, by the power of that same Spirit, humility and mutual love continue among us, the church can be more inviting still. CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags and childrens bulletins are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed. An usher will gladly provide you with assistance. As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service. We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so that we may record your presence with us. PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW O God, give us grace to set a good example to all among whom we live, to be just and true in all our dealings, to be strict and conscientious in the discharge of every duty; pure and temperate in all enjoyment, gracious and generous and courteous toward all; so that the mind of Jesus Christ may be formed in us and all may know that we are his disciples; in whose name we pray. Amen.

In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sin and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Please sit or kneel as you are able. Silence is kept for reflection. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. O God, you resist those who are proud and give grace to those who are humble. Give us the humility of your Son, that we may embody the generosity of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Please be seated A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN FIRST READING: Jeremiah 2:413

Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel. 5Thus says the LORD: What wrong did your ancestors find in me that they went far from me, and went after worthless things, and became worthless themselves? 6 They did not say, "Where is the LORD who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that no one passes through, where no one lives?" 7 I brought you into a plentiful land to eat its fruits and its good things. But when you entered you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination. 8 The priests did not say, "Where is the LORD?" Those who handle the law did not know me; the rulers transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal, and went after things that do not profit.

Therefore once more I accuse you, says the LORD, and I accuse your children's children. 10 Cross to the coasts of Cyprus and look, send to Kedar and examine with care; see if there has ever been such a thing. 11 Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for something that does not profit. 12 Be appalled, O heavens, at this, be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the LORD, 13 for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and dug out cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns that can hold no water. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Silence for reflection on the reading.

PSALM: Psalm 81:1, 1016 Refrain:

Tone:

Sing with joy to | God our strength and raise a loud shout to the | God of Jacob. 10 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the | land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and | I will fill it. 11 Yet my people did not | hear my voice, and Israel would | not obey me. 12 So I gave them over to the stubbornness | of their hearts, to follow their | own devices. R
13

Oh, that my people would lis- | ten to me, that Israel would walk | in my ways! 14 I would quickly sub- | due their enemies and turn my hand a- | gainst their foes. 15 Those who hate the LORD would | cringe in fear, and their punishment would | last forever. 16 But I would feed you with the | finest wheat and satisfy you with honey | from the rock." SECOND READING: Hebrews 13:18, 1516

Let mutual love continue. 2Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. 3Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being

tortured. 4Let marriage be held in honor by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. 5Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, "I will never leave you or forsake you." 6So we can say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?" 7 Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. 8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. 15Through him, then, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. 16Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Please stand and sing:

Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely. 7 When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. 8When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; 9and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, 'Give this person your place,' and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place. 10But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, 'Friend, move up higher'; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. 11For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." 12 He said also to the one who had invited him, "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. 13But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. 14And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous." VERSE:

Take my yoke upon you, and | learn from me;* for I am gentle and hum- | ble in heart. (Matt. 11:29)

We confess our faith, the faith of the Church, with the Apostles Creed. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and

The congregation remains standing for the blessing of labor. ANNOUNCEMENTS THANKS FOR AND BLESSING OF LABOR PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Friends in Christ. Today we give thanks to God for the work we and others do in our sundry callings and we pray that our labor at home and away from home will contribute to the well being and building up of others, to the praise and glory of God. May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us--yes, establish the work of our hands. (Psalm 90:17) Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. (Colossians 3:23) The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Blessed are you, O Lord our God, ruler of the universe. You made the whole earth for your glory; all powers come from you, and all creation praises you. We lift our voices to join the songs of heaven and earth, of things seen and unseen. We give you thanks, O God, for the power you have put into our hearts, and hands, and minds, and we ask you to bless our labor, that it may bear fruit in good and strong households, families, and communities. Give meaningful work to those who are unemployed or underemployed, and give them courage, peace, patience, as they await this blessing. Give the retired continuing joy and satisfaction in their ongoing prayers and support for their communities. Grant us faith to know your gracious purpose in all things, and continue your blessings to us through the bounty of your creation; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. The service concludes: In the course of the silence after each bidding, the people offer their own prayers, either silently or aloud. Confident in God's compassionate rule and enduring love, let us pray for the church, the world, and all of creation. The congregation may kneel or sit for prayer God of mercy, hear the prayers of your people, and answer us according to your steadfast love; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. PEACE The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you always. And also with you. OFFERTORY SENTENCES Through Christ let us continually offer to God the sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his Name. But do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Hebrews 13:14, 15 Let us with gladness offer our lives and the fruit of our labor to the Lord. COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK Monday, September 2, 2013 Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig, bishop, renewer of the church, died 1872 Grundtvig was one of two principal Danish theologians of the nineteenth century; the other was Sren Kierkegaard. Grundtvig's ministry as a parish pastor had a difficult start. He was officially censured after his first sermon, though he did receive approval a year later to be ordained. He served with his father for two years but was unable to receive a call for seven years after that. In 1826 he was forced to resign after he attacked the notion that Christianity was merely a philosophical idea rather than God's revelation made known to us in Christ and through word and sacrament. This belief would be a hallmark of Grundtvig's writing. He spent his last thirty-three years as a chaplain at a home for elderly women. From his university days he was convinced that poetry spoke to the human spirit better than prose. He wrote more than a thousand hymns, including "God's Word Is Our Great Heritage" (ELW 509).From Sundays and Seasons.com. Copyright 2013
