emerging as another conservative that the liberal press loves to hate. "In six short weeks since he became the junior Texas GOP senator," says Politico, "the no-nonsense freshman has quickly become a lightning rodon issues ranging from guns to Chuck Hagel's nomination for defense secretaryupending the Senate's conventional ways, in which freshmen typically work quietly to build bridges with their colleagues." "In just two months," notes the Times, "Mr. Cruz, 42, has made his presence felt in an institution where new arrivals are usually not heard from for months, if not years. Besides suggesting that Mr. Hagel might have received compensation from foreign enemies, he has tangled with the mayor of Chicago, challenged the Senate's third-ranking Democrat on national television, voted against virtually everything before himincluding the confirmation of John Kerry as secretary of stateand raised the hackles of colleagues from both parties." Mr. Cruz campaigned as a tea party conservative and has voted accordingly since being elected. Imagine that. Yes, he asked for more financial records from Mr. Hagel. So did 24 other senators, including GOP firebrands like Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine. Yes, he voted against raising the debt ceiling. So did 34 of his colleagues. And yes, he was one of only three senators who opposed Mr. Kerry, which only proves that Texans didn't elect a lemming. Freshman Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts spent last week slamming her Republican colleagues as "fundamentally wrong" for trying to make the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau more transparent and accountable. Where are the articles describing her sharp elbows and indifference to working "quietly to build bridges"? Could it be that the media criticism of Ted Cruz has little to do with how long he's been in office and mostly to do with his conservative views?
