Outline of the Undergraduate International Course Program of Global Engineering

A new international course in the Undergraduate School of Global Engineering is being offered since April 2011. All classes are provided in English. The field of global engineering perceives civil engineering problems on a global scale, including environmental issues and natural resource concerns. The course aims to cultivate human resources capable of designing and managing civil infrastructures while considering global environmental issues around urban and regional areas, particularly in Asian and African countries. This international course is offered through K.U. PROFILE. This course is a 4-year program leading to a Bachelor of Engineering degree. In the first and second years, students are required to take classes in fundamental mathematics and physics, and also liberal arts. Scientific English and basic Japanese classes are also available. From the second year, specialized civil engineering classes begin, including classes in environmental engineering and earth resources, and energy science. For the first three years, all classes will be offered at Yoshida Campus, the main campus of Kyoto University. In the fourth (final) year, students with sufficient credits will be able to join a research group and may relocate to one of the universitys other nearby campuses, such as Katsura Campus or Uji Campus. Many of Kyoto Universitys civil engineering related laboratories moved from the main campus to Katsura Campus in 2006. The campus is renowned for its excellent research environment and experiment facilities. Each student will undertake research for their bachelor thesis at his/her designated laboratory. The thesis must be presented and examined in February of the final year, in order to graduate in March. Kyoto Universitys many international partnerships with institutions overseas provide students with opportunities to undertake study and research not only in Japan, but also in other countries. A credit transfer system will be made available for students who wish to study outside of Japan for a certain period. After completing this course, it is recommended that students continue their research in the masters and doctoral programs. New masters programs are also launched by the Graduate School of Engineering, providing further education and research opportunities in English. III Eligibility Requirements for Applicants Applicants must satisfy ALL of the following requirements. (1) Must NOT have Japanese citizenship. [This includes dual citizenship.] (2) Must fulfill one of the following three conditions: a) Have completed or be expected to have completed 12 years of primary to secondary education in a country outside of Japan by March 31, 2013. b) Be in possession of an International Baccalaureate, the German Abitur, or Baccalaureate attained at a secondary education institution abroad. c) Be in possession of an educational background that is equivalent to a). [This must be verified by Kyoto University before proceeding.] (3) Must be 18 years old or older by March 31, 2013. Note:

Individuals who have received most of their education in Japan are required to take the regular entrance examinations to enter the university. Regular students may enroll in the International Courses if their English language ability is deemed sufficient. Those who wish to apply under condition (2)c) above will be subject to a preliminary verification of their educational background prior to having their applications accepted. Submit Form A and a copy of the (expected) Graduation Certificate, to the Admissions Office by E-mail (icp@t.kyoto-u.ac.jp) or Fax (+81-75-753-4855) between June 1 and July 1, 2012. The preliminary verifications will take place on July 6 and will be based upon the documentation submitted. Each applicant will be notified of their eligibility by e-mail before the end of July. [The application documents must reach the office no later than 17:00 (JST) on August 31, 2012.] Note: [National Standard Test] Applicants who reside in the countries where the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) administered by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) is offered are strongly recommended to take it on June 17, 2012. Examination scores for Mathematics (Course 2), Physics and Chemistry are required. Note: The name of the individual making the payment must be the same as in his/her passport, and be in the order of (Family Name), (First Name), (Middle Name). Furthermore, add ICP to the end of name to indicate application to the International Course Program, e.g. Smith John Paul ICP. If the name of the individual making the payment is not the same as the person applying for entry to Kyoto University, indicate the name of the applicant in the Message to Payee space. Once the application fee has been paid, it will not be refunded under any personal circumstances.

(3) Copy of Passport

Copied page(s) must include the applicants name and photograph, the passport number, place of issue and expiry date. If the applicant does not have a passport, a copy of their official photo ID and its English translation are also acceptable. (An English translation by the applicant is acceptable.)

(4) Certificate of Health

Use the attached designated form (Form D). If the same examination items as Form D are included, any format is acceptable. The certification must be issued in English by a medical doctor based on a medical examination conducted less than three months prior to the date of application. Please refer to sample Form D on the website of International Course in advance.

(5) Transcript of Academic Record

The Transcript of Academic Record should cover the applicants entire high-school or higher education (if applicable) and be issued by the head of the school to which the applicant currently belongs, 6

and/or from which he/she has most recently graduated. If the transcript of the academic record is not in English, both the original and its English translation must be submitted. (The translation may be provided by the applicant.) (6) Graduation Certificate The graduation certificate must include the applicants name, date of birth, entrance date and (expected) graduation date. If the high-school does not have an official format for graduation certificates in English, please use the attached form (Form E). (7) Score of TOEFL or IELTS Use the attached designated form (Form F). Applicants must arrange for the official score report of TOEFL or IELTS to be sent to Kyoto University directly from ETS or the British Council. Therefore, applicants are strongly encouraged to take the TOEFL or IELTS well in advance of the deadline. TOEFL An original Examinee Score Record must be submitted (no copies). Applicants are also required to order an Official Score Report to be sent from the ETS to the Admissions Office before applying for the International Course Program. The scores of either the TOEFL-iBT (Internet-Based Test) or TOEFL-PBT (Paper-Based Test) are acceptable. The minimum requirement is 61 for the iBT and 500 for the PBT. The institution code number for Kyoto University is 9501. There are no specific code numbers for faculties. The score is valid only if the examination date is after July 1, 2010. IELTS An Official Test Report Form must be submitted to the Admissions Office by the British Council, and must reach Kyoto University by August 31, 2012. A minimum IELTS Overall Band Score of 5.0 is required. The score is valid only if the examination date is after July 1, 2010. (8) Essay (Personal Statement) (9) Copy of Examination Voucher for EJU Applicants must write a short essay (1000 words maximum) that answers the question of Why do you wish to study Civil Engineering? A copy of the Examination Voucher for the EJU (Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students), must be submitted. The required examination subjects are Mathematics (Course 2),

Physics and Chemistry. Kyoto University will be notified directly of the score results from JASSO - examinees will be identifiable by their number shown on the copy of the Examination Voucher for the EJU. (Applicants need not submit their EJU score by mail.) EJU scores are valid only if the examination date is after July 1, 2010 (such as the 2nd EJU which took place in November 2010). (10) Score of the National Standard Test for University Admission A copy of the results of the National Standard Test and its English translation must be submitted, if the score record is not written in English. (An English translation by the applicant is acceptable.) The scores for Mathematics (for the science courses), Physics and Chemistry are required. The score is valid only if the examination date is after July 1, 2010.

Selection Method and Announcement of Results

The selection procedure will be in two parts. The first screening stage will involve an examination of the submitted documents, which are the candidates scores in English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. In the selection procedure, points will be allocated for each subject as follows: English 200 conversion from the TOEFL or IELTS scores Mathematics 200 conversion from the EJU or the national standard test scores Physics 100 conversion from the EJU or the national standard test scores Chemistry 100 conversion from the EJU or the national standard test scores Total 600 8

If only General Science is provided in the candidates national standard test, and Physics and Chemistry cannot be selected individually as is the case with the Chinese national standard test, the score of General Science containing questions in physics and chemistry will also be accepted. In this case, the score of General Science will be allocated 200 points. The result of the first screening will be notified to each applicant on September 7, 2012. Applicants who do not pass the first screening will be refunded part of their application fee on their request. For applicants who pass the first screening, a second screening will be carried out. This second stage will be an evaluation of the applicants aptitude, and will be based on the essay (see page 7) and an interview. Expected locations for interview are as follows; China (Beijing, Shanghai), Vietnam (Hanoi), Korea (Seoul), Indonesia (Jakarta), Philippines (Manila), Kenya (Nairobi), and Egypt (Alexandria). If there are applicants from other countries than the list above, interviews may be also conducted in their countries of residence. As the Administrative Office will be in contact by E-mail to arrange this interview, it is the applicants responsibility to check their mailbox during this time. The examination results will be announced by postal mail on October 10, 2012. The list of successful applicants registration numbers will also be posted on the universitys website at 12:00 JST (GMT+9) on October 10, 2012, and can be accessed from the webpage of the International Course Program at the following address: http://www.s-ge.t.kyoto-u.ac.jp/int/en Any inquiries relating to the examination results will not be accepted. However, all applicants must have an active E-mail address to enable quick communication during the admission process.

Enrollment Procedures for Successful Applicants

(1) Admission and tuition fees Admission fee: 282,000 yen (tentative) Tuition fee: 267,900 yen for Spring Semester (535,800 yen per academic year) (tentative) Note: The amounts quoted above are tentative and may be revised at the time of enrollment. The admission fee must be paid by November 7, 2012 to obtain the Acceptance Letter for Admission, which is essential for visa application. If the successful applicant pays the admission fee by the designated date, the university will subsidize him/her with an equivalent amount of money in the form of a study grant after enrollment. Exemption or deferred payment of the tuition fee may be granted in certain circumstances.

Successful candidates can apply for exemption or deferred payment of the tuition fees after enrollment. In some cases, students who experience financial difficulties may be eligible for a full or half tuition waiver (based on their academic performance). (2) Details of enrollment procedures, for example documents to be submitted, method of payment of the admission fee and so on, will be provided to the successful applicants with the notification of examination results. (3) Successful applicants are asked to inform the office immediately if they decide not to enroll. (4) Successful applicants must be able to provide for their admission and tuition fees and living expenses in Japan.

Scholarships, Accommodation and Life in Kyoto

The university provides study grants to cover the cost of the admission fee as mentioned above. The university and the alumni association of civil engineering related departments provide scholarships for students who have superior grades. Various kinds of other scholarships can be applied for after enrollment. The university reserves dormitory rooms for all first-year students of this international course. The rent will be reasonable, based on current rental prices in Kyoto. Comprehensive support by English-speaking staff will be provided to international students to assist them with their living and studying needs in Kyoto.

IX Curriculum In the first three years of the course, all the classes will be given at Kyoto Universitys Yoshida Campus (Main Campus). First and second year students will primarily study subjects covering the liberal arts and the fundamentals of the natural sciences. The number of specialized subjects increases substantially in the second semester of the second year. Second and third year students must therefore concentrate on studying a wide range of specialized subjects in the civil engineering fields. In the fourth (final) year, those who have earned a sufficient number of credits will join one of the civil engineering research groups at Katsura Campus, Yoshida Campus or Uji Campus, and will begin the research project for their bachelors thesis. The thesis must be submitted and presented in February of the final academic year. Once the thesis is successfully completed, students will graduate in March.

As mentioned above, all classes will be offered in English. However, the university would like to encourage students to learn the Japanese language and study Japanese culture in order to make their stay more fruitful and to enhance their future opportunities. For this purpose, the university also provides a number of classes related to Japanese language and culture. Further Studies at the Graduate School level

The Graduate School of Engineering at Kyoto University provides the following postgraduate educational programs: a masters-only program (Masters Program) and a program linking the masters with the doctoral program (the Integrated Master's-Doctoral Program). The Masters Program offers fundamental classes in various selected fields. Students learn how to conduct their own research for their theses. This is an educational program for students who hope to work as researchers or highly skilled engineers in corporations and research institutes. The Integrated Master's-Doctoral Program is intended for students aspiring to earn a doctoral degree and work as researchers in their fields. The students who finish the Masters Program can also continue their studies in the Integrated Master's-Doctoral Program. Two masters programs in the civil engineering field, have been provided in English since April, 2011 as follows: International Course in Management of Civil Infrastructure in the Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering International Course in Urban and Regional Development in the Department of Urban Management The Advanced Engineering Education Center, newly established in the Graduate School of Engineering, also offers the Interdisciplinary Engineering Program, an integrated masters-doctoral program spanning several fields of study, in which all classes are provided in English. The following course integrates the fields of city governance, city infrastructure management, health risk management and disaster risk management, and aims to contribute to the fulfillment of basic human needs and facilitate sustainable recovery from environmental pollution and disasters. Admission Policy

Philosophy and Objectives The Kyoto University Faculty of Engineering emphasizes the building of a solid foundation for learning, under the tradition of a liberal academic environment. A liberal academic environment is one in which students are encouraged to view the world free of preconceptions by garnering a scientific eye. This entails the development of a critical attitude toward academia, and serves as a solid foundation for learning. It is widely thought that the focus of an engineering faculty is largely on applied technologies. However, Kyoto Universitys unique approach differs from this general perception and is somewhat unique. In short, the Kyoto University Faculty of Engineering adheres to its principle academic approach, which is based on a belief that a deep understanding of the basics will be essential for applying technologies to a wide variety of situations in the future. During the first and second years after enrolling as undergraduate in the Kyoto University Faculty of Engineering, students take general education courses common to all science course students. They are also required to take liberal arts, as well as English and/or other foreign languages. At the same time, department/program specialization begins from the first year, gradually increasing in weight. In the fourth year, students begin a special research project on a specific theme, and are assigned to their chosen laboratory where they are able to conduct their studies in a cutting-edge environment together with graduate students and supervising academics. Students who continue on to graduate school receive a more advanced level of specialized education and research guidance. Through this approach to education, the Kyoto University Faculty of Engineering has consistently turned out gradates who are capable of applying their expertise to a broad range of activities, independently and creatively tackling entirely new challenges, and who possess a deep knowledge base and strict sense of integrity.
