WASHINGTON vs. BOISE STATE HUSKY STADIUM AUG. 31, 2013 7:05 P.M. PT (FOX SPORTS 1) THE HEAD COACH: A new era of Washington football begins this fall when the newly-renovated Husky Stadium opens its doors on Aug. 31. The 93-year old legend has undergone a thorough rebuild that will make it one of the grandest, most beautiful sports venues in the nation. With the new stadium come heightened interest and energy around the Husky program as the Dawgs look to springboard into yet another era of on-field successes. Poised to take them there is fifth-year head coach Steve Sarkisian, who has assembled the pieces on offense and defense, in recruiting and now in facilities and infrastructure to put the Huskies back on top. Since arriving at the UW after the 2008 season, Sarkisian has taken the Dawgs from their lowest of lows to three bowl games in his four seasons. Now his task is to continue that upward movement. In 2012, the Huskies posted a 7-6 overall record, going 5-4 in Pac-12 play, despite facing one of the nations most rigorous schedules, which included a sevengame stretch that included matchups with five teams ranked in the top 11 in the AP poll. Washington posted a pair of memorable victories over top-10 foes, beating 8thranked Stanford, the eventual Pac-12 champs, 17-13, on a Thursday night in Seattle. In the eighth week of the season, the Dawgs handed seventh-ranked Oregon State its first loss of the season, 20-17, in another down-to-the-wire win. For the season, the Huskies made considerable strives on defense, cutting nearly 100 yards and more than 11 points per game off of its per-game average from the previous year. On offense, the UW had its fourth straight season with a 1,000-yard rusher as sophomore Bishop Sankey ran for 1,439 yards. The 2011 season, Sarkisians third as head coach, provided more highlights for his up-and-coming program. The Husky offense posted one of its most prolific seasons ever, scoring 434 points over the course of the season, the most by a UW squad since the 1991 national championship team and the second-most in school history. The Huskies scored nearly 12 more points per game than they did the previous year. They also had marked improvement in passing yards (65 more yards per game) and total offense (47 more yards per game), while the teams third-down percentage improved vastly over the previous season, from 32 to 46 percent. In 2010, Sarkisians second season in Seattle, the Huskies made another clear step forward. The Dawgs went 7-6 overall and finished third in the Pac-10 Conference with a 5-4 record. Then, in the Holiday Bowl, Washington provided one of the bowl seasons top games, beating an 18th-ranked Nebraska squad, 19-7. The win over the Cornhuskers was the last of a series of exciting, gutsy victories in 2010. The season included three Husky wins decided on the very last play of the game (Oregon State, USC and Cal), plus another in which the winning score came inside the final minute (WSU). Sarkisian was introduced as the new head coach of the Washington football team on Dec. 8, 2008. From the start, Sarkisian made it clear that he didnt think it would take long to turn the program around and get it back to the high level of success that UW football has enjoyed throughout its history. In his first season, 2009, he seemed to prove that he was right. Washington, which posted a winless season for the first time in school history the year before Sarkisian signed on, surged to a 5-7 record in 2009, an improvement of five victories over the previous year. No BCS-conference school in the nation could boast such improvement in terms of wins in 2009. And, Sarkisians Husky squad pulled off that feat against a schedule that included 10 opponents who ended the season bowl-eligible. Sarkisian came to the UW with a wealth of experience as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. His string of success is nearly unprecedented as, during his time at USC, he coached two Heisman Trophy winners and oversaw one of the nations most consistent and dominant offenses. Sarkisian spent 2007 and 2008 as the Trojans assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. He had also previously served as assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach (2005-06), quarterbacks coach (200203) and as an offensive assistant (2001) at USC, for a total of seven seasons there. During his seven seasons as a member of the Trojans staff, the team posted a combined 74-15 record. As offensive coordinator, his record was 22-3. Aside from his various roles at USC, Sarkisian also spent one season as quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders in 2004 and as QBs coach at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., in 2000, his first coaching job. Sarkisian starred at the quarterback position at the prep, collegiate and pro levels. After his standout career at Brigham Young University, he was played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League for three seasons (1997-99). He had a record-setting two-year (1995-96) career at BYU, playing under legendary coach Lavell Edwards. Sarkisian completed 549-of-824 passes (66.6 percent) for 7,755 yards and 55 touchdowns in his career. His 162.0 career passing efficiency rating ranked third on the all-time NCAA list. As a senior in 1996, he led the nation in passing efficiency (173.6, No. 7 all-time) as the Western Athletic Conference champion Page 2

Cougars went 14-1 and won the 1997 Cotton Bowl. He was the WAC Offensive Player of the Year in 1996, and earned second-team All-America honors. Sarkisian transferred to BYU from El Camino Junior College, where he played two seasons (1993-94). He was a first-team Junior College All-America selection as a sophomore and earned allconference honors in 1993. He also played baseball at El Camino in 1993. He originally enrolled at USC as a baseball player, spending the fall of 1992 on the Trojans roster. Sarkisian was a standout football and baseball player at West Torrance (Calif.) High. He earned his bachelors degree in sociology from BYU in 1997 after receiving his associates degree from El Camino in 1994. Sarkisian was born March 8, 1974. WASHINGTON vs. BOISE STATE HUSKY STADIUM AUG. 31, 2013 7:05 P.M. PT (FOX SPORTS 1) COACHING STAFF: Washingtons assistant coaching staff welcomed just two new members in 2013 as former graduate assistant Jordan Paopao was elevated to tight ends coach and legendary Husky quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo returned to Montlake to coach quarterbacks. Offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau also made a move, switching from quarterbacks to receivers coach (while maintaining his coordinating duties). Nearly all of the UWs nine full-time assistant coaches have some sort of tie to the Northwest and many played for then-Pac-10 football programs. The offensive side of the ball is led by second-year assistant Kiesau, who came to the UW from California. A former QB at Portland State, Kiesau had spent the previous decade at either Cal or Colorado. Idaho grad Dan Cozzetto is in his fifth season as the UWs run game coordinator and offensive line coach. Cozzetto grew up in Spokane, Wash., and was also the Washington line coach in 2003. He came to the UW from Arizona State. Paopao, who played at San Diego, had spent the previous two years as a GA at Washington, is the son of former BC Lions assistant coach Tony Paopao. Assistant head coach, running backs coach and special teams coordinator Johnny Nansen is a fifth-year coach at the UW. He grew up in Long Beach, Calif., but played football at Washington State and spent the previous five years at Idaho before moving over to the UW. The defensive staff saw no changes after the 2012 season. Coordinator Justin Wilcox grew up in Junction City, Ore., and spent four years as a defensive back at Oregon. He came to the UW from Tennessee and, prior to that, coached at Boise State, among others. His former college roommate, Peter Sirmon, oversees the UW linebackers. A four-year starter at Oregon and a native of Walla Walla, Wash., Sirmon played in the NFL for seven years before moving on to coaching. After stints at Central Washington and Oregon, he worked with Wilcox at Tennessee before coming to Seattle. The defensive backs coach is Keith Heyward, a four-year letterman at Oregon State. An L.A.-area native, Heyward has coached at OSU six of the last seven seasons. Defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator Tosh Lupoi had spent his entire playing and coaching career at California before moving to the UW this in 2012. A former Cal defensive lineman, hed coached the line at his alma mater the last four years after two seasons as a GA. Washington has four new graduate assistants: former Husky wide receiver DAndre Goodwin, Kenyon Blue, Connor Knowles and Danny Razore. VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDELINE: While the Huskies full-time coaching staff includes just one UW graduate (Marques Tuiasosopo), nearly all of them have some tie to the state or to the Northwest and a surprising number have actually played for their alma mater against the Dawgs. Head man Steve Sarkisians only loss in a 14-1 season as a senior at BYU in 1996 came to the UW at Husky Stadium. Defensive coaches Justin Wilcox and Peter Sirmon both faced the Huskies during their playing careers at Oregon from 1996 to 1999. Former Washington State linebacker Johnny Nansen, now the Huskies running backs coach and special teams coordinator, was on the opposite sideline for several Apple Cups in the early-to-mid 1990s and new defensive backs coach Keith Heyward played in a few barnburners vs. the UW for Oregon State from 1997 to 2000. More recently, defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi squared off with the Huskies during his time as a d-lineman at California at the start of the last decade. And while offensive line coach Dan Cozzetto ever faced Washington during his career at Idaho, he grew up in the Evergreen State (Spokane), while tight ends coach Jordan Paopao spent some of his childhood living in Vancouver, B.C., when his dad coached with the BC Lions of the CFL. Finally, new offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau has also never played against Washington, but did play his college football just across the border at Portland State. HUSKIES vs. BRONCOS HISTORY: Odd as it may seem at first glance, Washington and Boise State have faced one another only twice in the two schools' history, with those meeting coming in the second game of the 2007 season and in last season's MAACO Bowl Las Vegas. It's odd because the two campuses are located only about 500 miles from one another. The only other Division I-FBS colleges located inside a 500-mile radius of the UW are Washington State, Idaho, Oregon and Oregon State. However, all four of those other schools are (or were) in the same conference as Washington for many years, whereas Boise State only began playing football as a four-year institution in 1968 and only moved up to Division I-A prior to the 1996 season, when the Broncos moved from the Big Sky to the Big West. Here's a recap of the two UW-Boise State games in history: September 8, 2007 Husky Stadium WASHINGTON 24, #22 BOISE STATE 10 The Huskies, behind redshirt freshman quarterback Jake Locker, improved to 2-0 with a 24-10 victory over Boise State, who came into the 2007 season off of a 13-0 campaign in 2006, one that was capped by the thrilling Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma. The Huskies never trailed as they snapped the Broncos' 14-game winning streak. Locker, who had led the UW to a win in his college debut the previous week at Syracuse, ran for a six-yard touchdown to cap the first drive of the game. Later in the first quarter, tailback Louis Rankin tossed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Quintin Daniels to stake Washington to a 14-0 lead. BSU took advantage of a Locker fumble and drove 44 yards in just two plays, scoring on a run from Taylor Tharp, to cut the lead to 14-7. However, after a Ryan Perkins field goal, the Huskies turned the tables as defensive end Greyson Gunheim intercepted Tharp. Three plays later, Locker hit Marcel Reece with a 58-yard touchdown to stretch the Husky advantage to 24-7. Kyle Broztman hit a 40-yard field goal late in the second quarter to make it 24-10, but that was all of the scoring for the day. In the second half, each team had a field goal blocked and threw an interception in enemy territory. The Broncos were held on downs having gotten to the Husky five-yard line late in the fourth, and then, after getting the ball back, the game essentially ended on another Tharp interception. Locker led both teams in rushing, carrying the ball 16 times for 84 yards and a score. He also completed 13-of-25 for 193 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Reece led the UW receivers with 192 yards on four catches. Tharp finished 29-for-47 for 285 yards, three interceptions and no passing TDs. December 22, 2012 Sam Boyd Stadium, Las Vegas #20 BOISE STATE 28, Washington 26 Boise State won its third straight MAACO Bowl Las Vegas, but had to work much harder than in its previous two as the Broncos edged Washington, 28-26. BSU kicker Michael Frisina kicked his fifth field goal of the day, a 27-yarder with 1:16 remaining, to seal the win. Boise State overcame an game-MVP performance from Husky tailback Bishop Sankey who rumbled for 205 rushing yards and another 74 through the air. Washington had trailed by as wide a margin as 18-3 in the second quarter before Sankey and Keith Price rushed for TDs before halftime, cutting the gap to 18-17 at the intermission. In the third quarter, the teams traded touchdowns (with the UW missing a two-point try) to leave BSU with a two-point lead at 25-23. In the fourth quarter, Husky kicker Travis Coons hit a 38-yard field goal with 4:09 left to give Washington its first lead of the day, but Boise got a long kick return to lead ot Frisina's winning boot. WASHINGTON-BSU TIES: Not surprisingly, given the geography, there are some strong ties between the UW coach Boise State coaching staffs. Most notably, perhaps, is that Husky defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox spent four seasons (2006-09) in the same role under current Broncos coach Chris Petersen. That also means that Wilcox was on the BSU staff that faced Washington in 2007 and coached alongside a number of the current members of the Broncos staff. Wilcox also began his college coaching career as a grad assistant in 2001 and 2002. Conversely, BSU secondary coach Jimmy Lake coached at Washington in 2004, under Keith Gilbertson. BSU quarterbacks coach Jonathan Smith, who was a prolific opponent as a QB at Oregon State in the late 1990s and early 2000s, coached at Idaho alongside UW assistant Johnny Nansen. UW offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau coached at Colorado alongside BSU associate head coach Chris Strausser and d-line coach Andy Avalos (under former Boise State head man Dan Hawkins) and also worked with BSU defensive coordinator Bob Gregory at Cal, where Husky d-line coach Tosh Page 3

TEAM NOTES
Lupoi was also a player, GA and assistant coach during Gregorys tenure. Strausser and Petersen also coached at Portland State when Kiesau played for the Vikings in the mid-1990s. Additionally, Petersenn was on the staff at Oregon from 1995-2000, during with both Wilcox and UW linebackers coach Peter Sirmon were starters for the Ducks. As for players, the Husky roster doesnt currently include any Idahoans. Boise States roster includes two players who prepped in Washington: redshirtsophomore Marcus Henry (Bellevue) and senior Kirby Moore (Prosser). Henry is one year older then Husky o-linemen Jake Eldrenkamp and Michael Kneip, who also went to Bellevue, as did UW freshman Sean Constantine. Other players who prepped together: UWs Colin Tanigawa and BSUs Chaz Anderson (L.A. Loyola); UWs Sean Parker and BSUs Bryan Douglas (Narbonne); UWs Cyler Miles and BSUs Beau Martin (Denver Mullen); UWs Derrick Brown and BSUs Tyler Rausa (Vista Murrieta); and UWs Jaydon Mickens and Marvin Hall and BSUs Cleshawn Page (Dorsey). BSU freshman Mat Boeson went to West Torrance High, alma mater of Husky coach Steve Sarkisian. DAWGS VS. THE MWC: Washington has a pretty fair amount of history with the current (2013 season, that is) members of the Mountain West Conference. Washington has played all but three (Colorado State, New Mexico and UNLV) of the 12 schools that comprise the Mountain West Conference in football this season. All totaled, the Huskies are 26-10 against current MWC members, Here's the breakdown: 2-6 vs. Air Force; 1-1 vs. Boise State; 2-1 vs. Fresno State; 3-1 vs. Hawai'i; 1-1 vs. Nevada; 3-0 vs. San Diego State; 10-0 vs. San Jose State; 2-0 vs. Utah State; and 2-0 vs. Wyoming. DEFENSE ON THE RISE: Washington's defense made tremendous improvements in 2012 as compared to the 2011 totals. The Huskies were better on defense across the board, but most notably improved against the pass, where they went from the 116th (out of 120 teams) ranked unit in the nation to the 23rd . Here's a look at where the UW's per-game average and NCAA rank in all of the major team defense categories in 2011 and 2012: 2011 Avg. (NCAA Rank) Rushing Defense 168.69 (76th) Passing Defense 284.62 (116th) Pass Eff. Defense 137.57 (87th) Total Defense 453.31 (106th) Scoring Defense 35.92 (108th) 2012 Avg. (NCAA Rank) 160.08 (61st) 197.31 (23rd) 115.39 (27th) 357.38 (31st) 24.15 (39th) THE PAC-12: Prior to the 2011 season, the Pac-10 Conference added Utah and Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which along with California is one of two schools who have been in the conference since its founding in 1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the other three Northwest schools (Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanford and California. Under current plans, each school will play all five division rivals, plus four of six teams in the other division each season. The first two seasons, the Huskies did not face UCLA or Arizona State. This year, and 2014, the Huskies dont face Utah or USC. CAPTAINS: At the Huskies annual Raise the Woof! preseason celebration, the captains for the 2013 season were unveiled. This season, six captains were selected. On offense, senior quarterback Keith Price (Compton, Calif.), junior tailback Bishop Sankey (Spokane, Wash.) and junior guard Colin Tanigawa (Los Angeles) were honored. On defense, senior safety Sean Parker (Los Angeles), junior linebacker John Timu (Long Beach, Calif.) and junior defensive lineman Hauoli Kikaha (Laie, Hawaii) were selected. Price, Parker and Timu were all captains in 2012 as well. THE 100-YARD FACTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is 184-58-3 (.757) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. Washington was 5-2 such games last season as Bishop Sankey hit the century mark in wins over PSU, Stanford, Cal, Utah and Colorado and loss at Oregon and vs. Boise State. HISTORY LESSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go hand-inhand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards in a game 81 times. The Huskies record stands at 66-14-1 (.821) in those contests. Since 1995, UW is 41-11-1 (.783) when rushing for 200 yards. HUSKY STADIUM RENOVATION: Husky Stadium underwent a major renovation over the last 18 months as the entire lower bowl and south upper deck were demolished and replaced. The new facility features a new, state-of-the-art football operations center (weight room, training room, locker room, meeting rooms, coaches offices) in the west end, much more premium seating options and a new playing surface. Husky Stadium had featured a track up until now, so seats that were once far from the field, particularly in the west end, are much closer to the action. For much more information, including a virtual look from every seat in the new stadium, photo galleries, live construction cams, and more, go to huskystadium.com. HISTORIC HUSKY STADIUM: The Oregon game on Nov. 5, 2011, marked the final game in Husky Stadium prior to major renovations that have now been completed. The 2013 season will mark the 93rd season of play in Husky Stadium. Original construction on the facility was completed in 1920 when Washington played one game in the new campus facility. UWs all-time record in Husky Stadium stands at 357-169-21 (.673). FAMILY TIES: As is the case with most seasons of Husky football, there are a number of players on the Washington football team related to either current or former Huskies. LB Jamaal Kearse is the younger brother of former WR Jermaine Kearse, who now plays for the Seahawks. Junior WR Kasen Williams dad, Aaron was a four-year letterman (1979-82) wide receiver for the Huskies. Sophomore OL Shane Brostek is the son of Husky All-America center Bern Brostek (1986-89). Senior quarterback Keith Price is a cousin of former UW tailback Jelani Harrison. A little further afield, junior TE Michael Hartvigson is a cousin to former UW baseball pitchers Chad and Grant Hartvigson.
1,000-YARD STREAK: Husky sophomore tailback Bishop Sankey breached the 1,000-yard mark for the 2012 season in the win over Utah. He finished the season with 1,439 yards, third-most in UW history. Sankey was just the 11th different player in UW history to rush for 1,000 yards and his season was the 16th 1,000-yard season in school history. In four years under head coach Steve Sarkisian, the UW has produced a 1,000-yard back each year. Chris Polk reached the benchmark each of the last three seasons and Sankey took over the streak in 2012. THREE BOWLS IN FOUR YEARS AFTER WINLESS SEASON: By reaching a bowl game last year for the third season while just four years removed from a winless season, Washington pulled off a rare feat. The Huskies were just the third team in the last 50 years of major college football to have gone from winless to three bowl games within four seasons. The only other programs to accomplish that feat are Indiana (winless in 1984; bowl games in 1986, 1987 and 1988) and Florida (winless in 1979; bowl games in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983). In 2011, the UW became one of just eight teams ever to go to two bowls within three seasons after a no-win season.
