Rinse and
Return

If you have pesticide containers that you need to dispose of, we can help! We will be collecting triple rinsed containers for proper disposal on Wednesday, September 25th from 10am - 12pm. To triple rinse your container: 1. Remove cover from container. Empty the pesticide into the spray tank and let the container drain for 30 seconds 2. Fill the container 10% to 20% full of water or rinse solution 3. Secure the cover on the container 4. Swirl the container to rinse all inside surfaces 5. Remove cover from the container, add the rinsate from the container to sprayer tank and let drain for 30 seconds or more. Repeat steps 2 through 5 two more times. Then puncture the container.

Gardeners Toolbox Herbs

Master Gardener Beverly Craft will present this ever popular workshop. In addition to learning how to plant, harvest, and store fresh herbs, Beverly will share some of her favorite herbal recipes and remedies. Well enjoy samples of food, beverages, lotions and more created with herbs you can grow in your own backyard. The workshop is on Thursday, September 26th at 6 pm. There is a materials fee of $5.

Fall Soil Samples

Fall soil sampling allows you ample time to implement research-based fertility recommendations before spring planting. When you receive the soil test results, read the pH and lime recommendations. You may need to apply lime to neutralize soil acidity. To be fully effective, agricultural lime should be applied in the fall because it takes about six months to break down and react with the soil. So, the earlier you spread lime, the better. All recommended fertilizers, except nitrogen, can be applied this fall. For the most accurate report, take the best soil samples possible. Youll need to take different samples for various land uses such as agricultural fields, lawn, garden, fruit trees, ornamental shrubs and azaleas because these may have distinct fertility and acidity or alkalinity requirements. For tips on how to take good soil samples and for more info, call (606) 864-4167.

The next Master Cattlemen session will be on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 starting at 5:00 pm in Lexington at the UK Meats Lab which is in the basement of the W.P. Garrigus Building. Childrens Garden Tryathlon

The Childrens Garden Athletes came prepared to compete at the Laurel County Cooperative Extension Office. Our first ever Tryathlon was held in August, with competitors securing their medals with pride and a spoonful of veggies. The Tryathlon was organized much like its similarly spelled cousin, the triathlon. But instead of tests of endurance and feats of strength, the Tryathlon was a catalyst to try new foods. The children were asked to taste samples of six different dishes, each made from the vegetables grown in the garden they tended. Not only did the participants learn how several foods are grown, they also ate what they grew! Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded based on the number of foods each child tasted. Dishes included squash casserole, corn cakes with homemade butter, blueberry topped angel food cake, salsa, watermelon and tomato salad, and cucumber salad. Each athlete did exceptionally well and a few even went back for seconds and thirds! We would like to thank all who participated and volunteered to make this event successful. A special thanks goes to our medal winners. Keep eating vegetables! If you would like any of the recipes used for the Tryathlon, contact the Laurel County Cooperative Extension Service at (606) 864-4167.
